Cause For Recruiting Concern?

  • new-era said...

Well several of PSU's top guys are getting hounded by Urban and quite frankly PSU hasnt won one of those head to head battles yet. Why dont you think Breneman could end up there?

I believe if PSU is contend with UM and OSU a John Gruden type hire was needed, This is just a nearly impossible task for BOB

Did you give up hope for Rocky when Ivan Drago killed Apollo? It's way too early to raise the white flag. You ask why don't you think Breneman could end up at OSU? Why do you assume that he will? Not every kid falls for Meyer's BS. Some kids want to come to Penn State. Will BOB sign a great class, who knows? But we have enough quality kids that it's possible.

People get too caught up in the Urban Meyer hype, yes he's a good recruiter but it's not like he's going to land the top 25 players in the country every year. Every commit in the 2013 class would still be commits if anyone else was a coach, all of those kids grew up OSU fans. The idol worship of him by OSU fans is scary, they literally think they'll flip every recruit that Urban wants.

  • It's February 22nd, relax...recruiting classes are not made after the first Junior day just like championships are not won when the ink is dry for each recruiting class. Those same 4 and 5 star recruits that Urban gets still have to come to Happy Valley twice in their career in front of 100,000+ fans (preferably at night)...unless they get suspended or arrested first which is another staple of an Urban Meyer team!

Why isn't psu desirable? Were you in a coma from November til now?

I think too many here are overlooking this fact. One know it all here told me the scandal had NO effect on the staff hiring. Really?? I believe the kid from WV, Switzer was ready to pull the trigger Sunday but suddenly he wanted to involve his mom in the decision. Think she wasn't having something to say about the "situation"? This is going to be the case with many of these kids for more than just this year. The best thing that can happen is the 2012 season and get it behind so the staff can have something to point to, hopefully an upset or two, as selling points. Right now there's a HUGE cloud of uncertaintly hanging over the school as well as the ability of this staff. These are facts that can't be ignored.

As an example of a kid who couldn't be flipped by Meyer, even though he was from OH and was even committed previously to OSU.

Ah, I see. Yeah, they're adamant that they're going to get our top safety commit to flip to them, although every time he's asked about it, he says he hates OSU and won't ever visit. He also is one of our biggest recruiters but OSU fans blindly believe that he'll flip to the on NSD. lol

  • The sky is falling! Everyone panic. Oh wait the sky already fell in november and we are still here. Give the staff a little time, they are doing the work that is necessary to bring us back. Lots of high end recruits are interested and once one pulls the trigger many will follow. It takes a special leader to be the first sometimes. Come on AB.

  • Not enough distance (time) has been put between us and the Sandusky mess, especially with the trial still looming. I personally think we end up with at least a top 20 class for 2013. Kids (and parents) are going to take their time in searching for the right school and best fit for football. It is their future after all. I think BOB is putting in the extra effort to help ease the parents fears of sending their kids here. Still, it may take a little longer than we like. And, hopefully, some of the investigations (NCAA) will end in a timely fashion, so other schools can't use that weapon (sanctions) against us. Basically, give BOB a chance to work and see what he can do before we have a mass suicide here. In the meantime, take some valium and chill out.

Will you relax? Rome wasn't built in a day, and no program is defined by any single class. Let Bob coach some games, win some games, get his message out - and you'll see results.

I disagree we're rebuilding by the way...but at the same time, you need to let the new staff get settled in and start building relationship with kids.

Last year, Michigan was helped a great deal by having Matison on staff - the Ravens DC. This year I think we'll get a pretty good impact by having the former Pats OC as our HC. Already I think we lead for some good looking WRs, a star RB, and a blue chip QB - all positions we would have struggled with the old staff this year, because of our offense the last two years. Eventually, the OLineman will come along for us as well.

Just stop. The success or failure of the BOB hire will be determined in a few years, not a few months.

I disagree- this next recruiting cycle will be a big reason for obriens success or failure in the next few years- new era is right- we need to win on the recruiting trail now. When kids see recruiting success, they want to jump on board

We can talk about osu and mich and how storied thier programs are and how easy it is to recruit there.....well, we should be in the same boat. Top 10 wins all time, 110000 in the stands, and lots of tradition. It's all about the guy recruiting- osu just got slapped with sanctions and fired a coaching legend, and Michigan has been bad for 5 years.....but they have good recruiters who are killing it.....we should be too and I expect that to happen sooner than later

Got slapped with sanctions? Lol, come on, its a one year bowl ban these recruits will never see.
Fired a coaching legend? Yeah, Jim Tressel wasn't Bear Bryant or Joe Paterno. And the guy they replaced him with is Urban Meyer, twice the coach that Tressel was.
Michigan may have been bad under RichRod, but a BCS game goes a long long way.

We just went through a scandal of epic proportions. We followed it up with a coaching search that was a debacle. Its a slow start, that's for sure. I think BOB will pick it up, and myself frustrated it isn't going q0uicker. But I am not surprised at this, how can I be? Don't be stupid and realize he is starting at minimum 3 months behind.

Recruiting classes won't be why BOB fails, wins and losses will be. Player development matters as much in that as recruiting does.

sorta like Brady Hoke at Michigan????

He was a huge name!!! (sarcasm)

  • This thread reminds me of the emotion ups and downs of recruiting. Recruiting can take you way up, or way down.

You can dig in your heels and remain up or down stubbornly no matter what is currently going on as some will.

You can ride that rollercoaster up and down to no end, as others choose.

I prefer staying in the middle level ground, not getting too exited or upset, as it always makes its way back to that middle plateau no matter what is the current news.

    Fun stuff. thumbsup

I agree about the big name thing- but in all fairness, hoke did win at sdsu( Not the easiest place to win) and was from the old Michigan regime....obrien doesnt have any track record bc he has never been a headcoach anywhere....he can say he rode Tom bradys coattails for several years is about it.

With all that said- and given the situation, I think he is doing a good job so far and seems to be creating a positive vibe and some excitement for the program

    Spulv400

  • And I agree with that Spulv400. O'Brien has yet to prove himself. He hasn't been a headcoach yet. I do feel good about him however. He's made many positive changes that helped modernize our program. I don't know if he'll succeed or not but I'm feeling pretty decent about the whole situation. I think he has a better chance than not of being successful.

  • It is way to early to judge this staff or the overall effect of the scandal on recruiting. That said, so far O'Brien has lost 3 4 star recruits and received commitments from 1. Getting highly rated kids early on is essential for a recruiting class so that other kids are assured that a program will have talent around them to compete. Given the uncertainty around PSU, the overall lack of talent brought in the last 2 years, and the fact that most "experts" predict the scandal will knock PSU down a couple rungs, getting kids to verbal early is probably more important for PSU than any other school in the country. So I see the OP's point. I'm hoping that the first verbal comes soon, and it starts some real momentum for this class.
