I'll tell you what. I was a little worried about Roof coming into the season, and mostly from reading other people's apprehensions about him (here). I didn't know much about him, myself.

Things started off a little shaky, but not terribly. Then, they seemed to be tightening up, but we were in a stretch of playing a few mediocre offenses. So, at that point I was becoming optimistic. Cautiously optimistic, but letting myself be optimistic.

At this point, I'm pretty sure we have AT LEAST a "good" defensive coordinator. Maybe better than "good." But the defense, and the defensive play-calling -- I've been quite happy with what I've seen so far.

Basically, I don't think I could be much happier with our staff all the way around. I can't think of a coach to complain about.

  • Things are just back to normal after losing the QB they hired for a year. Chance they dip back into Ames, IA for their next coach as well?

  • I was wary of Roof based off of his Auburn stint and was hoping for a job similar to his Minnesota stint. He has exceeded my expectations. I know everybody was complaining about no nickel but this defense is better off without using a nickel. The roadrunner package puts the best back 7 players on the field.

Agree. My family who went to Auburn are typical Auburn fans and that is they live under the shadow of Bama and if Bama is winning and Auburn has a bad season or two they have no patience. I figured Roof wasn't that bad but was a overreaction from Auburn. I think we are right.

  • Trey Johnson ought to see the chance to play right away here. He is close to Roof and we still have a lot to offer him. Hopefully things work out.

  • I'm still holding out judgement on Roof. I've been pretty happy so far, but I'm interested to see how the defense plays against Martinez this weekend.

I have watched almost every NU game and he has improved, not as much as Moxie, but still his passing mixed with his running is dangerous. I am curious how Moxie does because their D is just average. I think they blitz him and if he isn't throwing off his back foot he should be able to hit our TE's.

  • Will that be the record for fewest games between winning a title and being fired?

  • I think everyone was worried about Roof. Those who weren't might be stretching the turth a little bit.

Roof has had some struggles in the past at different locations and probably best known for Duke, where if anyone knows football coaches go to die.

Here is a serious question about the sanctions....I know our players can leave until next August with no repercussions....can people also transfer here in that time with no sitting out?

I know that sounds goofy and a probable obvious no but I thought I would ask. Back when the sanctions were announced it would be silly for anyone to think that, but now after watching the boys play there might be some people who would want a fresh start here.

Anyone here where Jones is going to end up?

He recently tweeted that he was looking forward to spring ball, and when asked where he was going, he said he wouldn't say on twitter.

  • Pitt is my guess. They suck fiercely and have an open QB spot.

It's the most logical destination for him.

  • I'm still up in the air with Roof. We'll see how he does next year when he doesn't inherit a fantastic front seven. I was a bit disappointed in the Ohio State game. We were really confusing Braxton Miller in the first half by blitzing. You could see it in his eyes. He couldn't run the read option because guys were coming from every angle. Then for some reason we stopped being aggressive in the second half and Miller just ate away at us. I'm still scratching my head at why they decided to call off the dogs like that.

I think we are still scratching our heads on both game plans versus OSU - offensively and defensively.

I wonder if the defense tired out and that kept Roof from continuing the aggression. Teams that are heavy blitz teams typically rotate a lot to keep guys fresh. We don't have that luxury. We are just not deep enough at DT or LB (DE maybe)

A good example was Florida State under Mickey Andrews, he use to rotate 8 to 10 DL and 6 LBs to keep the dogs fresh.

That said, I like Roof...I think without the sanctions, he would have built that depth. I don't think he is an elite DC, but a very good one.
