Column: A win summoned by will

Self-confidence was just as responsible for Penn State's historic upset victory on Wednesday night as the Nittany Lions' sharp shooting.

  • I know it's only one win, but Partick Chambers is impressive in motivating these guys. His is passing the recruiting test. We have a great bunch coming in by our standards. We finally seem to have bright future in b-ball. pray

  • Really excited for next year. I will be curious to see how much time any of the incoming freshman guards get considering the depth there for next year.

Indeed, along with additional talent from the freshmen.

I think one of the players I'm most excited to see is Peyton Banks. He's not a center or anything, but he's a potential big scorer.

i'm excited to see what Pitt transfer John Johnson brings to the table once the first semester ends and he can join the team in January. We should have plenty of scoring options next year since Marshall and Newbill learned how to do it on their own this year without Tim. I'm hoping Johnson can be a fourth scoring threat or come off the bench and give us some much needed bench scoring and depth. Johnson plus some of the recruits and we could have a good set of scorers for next year. Really hope Moore can be ready to go right away to give us another post presence and defender. Surprisingly, Ross Travis has stepped up nicely with rebounding and defending.

It's funny that the first person mentioned Thorpe, Bills mentioned Banks, but I'm really excited for Woodward. He's a sharp-shooting, cagey point guard. I said in another threat the his game reminds me of Joe Crispin a bit.

Que the next person to single out Moore as a promising big man, and we'll have hit all 4 freshmen!

And 12 did it! I always forget about Johnson, too. He's a wild card in all of this.

I'm hoping Banks can turn into a Jeff Brooks and be the athletic swingman that can step outside or drive it to the bucket and deliver some thunderous dunks. Hopefully Chambers can get him to the point Brooks was at his senior year before Banks' senior year.

  • I see the impact/playing time of the incoming guys as follows.....
    1. Johnson - he can practice with the team all year, can't play until the second semester starts though. Already has Big East experience and lots of playing time with Pitt.
    2. Woodward - small guard but has the quicks and a good handle. IMO becomes the instant back-up to Frazier because Newbill simply isn't/shouldn't be a primary ball handler
    3. Banks - Athletic swing man that can spell Marshall, Travis, or Taylor
    4. Thorpe - Would love to be wrong and hope he becomes a big time scorer, but we've got alot of guys at his spot....Newbill, Johnson, Marshall, etc.
    5. Moore- I simply think he needs some time to bulk up and get his body ready for B1G basketball.
