Chances the NCAA Sanctions are Reduced...

  • BaltLions24 said...

One thing that hasn't been discussed much is the implication of a new university president. Erickson is done in June 2014..

Well the current board hired the search firm, so there's that.

  • I consider myself optimistic and I still only think there is a 20% chance that sanctions get reduced and I think there is less than 10% chance that it will happen within the next year (if it does).

  • There are a couple of other wildcards:
    - impact of Surma's departure
    - Kane's involvement. She is the lead for NCAA v PSU
    - if/when Corbett uses his influence on the board to bring PSU into the fight. Corbett + Lubrano faction + Corbett appointees has to be able to review Freeh report if he chooses to.

    PennStateFan33

  • I think it's too early to say at this point. But 0% seems a bit low IMHO.

  • Honestly, I think the lawsuits hurt the chances. Will just put the NCAA up against a wall. They won't want to look weak.

They could have looked merciful--PSU cleans up its act, Mitchell reports are glowing, etc etc--except that now any backtracking may look like they are giving in to political pressure.

You guys got what you wanted, but I think it will hurt more than anything.

Jesus that's not soon enough. I was under the impression both he and Joyner were gone by years end.

I'd still rather they stand up for the school and against a glaring act of improper use of power than sit on their hands and kiss the NCAA's ass hoping they will be so kind to take a year or two off what amounts to a almost a 10 year sentence. For me, this is amount so much more than football....

Because we have seen the NCAA reduce sanctions before. Correct me if I'm wrong. I just remember it happening.

Except what people really want are the sanctions eliminated or reduced, so no, they haven't gotten that.

I'm curious as to what makes you think the NCAA would have wanted to look merciful to Penn State without the lawsuits (not to mention the fact that Penn State is not involved in the suits).

I've always believed that the sanctions would be reduced if we cooperated. The NCAA acted because they had no choice. There was too much public outrage to not act harshly. However, they gave us the out by saying the sanctions could be amended. That was part of the reason we have our Athletics Integrity Monitor, or whatever Mitchell is called.

In time I felt they would reduce them. Public outrage would fade (which is obviously happening, and we're seeing evidence of it all over the place). NCAA would come in and say that this is an excellent example of cooperation between the NCAA and a violator. Would be a chance to show other schools that if they cooperate things can go well. There are a lot of reasons the NCAA would reduce the sanctions.

I don't know much about the NCAA, but have they ever reduced sanctions on a team? As long as Emmert is president I don't see him reducing them voluntarily.

Totally irrelevant, even if they have. This is an unprecedented situation in nearly every regard.

I'd just like to see the sanctions end. Once they are over, we can start working on the narrative.

IMO, the sanctions will never be reduced under any circumstances.

The narrative will probably never change for those outside the PSU community. They are morons who will never listen to the facts. That damage has been done.

The lawsuits are the only way the sanctions would have any hope of being reduced/dropped, however that won't work because by the time the suit is won (let's just assume PA wins for argument sake -- I know that is a long LONG shot) the sanctions will be over. Look at the UB case, 10+ years...

IMO, this is about holding people accountable. The NCAA needs to be held accountable for breaking their own rules to punish us and with no concrete proof of wrongdoing. Officially, Curley, Schultz, and Spanier are still innocent. Officially, Paterno was never charged. So, up to this point no crimes were committed (only accusations) and it's debatable if ethics were compromised. Basically we were punished with no proof of wrongdoing. That is an OUTRAGE and someone needs to stand up.

The narrative has already changed. Do you read anything outside of this board? Gene Wojo at ESPN was even calling for reduced or eliminated sanctions, and he was anything but friendly to us.

I disagree. If they've never decreased sanctions on a team before, they certainly aren't going to start with the "pedophile enablers".

That's why I think the lawsuit is our only chance.

    PSU17

  • I fear that there won't be any reductions as long as Emmert is in charge unless a court forces him to. He is taking a beating as of late and reducing the sanctions now or anytime soon will make him look like he was wrong to implement them in the first place. That would be too hard on his Ego

    It's certainly possible.

However, is there precedent for the NCAA showing mercy and reducing sanctions due to good behavior? I don't know that I've heard of any.

If they want to look merciful, they can still easily do so, lawsuits or not. Mitchell's reports are getting some publicity, and we've already seen Gene Woj, who obviously dislikes Penn State, call for the NCAA to reduce the sanctions. I just don't know that I've seen any evidence that they actually want to look merciful.

Based on what I've seen, the NCAA has dug its own grave regarding cooperation from programs. Feels like every time we hear about a university "cooperating fully," they still get hit with sanctions they didn't expect. IMO, the NCAA tends to send a lot of messages of power, but rarely if ever send messages of mercy.

it has nothing to do with being noble.... not fighting the sanctions equates to accepting them as warranted from my seat. Accepting them as warranted equates to accepting the narrative that Penn State's culture was responsible for Sandusky's crimes. If you want to own that just to hope the football team can win more games a little sooner, that's fine. Needless to say, I strongly disagree. I'm a proud 3rd generation alum that owes a lot to Penn State dating back to the 30's when the school gave my grandfather an opportunity to afford to be the first to got to college since arriving in the US. Letting the university and the culture be attacked without any challenge just to win some football games seems completely crazy to me.

good luck fighting the narrative if you accept the Freeh report and the Consent decree....

  • Frankly, I'm tired of the notion that this is unprecedented. As a general ethics case, this has quite a bit of precedent. Just because nobody's seen THIS EXACT SPECIFIC case before does not mean it's unprecedented.

If that's the definition, then every single case the NCAA comes across is unprecedented.

NCAA essentially called the Boise State case unprecedented too:

"NCAA officials denied that the Boise State case has direct comparison to any past cases."

NCAA upholds ruling on Boise State Broncos scholarship sanctions - ESPN

The NCAA has rejected an appeal from Boise State and is standing by its decision that the football program must reduce the number of scholarships it hands out this season and the next.

LOL!!!! Yes Wojo called for taking another look at the sanctions... but in the article he still stuck to the Paterno, Curely, Schultz, and Spanier cover up narrative. He wasn't saying because their was no cover up we need to relook... he didn't even say the NCAA over stepped their authority... He said with the progress PSU is making (this is offensive)... so Wojo did not exhibit the changing of the narrative.

Personally, I could care less about the narrative. I want the sanctions dropped, NCAA held accountable (reparations to PSU), the BOT held accountable (everyone gone), Corbett not reelected, Linda Kelly (or staff) in jail for leaking GJ testimony illegally, Freeh to be discredited (and never allowed to do this again he's done it enough -- enough already!), Erickson to be fired (unfortunately he has a great pension and doesn't care), Raykowitz and Second MIle be investigated, PA DPW to be held accountable, Whoever "lost" Patricia Chambers report and decided Seasock was the way to go to be held accountable, Centre County CYS to be held accountable... and I'm sure there are others.

The real tragedy here is the DPW and CYS aren't getting any heat. They need some serious overhaul and be trained better in the "nice-guy" offender.
