CDT Interview with Dave Joyner

  • CDT has a short story on an interview with Dave Joyner. One thing caught my eye - season ticket sales down 4K from last year.

Joyner covers wide range of topics in interview | Latest news | CentreDaily.com

Penn State acting director of athletics David Joyner is focused on the future, but admits he still has to deal with past.

  • Were not last year's season ticket sales much lower than the previous year??

  • I think there are a number of things that play into the season tickets being down.

    1. The Sandusky Scandal... People are still sour over that

    2. The Economy... I think people have put PSU football tickets down on their priority list because they can't afford it and every game is televised live.. So they can save money by watching it from the comfort of their own living room.

    3. The team.... Lets be honest, the team hasn't exactly been world beaters the last couple of years.. If the team wins, people will show up.

    4. Gas Prices.. Most people coming to the games are from Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.. That's probably an extra $60-65 per game just for gas

    5. Hotel Prices.. Have you guys seen the hotel prices? First off, most of them have a two night minimum; which sucks.

  • The only thing that concerns me about Joyner is that doctors are notoriously bad businessmen. I have no doubt he can deal with everything else. Hopefully there are some number crunchers behind him. Having the conference as a backstop is big.

Speaking of the conference..a poster elsewhere said he "thought" Joyner and O'Brien would rather be in the ACC for a variety of reasons. Not that he ever SPOKE to either one about the subject. I guess he's clairvoyant. At the end of the day it's about $$$ and I think both guys know which conference swings the biggest stick in that regard.

I thought it was rumored to be down more than 4K, like 15K or so......not as bad as i thought

Yeah, 4k is not that bad, all things considered.

  • The former season ticket holders I know gave this reason: They were too busy to make every game, and given the seat license costs, it's cheaper to pay $200+ a ticket for a couple of good games, and even less than face value for a couple of nice weather early season blowouts than to pay for a full season and then deal with selling or giving away games they couldn't make. Do the math, for a normal, pretty good seat, it works out, and that's a problem for season ticket sales. This isn't like the NFL with parity, you have 2-3 blowout games against opponents with zero interest value, and tickets are worth less than face value, 2-3 games against decent to good teams with some interest level worth slightly more than face value, and a couple of big games worth a lot more.

4k below last seasons tickets, so maybe 15k total.

  • It's too bad they can blame the Sandusky Scandal. I still think STEP has a lot more to do with poor sales. Providing multiple excuses for poor attendance will take years longer to fix.

Timing is everything, as they say, and PSU has had terrible timing for the past several years.

STEP - not a terrible idea if introduced at a time other than early in the recession. Should have been phased in over two or three seasons.

Bad home schedule. Fans are asked to pay for a new Lexus and deliver a KIA.

A beloved coach fired and died before having his name cleared.

The "scandal", as you point out, is too easy to blame, but it contributed as well.

No mention of step seat license?

  • If Penn State was playing top end football and playing for titles this is all a non-issue improve the product make it sexy and people will come. The rest means little to nothing.
