Chambers grabs huge commit

  • I agree. Look at what Chambers has done with this team. They are completely undermanned talent-wise, but they hustle every minute out on the floor, play strong defense and make these games competitive. The 20-point loss to Michigan State this week would have been by 40 or more if DeChellis were still here. Imagine what Coach Chambers can do with more talent on his roster added to the collection of strong role players already here. Next year is going to be awesome and 2013 is just going to be amazing to watch.

So does this mean we're out of the running for Sheldon Jeter? The kid seemed really interested and I know we have a limited number of scholarships.

P.S.--I love that Chambers has gotten better recruits in less than 12 months than Ed DeChellis did in his entire tenure at Penn State. This is what happens when the coach actually gives a damn about recruiting. I hope the football program gets the same upward trajectory.

It's more than giving a damn. It's about personality and persistence. Chambers is showing he's got the package to go along with squeezing the most out of the talent he has. Give him three years of recruiting and watch out. He's gonna be tough to keep in Happy Valley.

Andrew, do you think we get Jeter?

No word yet, it looks promising though. If he gets a Pitt offer, it will definitely complicate things, but it hasn't happened yet. Jeter is set to decide at the end of his HS season.

  • Is there any chance of Billy Oliver not coming back next year? I heard he is on pace to graduate and with all his injuries to his head im wondering if he will even be back?

Like PSUBills said, there's still a scholarship open.

Basically, Peter Alexis (currently on the team) won't be on scholarship next season. There is still one scholarship open right now (Alexis' vacated one), whether it is used in 2012 for Jeter (most likely) or 2013 for another player remains to be seen.

    That's sort of accurate.

    The problem isn't 2012, it's 2013.

Yes there is a scholarship available for 2012 (and as you said, it could be Jeter) but we already have 13 kids scheduled to be on scholarship in 2013, So if Jeter gets a ship for next year, somebody would have to leave for the following year (best guess would be that Billy Oliver wouldn't come back for his sixth year).

That's a possibility. It's also possible that he comes back next year but does not return in 2013 which is when we have the scholarship crunch.

I would guess there will be another opening with Billy Oliver deciding to hang it up - I think he'll be able to graduate this year (be finished academically).

So there's the Alexis opening and the Oliver opening - but I kinda get screwed up on the years also - maybe someone can comment on how many spots are avaiable for 2012 and 2013 (considering the commits that we already have)?

Here's a visual. Since Oliver was only slated to be on scholarship for one more season, it only opens up a spot for the 2012-13 season.

There are a few ways to fill that opening. 1: find a JUCO who would only be around for one season, or 2: give the free ride to someone on the roster who won't be on scholarship (IE Collella).

There is still one scholarship open from the vacated Alexis spot, meaning Pat could fill it with a class of 2012 player (IE Jeter) or stow it away for 2013.

You've got Newbill slotted wrong for 2012-13 and 2013-14. He'll be a sophomore and junior in those years.

It would make sense to give the Oliver ship to someone like Colella but giving it to a JUCO doesn't. JUCO transfers don't have 1 year of eligibility, they have two (or sometimes three like Glover). So awarding it to a JUCO next year doesn't solve your 2013-14 problem.

What would be a possibility is finding someone who could use the graduate student transfer rule - someone like Brandon Wood who graduated from Valpo last year but is playing for Michigan State this year.

Sasa doesn't get brought back for his 5th year. Problem solved.

It might not even have to come to that. He would be 24 already entering his 5th year. He could leave on his own.

Either way, I don't see him still here at that point in time.
