Here's what I think her point is, because Penn State is located in a rural area, it becomes the focus of the entire region around it. Becomes the "franchise" for all to root for. Avid fans, not just alums, live and die each Saturday in the fall with the wins and losses JoPa accumulated. I'm a Buckeye fan, and the situation is not so different in Columbus. Bigger city, but really no other sports franchise to focus on. In Ohio, when you venture towards Cleveland, you find pockets of avid Buckeye fans, but more Browns and Indians too. Same in Cincy. In PA, go west you have Steelers, go east and Philly sports team take some of the attention away from Penn State. The perversions Sandusky committed are everywhere, sadly, but the culture of PSU to cover it up at all costs is more likely to occur in places like State College, Columbus, or any other community where the University's athletic program is the primary entertainment for the area.

Shouldn't you be busy writing the B1G requesting that we be removed? Make sure to call us "Pedo St." like you did in your previous posts.

I hate when fans go to other schools sites and act like a "voice of reason" when really they are there just to troll.

  • No need to get pissed off. She's an idiot to think abuse doesn't happen in cities.

She insinuated we were insular football cult due to the unique rural setting. She's the big city sophisticate (she went to Northwestern, dont ya know). Do you think bigots are the only ones to harbor sterotypes?

Almost every columnist or commentator that has called for severe sanctions has made the argument that Penn State fans are some sort of fanatics -- of course without explaining how we are different from any other fan base -- and that NCAA action is needed to teach those people a lesson. It really is condescending elitism.

Has anyone read Rittenberg's column this morning? Sorry I cant link it from my phone. I know he's ESPN and catches flack for being a bit nerdy, but it was an absolutely fabulous piece. Very level headed, fair, and placed emphasis in the right places.

Read this your suggestion. It was decent...After this public mauling, I wonder if at some point some balance might come back and people might begin to regain some level of rationality.

Thanks for posting. Good stuff. But I hope whoever Taylor Patton is, he gets his ass kicked by his friends for the stupid "all hell's breaking loose" comment if the statue is taken down.

Or jealous come-uppance directed toward the only non-Service/Stanford/jNW program to have a legitimate reason to be proud of their STUDENT-athletes?

  • Heard her on Finebaum yesterday and she is a total nut job claims to be a big college football fan and said if this happened at North Western, NW would volunteer to suspend the football program. She acts like she speaks for the University. Stated she watched the Bama PSU battles in the 70's and was enamored by the uniforms. WTF? She would state she thinks it's terrible for the fans, the students, the student athlete that they should suspend football, then laughs, does this numerous times.
This crack is doing this to get hits and she is going to keep doing this to antagonize the PSU base. I turned it off after about 5 minutes and I would suggest you do the same and not do be the anti Howard Stern listener and listen or read to see what she is going to say next, because it is only going to be negative.

  • Strangely most people in the media have been pretty fair so far. But just like any group of people you have your crazy people. I never heard of Christine Brennen and dont kno what she does or who she covers, but based on her comments I kno for a fact she is an idiot. And by idiot I mean not smart, stupid, unintelligent. PSU should get the death penalty and the community deserves to suffer? Really? So in an economy where 8.2 percent of Americans are out of work you want more people to be out of work? These sportswriters live in a bubble and have an over inflated sense of self importance. Their jobs are meaningless. They watch sports for a living. Christine Brennen does not care about America's working class.

Geddy - Yea..I remember the psychotic laughter at a completely inappropriate time now that you mention it...I also remember thinking - if that's what represents the folks coming after us - we're likely to survive..Mob mentality personified...Oh well, this is my last post wasted on her..

  • I hope to see this lady in the DMV someday soon (although I think USA Today is out by Dulles)...I would give her the loudest "We Are..." chant ever heard.

Yea. I heard her on Finebaum's station today and heard all of the persistent sterotypes that liberals cling to. A real pseudo intellectual. I live in Chicago, and I can assure you that blue states are not bastions of brain power..

This has nothing to do with "liberal" or "conservative". I've seen you make reference to politics in several different posts and it's getting tiring. Political opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

Do us a favor and keep politics out of it, there are plenty of other internet message boards for your to express your political opinions. It would be much appreciated, we have enough on here to discuss without resorting to the "liberal" v. "conservative" B.S. Thank you.
