    What we're hearing...
Oregon - If Chip Kelly leaves for the NFL the two leading candidates to replace him will likely be OC Mark Helfrich and Boise State coach Chris Petersen. Don't look for Kelly to bring more than a couple of Oregon coaches with him.
Tennessee - We continue to hear that Jon Gruden and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy will be serious candidates. We're also hearing some chatter about Louisville's Charlie Strong.
Auburn - The three names making the rounds are Alabama DC Kirby Smart, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn. There will be others.
NC State - We're told that Vanderbilt coach James Franklin will be a candidate.
Arkansas - We're told the Razorbacks are zeroing in on a hire. TCU coach Gary Patterson is the flavor of the week, but we're told Mike Gundy remains in the mix, along with two or three other candidates.
Kentucky - Multiple sources tell us that AD Mitch Barnhart would like to make a splash hire with someone like Mike Gundy. It's more likely the Wildcats will end up with someone like David Cutcliffe or San Jose State's Mike MacIntyre. Tommy Tuberville seemed to be in the mix prior to his "slap" of a GA Saturday.

  • The only name that seems completely retarded to me is Mike Gundy.

He's an OSU alum, and has taken that program to a place it has never been consistently. He does play second fiddle to OU, but they're probably the third best program in the Big 12 consistently now. That's pretty impressive compared to what they were before he got there.

Supposedly the AD and him barely speak, and that he's looking to get out, but I seriously doubt that. T. Boone makes all the decisions in Stillwater, and if he hears Gundy wants to leave he'll do what it takes to keep him.

Don't think Patterson leaves either, but more of a gut feeling than anything sensible.

  • Why in the world would Jimbo leave FSU for Auburn? Something going on in Tallahassee I'm unaware of?

I don't think Kirby Smart leaves Bama for Auburn.

IMO, Patterson doesn't leave TCU for Arkansas. Tennessee might be a different story though if he gets a call.

Why a named coach would look at Kentucky is beyond me. UKY should look at Taggart from WKU, or the OC from Clemson - Morris.

  • Mike Gundy's "I'm a man! I'm 45 years old!" speech will go down as one of the greatest press conference meltdowns of all time. I would post it here if I wasn't at work and blocked from YouTube.

  • Jon Gruden is not going to be coaching at Tennessee, the Eagles job is probably going to be opening up and Gruden wants a very easy exit from any college job.

I hope you are right about Gruden and the Eagles. I don't think he will neglect certain positions like Andy has done.

  • Possibly a large number of jobs open this offseason. Lots of moving around. I'm always interested to see where guys end up.

    No doubt.

I question Chip Kelly in the NFL though. I sure as hell hope he's not planning on implementing his up-tempo system in the league. It may be successful initially until teams get used to the speed and tempo his offense has but it's the NFL, teams will pick up on it.

He won't be coaching anywhere but the NFL, period. He may use Tenn as leverage (kind of like he used us last year), but if he is going to coach again its going to be in The League. And his first order of business if he gets the Eagles job is to dump Vick and get a top QB in there. He really likes Foles though, so we'll see.

  • I graduated from WKU and live in Lexington, KY. I will tell you that IMO UK will not go after Taggart because they don't want their perceived "little brother" to look like we might have something they want. They are obnoxiously prideful in that sense. A name around here is Jim Tressel. Hell UK is already so bad they are basically on a self imposed bowl ban anyway.

Fisher will be a main candidate for the Tennessee job. His former AD, Hart, is here in TN. Hart was the guy who named Fisher coach in waiting at FSU. None of the leadership is left at FSU that Fisher had been promoted under. Further, they promised Fisher new facilities and none of that has materialized.

  • Read an article that says Chizik has a $7.7m buyout. If his entire staff leaves, then the buyout will be over $10m.

Nice chunk of change that Auburn has cost themselves. Chizik is some sort of sick business genius to not only get the job at Auburn after going 5-19 at ISU, then swindling them out of all these millions.

Doesn't Tressel have a five year show cause thing with the NCAA. Don't see a fit there. I used to live in Lexington for five years. That is a BAD job. No big name should even consider that gig.

  • I know there is something to that affect. I'm not sure about the specifics. They are never going to give the football program the attention it needs to be successful. They could go to the Sugar Bowl and if UK had a home game against Mississippi Valley State in basketball, there would be more people at Rupp. I'm not sure why a football coach would want that.

  • Whew... was half expecting to see BOB's name in teh mix. I want the man to stay. I will not like every year for the next 4 hanging on to see what current players bolt, and what coaches we lose. I certainly think BOB will get NFL feelers in the coming years. I hnestly believe BOB could get us multiple B10 titles and births into this new 4 team format once we out of the Emmert crap...

This is the last year we have to worry about players bolting w no eligibility consequence. Next year and beyond it won't be any more common than it was before sanctions.

Some Browns fans have been called in a couple of times to sports talk shows in Cleveland and have mention BOB as a candidate for the Browns job once it opens up. I don't give it any credence but it shows that BOB has made his mark this season.

Actually, I can see Gundy fitting in at UT-Knoxville. The way he talks is perfect. UT has a nice core of offensive weapons to build with - granted, they are mostly juniors and could leave after this year. If Gundy came in, Bray, Hunter, Patterson and some of those OLmen might stay. Gundy better find a better DC than he has at Okie Light if he heads to Kville.
