  • it's a position of dire need for the class and I think we take at least 3 so the pick-up wouldn't be that bad...that said, I'm indifferent on him as a prospect. Another major major bonus that would probably be worth the verbal itself would be the impending Rutgers barometer.

  • Didn't remember him stating he wanted to rap up by next month but he'd be a welcomed addition.

  • I think Sean stated he wasn't as high on PSU's list. Brown even is quoted here as saying he hopes the staff has as much interest as the previous staff.

I'm not sure; I got a feeling from reading the article that he would love to commit to PSU but he's not sure PSU is quite as high on him. Makes me wonder if he has a current commitable offer.

I thought the same thing. But it will come down to if the staff thinks they wont need a commitment from him for where they stand with others...

That is if he wants to commit at all.

    Same. We'll see though.
I hadn't realized this site rated him so high. After taking a second look at his film I'm more impressed with him than I was before where I was kind of on the fence about him as a prospect.
Needs to work on getting through blocks more, and needs to add to his frame (which isn't a concern with Fitz2 anymore).
I do really like his length, though. It's a great asset in coverage against RBs coming out of the backfield.
I wonder what he would time in the 40. There are times on the field where he closes very quickly, and then other times at camp showings when opposing RBs get a bit too much separation for my liking in coverage.

Can someone shed some light - what is the difference between an "offer" and a "commitable offer"? How does the staff say you have an offer from PSU but we won't let you commit yet? Is that really an offer? Not saying that is the case with Buddy Brown, just more of a general question. Thanks.

  • I'm not really blown away by Brown to be honest. I know he's ranked highly here but I don't really see it in the film. He definitely looks 6'3'', and he diagnoses plays well. But simply put I did not see 4.6 speed on his film. In my opinion, he plays way too tall, and he likes to play pattycake with blockers which is not going to work at the D-1 level. His tackling form is also very poor, I didn't see a solid form tackle once.

Truthfully, I like Deeb and Rankin at LB much more than Brown.

  • Pretty much every offer has contingencies like as long as u are one of the first two of that position to commit. It also sounds like the previous staff offered him so hell be showing an offer in the recruiting databases even though the new staff may not actually have a spot open to him.

In general it's a "you can commit after other things play out" situation. Here, it's a bit different since it's an offer from the old staff, so the new staff might not see eye to eye with the old offers. It's pretty much BS most times and means "no you don't have an offer, but you could have one later if things don't work out how we think."

Strange thing, though, is one constant between the two staffs is Vanderlinden, so I'd think that ultimately it would be his call. Though I realize that offers are usually group decisions, it seems the opinion of the LB coach about a LB should carry more weight than that of, say, the O-line coach

Not sure what film you watched. I looked at this from VBR - http://victorybellrings.com/hub/lb-buddy-brown-film/ and I think that you see his speed when he makes his commit and goes but he is really good at reading a play and staying with his job. That is really hard to get a hs LB to do.

His tackling techinque was actually pretty good on most plays. I really liked the kick off coverage clip and the pass into the flats right afterwards. He squares up, slows down, drops his shoulder and wraps up around the waist and slides down the legs. Not highlight material but what I want a open field tackle to look like every time.

I thought he did a great job handfighting with blockers until it was time to commit to where he wanted to go. He didn't get moved back or tied up and lefthimself free to make plays. When he had to take on a pulling gaurd he dropped in the shoulder, took him on and bounced off to make the tackle in the backfield. How you play the blocker depends on who it is blocking you.

When you move him back off the line where I think he plays in college then you will see even more of his reads and athletic ability. I had not looked at his film unitl now as I did not think that this staff was to high on him but I think he would be a great get for OLB.
