Chambers Job Security

  • Have their been any rumblings around about his job security given the team performance this year?

    No.

and there shouldn't be....he is recruiting well - i mean he is basically playing without 5 scholarship players and two scholarship guards - none of which is a point guard.

Next year - he will have a full compliment of guards and can run his offense.

He also inherited a team last year that lost 4 out of 5 starters....he really came in with alot of bad luck and it continued with injuries this year.

  • He's not going any where. Why would they get rid of him? He's got guys coming in next year that have some talent. They didn't get rid of Ed, so why would they get rid of Pat??

    NittanyLion21

  • No way should they get rid of Chambers. I still think Chambers is the type of coach that will turn things around.

    CharlestonLion

  • Would be a terrible move. In a few years you'll be begging Chambers to stay.

  • If PSU would get rid of Pat after two years I would never watch or attend another bball game. They put up with Dechellis forever and I think Pat is right on the cusp on turning the corner. How bad would PSU have been under Dechellis if Talor Battle would have had a season ending injury. People who think Pat should be fired are complete idiots.

  • Say what you will about their record this year, but Pat hasn't given up, the team is still playing hard, and there is help on the way with recruits next year and with Tim coming back. I think you just write-off this year from an evaluation standpoint re the job that Pat has done and look to what he did last year and what he does over the next two years before you even THINK about whether he's the guy or not.

    GRS154

  • If that were to happen, you might as well shut the program down. Pat Chambers is doing a great job with what he has. It doesn't change overnight. He's had some difficult decisions and issues that have set him back, but this program is no doubt on the rise. I expect within the next two years we will be mainstays in the "middle of the pack" of the Big Ten bball programs. With that said, his tireless recruiting will pay dividends and should get him inside with some big time recruits. That will pay out for the program long-term. His passion is overwhelming and he will have success. It only takes one or two key individuals to catapult this program into the big leagues. I suspect that Pat will deliver...no doubt in my mind!!!

  • I've not heard any, not that I"m well connected, but I'd certainly be disappointed if there were. This year was going to be rough before losing our best player. He needs at least another 2-3 years in my opinion before we begin to see real results.

  • Besides the fact that it would make zero sense, who exactly would PSU hire to take his place?

    PSUfan28

  • a program like PSU is going to take no less than 4-5 years to change. Even asking about this in his second season with his only star player out for the year is kind of silly IMO.

    Exactly.

    GRS154

  • the only way Chambers shouldn't be given a full recruiting cycle (5 years) to show notable progress is if Petino, Bohiem, Izzo, Coach K, Roy Williams, Billy Donovan, Bo Ryan, etc want to come to PSU and PSU is willing to pay them enough to get them here and keep them. Since there is absolutely ZERO chance that happens, I think we we have the best possible guy to build a program from the ashes over the long term.

I have said since day one that this is a 5 year rebuilding job due to the lack of talent that Ed left on the roster and also the pathetic state of the PSU basketball brand. You gotta give him at least 5 years and then re-evaluate.

    getmyjive11

  • No rumbling nor should there be. However, the blind worship of the man should stop too. He brings great energy, but is unproven as a head basketball coach at this level

can he develop talent? Guys who he said got much better in the offseason, like Travis and Graham, have shown very little. Maybe a guy like Travis just needs more time. Maybe he just needs his own guys

can he identify talent? Chambers watched Newbill practice all last year and thought he could play point guard if Frazier went down. Very bad idea. He still had a couple months to recruit after Lewis transferred and only went after forwards. Taylor and Jack showed promise in the OOC, but have either hit the freshman wall or need more development - probably both. Chambers first recruit, Akosa M., is an epic failure at guard. Chambers said he would be the needed 3 point shooter, but he is just another guy that chucks up airballs. The fact he can't beat out walk-ons like Colella and Montminy says it all

can he recuit? Yes, so far. Taylor was a good get and this next class looks solid, but only time will tell

can he coach x's and o's? I have zero idea. Thanks to the roster he and mostly Dechellis brought in, we have no shooters or anyone who can bring the ball up the court . How could one ever evaluate that? The defensive energy is usually good but some of the diving from behind for attitude points is just stupid.

Overall, I predict he will prove to be the man for the job. I would even bet on it. I just would wager very little. I expect 6 B1G wins next year. For the people that think this should take 5-6 years, that is a folly. This is basketball where a couple guys can make a gigantic difference. Young guys can excel and you don't need a 10 deep roster to compete. I watched people blame Jerry Dunn for all of Dechellis ills for far too many years, I would hope people would have learned there lesson.

Plus, its not uncommon -- if not typical -- for a basketball program to regress in the second year under a new head coach. Chambers needs at least two more seasons before we can even form an informed opinion.

  • Wow. I did not mean anything by it. Where I grew up a coach that did not produce for two years he usually was gone. I am not close to the basketball program hence why I asked.

5 years to turn a program around which seems a bit of a stretch...all you need is one recruiting class....

Actually makes a lot of sense...if someone is not producing why would you continue to perpetuate that any longer instead of making a change.

I am a fan of the guy and think he has done a lot of good in the community, but have not see any results on the court...I mean Northwestern has a better men's program than we do..NORTHWESTERN...

Only brand name coaches like a Coach K could turn that mess Dechellis left in a year or two. He left an absolutely empty cupboard, bailing ship with a productive senior class. Unless you have a major name, which PSU won't draw with the current state of the program, you're not going to get super impact freshman in numbers.

Never had a brand name in basketball...Actually

Tony Bennett at Washington State in 2006 did it.
Al Skinner at BC in 2000 did it.
Billy Gillispie did it at Texas El Paso went from 6-24 to 24-8...
Jim O’Brien at OSU in 1998 did it too...not exactly household / brand names

Skinner did it in year four and they already had something going at BC while OBrien was HC there. When OBrien left BC in 97-98, he was a recognizable name and took all his "a list" recruits and guys with him to Ohio state. It was in his second year where these guys showed up big and went to final four in 99 for the bucks. Movin from well respected BC and taking guys with you is different from going from BU to PSU.

As for Gillispie, we can see where he's at now, he did to UTEP what patty did to BU.
As for Bennett, he was at WSU from 2003 as an associate head coach, named his fathers successor, so those kids were coming in on his squad from 2003 building up to 2006. Was an NBA guy, coached under his dad, then Bo Ryan after Ryan took over for his dad, then worked with his dad again and took over in 2006 just in time to break out. And his dad was a recognizable name, as you see bo Ryan was part of that coachin tree.

I see what you're saying, but all these other guys had some major time or some sort of value to their name prior to making an impact. As for Gillispie, he's comparable to what PC did at BU.

Either way, I'm rooting for the guy and giving him a little more time here at PSU before passing judgement.
