Bye Bye Minor League Baseball Atmosphere

If I look over your requests, you are basically asking for PSU to move more towards a high school presentation and not a minor or pro team presentation. Other than the elimination of the microphone man and maybe more Blue Band, PSU is not going to eliminate or change the other items. The scoreboards (video and LDC boards) are going to be sold or incorporated into "PSU partnership packages" For example, as part of the UniMart deal they will get in game static sinage, 10 mentions on the LCD boards and one "in game" live promotion and six radio spots on the official PSU football broadcast.

As for the endzones, they usually go with the "marks" that PSU sells and makes money from. So, in theory, you see the mark in the enzone, you then think I need a new tshirt with that mark on it. In theory, that also drives the brand. I can't see PSU putting any logo on mark on the field that they can't trademark or make money from unless it is a Big Ten logo or mark that the league mandates.

I understand they make a lot of money of the ads on the scoreboards, but they could do a lot better job of showing scores from around the country. When I was at the OSU game this year, I was really impressed with them having a board committed to out of town scores.

  • How about a new $10 million scoreboard/replay board or two? IMO our current screens suck (or perhaps I'm just spoiled by the boards at the Phillies and Eagles stadiums).

  • PSU's boards are not HD. That is the issue with our boards. Actually, the Eagles are not HD either but they are looking at replacing their boards. In addition, the Eagles boards are bigger and in the middle of the stadium, so that makes it easier to see. The new Phillies boards will make for a bettter viewing experience for the fans.

I'm an alumni so obviously seeing fans sitting the entire game and refusing to stand up on 3rd down frustrates me to no end as well.

Believe me, there are fans that want to stand up and yell and cheer. But the second we do, old gradma or grandpa-blue yell and gripe to "sit down'" and "be quiet". Then they get an usher or complain to someone and we get told to sit down.

I'd love nothing more than to stand up the whole time or at least be able to stand up on 3rd and 4 and yell to my hearts content.

In the same boat as you. I'm an alum, I've got season tix and I want to stand up and yell at any big play but all the stodgy folk around me make me feel like an asshole for supporting my team. If you want peace and quiet for the game - watch it on tv. Live sporting events should be lively and engaging.
I could've sworn the guy next to me at the Nebraska game this year was mute (minus the occasional grumblings) until I started chatting him up around the second quarter.

I am with you guys there are times I'm on my feet for a big third down or fourth down only to look around and see that I'm on island...I got yelled at for standing 5 mins before kickoff of the Eastern Michigan game I snapped at the guy only to turn around and find what appeared to be an 85 yr old couple sitting there. Of course I felt like a complete jerk. I thought of my own grandpa and even my Dad. The bleachers were the reason both stopped attending game I can only imagine them trying to get up and down all game long....Unfortunately for a lot of us I think proper etiquette is to stay seated unless you can't see...I have no problem with the arm wave to invite standing but if it isn't accepted we have to sit down...one of the great things about college football is often shared through generations. I have a feeling while I prefer to stand now that I just might prefer to sit in 50 years.

It's like a dream has come true - we can go back to Pre-2004 nonsense.

...yep, back to the days where the crowd sat on its hands and never made any noise. Can't wait.

Only 2 things I would change are:
    1. Microphone Guy
    2. After a touchdown the only music played is the fight song by the Blue Band.

There may have been more pageantry and Blue Band before Guido, but with a few exceptions the Beave never consistently rocked like it does now. Guido amped up the energy in the stadium and got the students more involved. You weren't hearing Herbstreit say "This is the best student section in the country" in 1999.

Check the link below. Penn State has looked into it, and I thought it would be a go for this spring. However, I haven't seen anything new on this since May of last year. We will see...

While we are just airing all of our complaints about game-day can I want to put the following out there.

    1) I loathe "Twist & Shout" or whatever it is they play exiting half-time 2) And my god does Living on a Prayer irk me to no end.

I'll admit the first time they played CCR when it was raining, I thought it was kind of cool. But it was before the game & the students were just kind of having a good time. But I don't need Journey or some crap band from Jersey to get me fired up.

Remember folks - the stadium expansion has helped keep the noise in. We don't need AAA baseball antics - we need the blue band, a passionate fan base and old people to realize it's acceptable to stand-up and yell on 3rd down

Sorry, but I completely disagree. THe endzone expansion had NOTHING to do with making Penn State games more exciting and noisy. PSU games in the 90's were a snoozefest with rare exception (Nebraska 02 comes to mind). Guido was responsible for putting the pieces in place that culminated in the awesome showing for the OSU game in '05. Your hatred for all things Paterno can't change that fact.

This has nothing to do with Paterno.

It's simple acoustics. The way a building is built can either help contain or dissipate noise. If you can't acknowledge that, I can't go any further in this discussion.

There were acoustic studies done on the stadium. It was found if they relocated the student section to its current location it would increase noise levels dramatically. I want to say it was over a 25% increase.

    I guess it was a 50% increase.

It's not only the moving of students its additions to the stadium.

Look at what Michigan just did as far as additions - it will hold noise a lot easier
