Coach Obrien and recruiting

Spulv when are you going to come out and just admit you are really an OSU fan and gloat to yourself about fooling us all?

lol That was hilarious. And not in the way he thought it was. swirl

So if the post is that stupid, you are saying a dominant front 4 is well and above Brady, perhaps the best QB to ever play, and any scheme the O coordinator can draw up? End of story?

Yes. 7 guys defending 4 or 5, none of whom are deep ball threats, with only a few seconds to throw the ball? Advantage defense.

Brady has become a more accurate and less mobile Elway. Great but not great enough to win it all without help.

Dude, if you have watched NE play this year, you would realize that offense is somewhat similar to PSU's recruiting efforts of years gone by. It's playing with a short deck. The offense, which was brought together by the GM and owner, not the OC, has no running game to speak of (BenJarvis Green Ellis wouldn't be the featured back even for a Top 10 college team); doesn't have a legit downfield play maker at WR (sorry neon Deion Branch nor Chad Occhocinco don't qualify). It's a three or four man offense with Brady, two tight ends and Welker. For what they have offensively, its pretty amazing what they come up with to generate offense, even with a HOF QB. give it a rest.

Not to mention their best TE was going on 1 wheel last night..

  • So with all that said, how did they make it to the Superbowl and win 10 straight games? It wasnt the D dude. It was the fact they passed for the 3rd most yards in NFL history with "a short deck."

  • Spulv my man I think I maybe a fan...not because you have very insightful posts ( although you deserve a little more credit ) but because everytime I come into these threads I can alm,ost hear the Booing and see the rotten tomatoes flying and it makes me laugh. Pretty impressive to rile everyone up the way you do especially because I believe its not necessarily your intention.

Anyhow to answer your question. Pete and others are right about the front four disrupting it was Bradlley/Johnson/Paterno's recipe for success or failure depending on what Saturday we are discussing. As far as any sheen you are talking about. These last two games don't mean anything when it comes to Penn St. If you loved O'Brien you still love him. If you hate him you still hate him. If you are excited you are still excited. Apprehensive well you get my point. Recruits don't know the Guy anything short of 50 points in the super bowl wasn't really going to help with that. He coached Tom Brady and a high powered offense either recruits are going to be impressed or they're not. Nothing has changed.

Listen troll, you are contradicting yourself now.. You started a thread about coach OB and recruiting, and asked if the last 2 games will impact his status as an offensive mind.. You kno exactly what you are doing.. Stop being dumb..

If you're going to troll - do it right. Go back and read some of my "gems"....I've been doing this longer and have been far more successful at it.

  • Thus the saying that "defense wins championships". And also "it starts up front."

outdated saying......Green Bay, NO, NE several times....even Tampa scoring 48. Most have been based on offense and less on D.

it really is not my intention. I could say that Bob is great and point out every great quality of every recruit, and I would still earn 20 downvotes :)

So Brady has not in essense, been shut down the past 2 weeks?

Yes, the Ravens are a good defense, but they were not thier best this year. The Giants were around the same, but great in the playoffs.

But the key to them winning championships have come with their defensive efforts.

Im a Colts fan, I know about all offensive teams. You know when Peyton finally got a ring? When the defense showed up in the playoffs. Go look at what Indy did on defense in the 06/07 playoffs, especially compared to their regular season.

Why did the Giants win yesterday? Defensive effort. Why did the Pats make the SB ? The D stepped up in Baltimore.

Packers last year had the DPOY. It fell apart this year and guess where they went? No where.

New Orleans lost its game because of a giant D miscue. But the year they won the SB they had a D that forced gobs of turnovers.

  • Also NE hasnt won a Super Bowl since they lost that dominant defense years ago. And cheating too.

Offense wins games, defense wins championships.

Same with college football. What up Alabama and LSU? Oregon is loved by you Duck King, but they don't get the crown. Why? Can't play D.

Wha??? Tampa had 5 INTs, 3 returned for TDs and the other 2 led to points. Their defense put up like 31 points in that game...lol. Bill Callahan didn't even bother to change Grudens terminology. TBs defense knew every play being called at the LOS. As others mentioned, GBs defense was excellent LY. In fact, their main Achilles heel this yr was caused by the departure of their best DL and injuries to the OL.

This guy doesn't know jack about football. You don't have to be a student of the game to understand it, but he's like the girl who picks winners on the teams uniform colors or which QB has a nicer butt.

With this line of reasoning, PSU should have won multiple championships in the last 10-15 years. Excellent D most years.....

Everyone on the board, as recently as January was saying.....I am sick of the "Defense wins chamionships" mentality, and "nwadays in college football, you have to have a great offense to win." Isnt that why we are so excited for Obrien? I know, everyone wants to refute every word i say.....

While some of these teams did have some decent D's.......you have to have some decent offense as well. I would say the Packers and Saints won more for Rodgers and Brees than they did thier D.

PS- like the cheating too comment. Well done

One, most football fans are dumb. Period. They want to see points. That's why people like Oregon. Lots of sizzle.

Two, there's a difference between an average offense, and a unit so dreadful its damn near impossible to win with. We won nine games with this offense, thanks D. As Adam Rittenberg said this year "Penn State: national championship defense, division 3 offense."

Three, I ain't what you would call "excited" about OBrien.

Four, the point wasn't that offense or defense is better. Those teams did have good offenses (well tampa had brad johnson). Its important. But the point is you cannot win the 'ship without defense. Its still a QB league, hell a QB game. But have to have the D.

  • I was just waiting for someone to jump on the Tampa statement.

Obviously the idea defenses wins championships comes from the consistency aspect of both sides of the ball. Really works in every sport defense/pitching is going to be more consistent than offenses.

In football it may be a little outdated with the way the game is played today and how good/consistent quarterbacks have become. That said if I was asked which side of the ball I would want to be dominant on to win a championship I would still rather have a dominant defense.
