Thanks for stopping by...It will be a totally different situation for you guys because he will be an assistant not the head S&C guy. What type of program does your head guy implement? Olympic? Powerlifting? HIT?

Thomas is an HIT guy and very set in his ways but if he is an assistant he will have to do what your head S&C guy wants. As far as most fans take on Thomas is that his HIT program really put our linemen especially lacking power and explosiveness and he did not adapt to free weights or Olympic movements. HIT may be good as supplement training once in awhile but as for using it as the program it really hurt us especially in the trenches.

We are excited to have Craig Fitzgerald because he provides fresh training and brings an Olympic style to our program.

I think you will have to wait and see how Thomas adapts but the good thing is - he is not your head guy and the one running the show.

  • I think as long as he is assistant, he will be ok for you guys. The majority here did not care for the HIT style lifting. But the fact that he was here so long, you know you are getting a guy with experience. If I had to guess you guys are looking to add some HIT training to your olympic style training. He specializes in that type of workout so you guys should be ok as long as you don't adopt his overall workout program.

SOME of us feel his style of lifting was a big part of the reason we have gotten pushed around the field since the late 90's. But know one can put down the dedication and love he had for this university. He is a true professional.

  • Give him a chance... Thomas delivered what Paterno asked for. Most likely if UGA wanted something else, he could build a plan for that.

He believes in HIT, yes paterno wanted HIT, but he does HIT because he believes in it - not because that's just what Paterno wanted.

  • As much as we all moaned and groaned about him and, more particularly about HIT, he is very well regarded in his profession from what I've always understood. I would consider him a very strong hire as an asst. S&C coach. He won't be dictating philosophy in that role, so I would think you'll like what you hear about him down there.

  • If Georgia uses HIT appropriately and mixes it in with their olympic weight training, you guys should be fine. JT knows what he is doing in regards to HIT... but it just shouldn't be used as a the main lifting philosophy in football S&C programs.

As for his teaching style, he is very demanding and is not what you would call a "player's coach". I'm not saying that is good or bad, that's just how operates. Also, he has been against any kind of suppliments... even simple protien. Now we are not sure if that was at Paterno's request but...

I will tell you this... our one LB, Kahri Fortt, tweeted that he went from 230 to 243 in 5 weeks under our new S&C coach. shrug

  • I dont know... dont want to "dawg" JT, but from the few reports we are getting from people willing to open up and talk about how the S&C was run before, it seemed like a pretty negative atmosphere. Not only did almost everyone question the exclusive use of HIT, but heard it was not exactly an inspiring, or motivating place the past few years... who knows the root cause of that tho? I sure dont know JT personally, was he unhappy in general, unhappy being asked to do something he didnt fully believe in,. or was that just his personality? Who really knows...

  • Thx fellows im not sure I even know what HIT means. As far as our current sc program its more of the olympic style and our strength coach is hard nosed as they come might be bad with them together but I appreciate your input.

  • One overlooked facet of JT's regime was the conditioning portion of S&C. We were typically one of the better conditioned teams in the B1G. It was partially due to the fact that we fielded smaller, leaner athletes; but superior conditioning is an integral part of the HIT philosophy. If you already possess a quality strength coach, JT will provide very good balance as a conditioning expert.

  • JT works very hard and will do well at Georgia. PSU did use free weights and I am sure Georgia will do the same. Most programs incorporate different styles within the weight room and training and JT will bring a lot of input on the high intensity workouts. JT is also very hands on, meaning he likes to put through guys in their workouts. So, JT is not going to sit in an office and watch. He will be very hands on.

  • Our weakness has been conditioning so I guess his main role will be in that area we are also hiring a speed coach out of florida so im hoping the combination of our current power training plus jts conditioning training and new speed coach will make for a great s c program

  • tenndawg, in that event, I think Thomas would be an excellent hire. One thing most people would agree with is that the team was usually in peak physical condition. The only issue most of the fanbase had with him was the strength training philosophy, as others have mentioned.
