This is the play before the Belton fumble, and that's Allen Robinson as wide open as you can possibly be at the top left corner of the screen. TOS does a nice little feature on premium where they take they play frame by frame as it develops - Robinson is wide open from just after the snap and is calling for the ball almost instantly. McGloin never sees him - never even LOOKS HIS WAY, doesn't see Kersey who was also a step behind the defender streaking towards the EZ, and throws to Kenny who was cutting underneath for an 11 yard gain. That's as sure a td as you'll ever see. Please don't tell me that MM wasn't a significant reason that game was lost. Did he play "well enough to win"? Obviously not - they scored 14 points and that wasn't enough. With Tyler Templeton at qb PSU wins by 30. AARRRRGGGGHHHH

I mean, on this one play ARob is wide open, and Kersey is in single coverage and has a step on the CB... Kenney has 2 defenders on him, and there is a LB or DE hovering underneath... MM has to improve, period...

Take a good look at the play and not the actual picture. It looks to me as if the play was designed to go to the right all day long. In fact if that is the case, it makes Robinson MM's 4th read on that play. Take a look at where the DE is at....not going to happen guys. A picture is worth 1000 words, but about 2 cents in this case. Notice Belton on the left is barely interested in the play as if he knows it's going the other way. You have Kenney underneath Kersey and Gilliam in the middle. You would hope had he saw that it would have occurred, but this picture is going viral for PSU fans without much thought IMO. The only clear problem would be if their was no hat over Robinson pre snap and that includes off the LOS. I'm not sure that was the case in this instance.

Wasn't at the game and TV didn't cover this, but the guys on the other boards are saying there were two receivers on the left an one DB. If that is the case, McGloin needs to recognize that.
I don't care if that DE is a few steps away, AROB has been open a very long time in that picture. He's freaking doing jumping jacks.
Lets take that completely out. Kersey is still more open than Kenney is.
I am not blaming McGloin for the loss, but he has to recognize what the D is giving him.

Kersey is only getting a step at that point in time as the ball is already released. Kenney is open as well as he has two guys behind him on a crossing route. The play also went for a first down IIRC as Kersey's route by design cleared the room for Kenney. The blown coverage you would hope is caught, but how many times a year at live games do you see one guy wide open and the QB had no clue. I'm talking at the highest of levels. Those talking about A Rob don't seem to grasp the fact that on this play he was possibly the 4th choice.
I saw some comments on this picture other places and it was clear to me that some had no clue what the design on this play was. Yes if there was not hat at all over A Rob the QB needs to catch that, but there is still more to it. How many seconds were on the clock when the broke the huddle? How much time did he have to really disect them pre-snap? Did he have time and simply just blew it...possibly, but I have my doubts there. I'm a bit more optimistic that PSU had 3 guys open on a passing play....3 guys. Kenney had two men trailing him on a route designed that way....he was open. A Rob was open and the Defense didn't even account for him...good sign. Kersey had just broken free....good sign. Hopefully B'OB and MM continue to break things down to catch all of this. He is now breaking down tapes with someone a little more detail oriented than the past HC, OC, and QB coach. I'm sure this will be pointed out to him.

Sorry, but this isn't "one picture taken out of context". When you look at the series of pictures, PRE-SNAP the DB to the left is flat-footed and not paying attention. The play was almost certainly designed to go to the right, but from the moment the ball was snapped, Robinson was wide open, with no defensive player within 5 yards of him, and the boundary wide open. Kenney and Robinson were stacked at the LOS to the left. If McGloin even looks to his left pre-snap and studies the D alignment he should have been able to pick up the fact that there may have been an opening there. The DB bites inside IMMEDIATELY at the snap. It takes Kenney a good while to cut across and get open to the right. Sorry, but even if Robinson was the 4th read (which I don't believe he was, think he was 3rd) there's no reason why McGloin shouldn't have checked down as he was pulling back from the line, as Kenney is coming across and Kersey is coming off the LOS. Can I do it? No way. Should the starting qb for PSU be able to do it? Yep.

JMO, but these guys are so focused on just being able to execute the playbook as designed that even Intermediary level audibles shouldn't be expected. I'm not justifying mistakes, but I expect plenty of them considering the circumstances.
The QBs have had 6 months to advance from a playbook that was half derived from the Old Testament, half from XBox...to a playbook as thick as the Bible and designed to be executed at rapid pace.
Would BOB have cared if MM audibled and threw a TD? Of course not. But I doubt he's prepped his guys to that level yet. He's essentially starting from scratch, and my guess is that all the QBs primary concerns at the moment are executing the plays as called. JMO.

As far as Robinson being his 3rd choice, you are saying the progessions go from right to left and then back to the middle for the TE? Kenney and Kersey are no doubt his first two options. Then you have a TE over the middle, so you are saying he skips that option and comes back to him as a fourth....I don't think so. I can't say for sure that is the case, but it makes very little sense and is wasted motion and time. He may have missed A Rob which is his fault, but people are missing the big picture here. Ohio blew a coverage and while it should have been picked up on, the PSU passing game is giving our QB multiple options. This will not be the last time a downfield WR isnt' thrown to for an underneath WR. The scheme is giving him options and while he wasn't perfect in his first full start, this will pay off in time hopefully. This isn't like the last 30 years where PSU had 2 possible options, no chance to audible, and teams had a good clue as to where PSU was going.
There was plenty of room for improvement, but I'm not buying the fact that his play alone was the downfall in this game. Every person up there played a part, but this picture of a third down play that was converted isn't some great evidence of MM's awful play.
- PSU passed the ball close to 70% of the time. The HC admitted today that was his bad and the balance needs to be better. - The defense was routinely in 3rd and short all second half. Ohio converted 9 of 10 on the PSU D in the second half and that was probably the biggest disappointment to me in this game. - A fumble on a really good scoring drive by Belton took points off the board. - Hodges fumble put points on the board. - Drops, missed passes by MM, and an awful punting game also played a part.
This one photo may be some type of end all proof to you that the QB lost this game or played a huge part in it, but there was more to it. I'm actually a little bit encouraged that the passing game is opening up for the QB to make decisions and in this case he had multiple WR's clear to catch a pass. Hopefully they review the tape with him and get the WR's to signal at the LOS if they see this again. There is a big learning curve out there for everyone on that O, but this one play shows you something that I'm not seeing. I've seen NFL QB's miss this and have it pointed out just about every single year. Our QB is going from a JV High school like offense to a sophisticated passing attack offense. One in where the balance and lack of running game had him throwing the ball 50 times. PSU isn't winning very many games if any QB up there is tossing the ball 50 times and our D can't get off the field in the second half to save their lives.

tdiddy,
so what happens from here? what happens this year? does this become a throwaway year where we have guys just learning the playbook? For the next 5 weeks, if we perform in similar fashion to what we did against OU, where we have flashs of brilliance but overall too many guys are just thinking and not playing, we'll have ONE win.
Navy. That's it. Losses to OU, VA, Temple, Illinois, and NW.
So, is our season really dependent on how fast these guys can get comfortable with the playbook? If that is the case, we're looking at a 2-4 win season, and talk of "kids are learning the playbook" isn't going to win over recruits. Don't you think?
Is this weekend's game already a loss?
