Borovnjak picking up pace for Lions

Penn State finally found some offense in its last two games, much of it coming from diligent big man Sasa Borovnjak.

  • Borovnjak, the 6-foot-9, 240-pounder who is playing his final season as a Nittany Lion, has improved his play, in part, by watching extra film.

He does have another year of eligibilty though correct? Are we 100% he's gone?

He has another year but has said earlier in the season that this will be his final season. He'll turn 24 this summer.

Thanks Jeff, I must've missed that. That's Tim's spot for next year I guess.

    Great article

  • I'd love to know if he planned to leave after this year, if it was mutual, or if it was more of a carefrontation. I'm guessing he's good enough to head across the pond and play professionally and turning 24 makes that seem like a good reason not to wait another year. However, Graham has not progressed, if not regressed, and Ackerman looks like he doesn't even belong out there. The way Sasa has stepped up, I'd love to see him next year. He's our only productive big and we're losing him while retaining 2 others that are simply much worse.

  • Shame the big guy may finally be coming around after all this while. I'd too would rather see him hang on another year than one of his replacements.

Although I agree about Ackerman and Graham I do not want him to come back. Make way for the new. Even without a big man we'll be better with Tim Frazier and John Johnson. Ross Travis can rebound like a beast so a lineup of Frazier, Newbill, Marshall, Johnson (come January) and Travis... will be MUCH better than anything we put of floor this year. And this isn't even counting Brandon Taylor.

That's almost a 5 guard starting line up. Travis is the only forward and he is a SF. don't you think we would get murdered with that line up? no one over 6'6".

I'm not proposing that as our lineup. IMO, it would be better to play with 4.5 guards who are athletic and can score with one good rebounder than the lineup we currently have.

It's not "heading across the pond", it's going home. Big difference.

Since the day that he arrived on campus, I don't think anyone really expected that we'd get five years out of him. The biggest worry probably was that he'd leave after three like Jan Jagla.

    Depends.

At the moment, we have Isaiah Washington committed to that class, that leaves zero more available. However, that could change depending on the solution to the problem that we short one for this fall. If an underclassman leaves, that would open one up for 2014. If an upperclassman leaves, then we still have none available for 2014.

gotcha. We are going to need someone in the post though and while Travis is "junkyard dog" rebounder, he not much of a post defender or scorer. We'd probably score more points, but other teams would score at will in the post. With Sasa out the door, I think we need to pray that Moore can come in and contribute from day one.

I still have hope for Graham at least getting better. Jack is tall and will have another year and offseason to hopefully add more bulk. Moore will be an improvement but I'm worried he will get pushed around in the BIG.

In any case there's no scenario in which we won't be better next year overall. Of course, that is a very low bar to raise.
