Boy killed in Pittsburgh Zoo

  • Sad news today in Pittsburgh. A 2 year old boy who happened to live on my street in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, was mauled by African Painted Dogs at the Pittsburgh Zoo. It puts a lot of things in perspective, and I am asking everyone to please pray for the parents. I saw them walking into their house tonight and I will not forget the look of pain on their faces. Thanks.

  • OMG, that is such horrible news, and how awful for them. I can't begin to understand the pain and loss they are feeling right now. My deepest sympathy to them and prayers.

  • Apparently the mother held the child over the ledge so he could see better and dropped him. It's horrible but what was the parent thinking?!

  • I was watching my 2 year old nephew and heard this during news brief of half-time of Steelers game...Really just makes you nervous how life can go so quick. And to think his parents and prob. other people at the zoo saw what happened.

  • That is awful to hear and my prayers are with that boy and his family. At the same time, these parents need to realize that railings are there for a reason and maybe it is not a great idea to dangle a child over them. I can't even comprehend what the mom must be going through if she was the one who dropped him.

    Keep your posts positive please. I've done similar things. Picked up a kid and put their feet on a 6 inch wide railing to see something too. I won't now, but I am sure she wasn't the first to do that. I know this child and the mother. Gave them candy last night and she constantly played on the street with her kid.

  • What a shame. I've taken my two boys to the Pittsburgh Zoo before. I would put my 3yr old on my shoulders if he cannot see. My 1yr old is in the carriage obviously. This is by no means the mothers fault, this is a tragic accident and I feel for her. These zoo's need to take action to ensure things like this never happen again. I know there are warning signs, but they need to build higher walls, so people cannot lean on them. These animals may be captive but they still are wild animals.

    This was an awful tragedy, but I don't see this as the fault of the zoo. I do feel terrible for the parents, but the fact is they should have used common sense. I severely dislike this need to blame entities like a zoo for failing to make their exhibits entirely idiot-proof.

    Oh I agree and I don't mean to make it seem, like I'm entirely blaming the zoo. I've been to the Pittsburgh Zoo on numerous occasions, and they are a terrific facility. People should use common sense in bring there toddler child so close to such a dangerous animal. Like I said these animals may be captive but they are still wild in some way.

  • Sounds like a great parent who had an accident. Obviously the parent was just trying to give kid a better experience and the accident occured. Really awful makes you wonder if Zoos need armed guards at stattions throughout the zoo so they can quickly subdue animals in situations like this because i would imagine even a fairly quick 2 or 3 minute response time would just be too late.

    It was an accident. For those of you who are sending thoughts and prayers, thank you. Something else you should all know is that this little boy had vision issues and wore special glasses.

    I awoke still feeling awful. I drove past their house this am and saw his uncle just slumped on their car. I can't imagine the pain.

    Are you serious??? This is the fault of the parents and only their fault. The fence/railing was 5 feet high which means that it would be impossible for anyone in the country to fall over it unless they were acting irresponsibly.

    This was a horrible accident and I feel bad for the family but they have noone else to blame but themselves.

    Just lost her baby to a pack of dogs. Jail time is no punishment for her. I am a therapist who has worked with parents and siblings who've lost their children... the pain of this will never leave that Mom no matter what therapy she gets. The guilt will be unbearable. Jail is not needed, and it is a foolish comment to even post. No doubt it is your way to express your disgust and frustration and shock with the situation ... but still foolish.

    They have so many b/c they were given 7 of them, mainly due to them being almost extinct.

    While I feel terrible for the family, and my thoughts and prayers go out to them, this is on the mother and not the zoo.

    Also, I believe that the zoo was breeding the animals since they are endangered.

    Do you think it would have mattered if there were 3-4 vs 11? Animals are going to react to something invading their territory no matter how many there are.

    Also, right now they don't even know whether the child died from the fall (around 11 feet) or from the animals so it could turn out that it wouldn't have mattered what kind of animal was in the enclosure.
