Bolden's release denied

  • BoulderFish said...

Ok, now I'm getting really worried that this wasn't Joe's last season -- Otherwise why would he care if Bolden left to pursue his football career elsewhere? My mood is not getting any better.

I'm back and forth about if joe will coach another game or not.

IMO, Bolden's dad is driving this situation, not Rob.

It makes little sense for him to leave right now, and the public spectacle put on by his father reeked of butthurt.

I'm not worried about the recruiting fallout. If Joe sticks around, it can't get worse, and if a new HC comes in, it's a non-issue. Big deal.

If part of the problem truly is that Rob and his father feel/felt like Rob wasn't getting proper coaching by his position coach, it makes total sense. I was ecstatic when Bolden and PJ selected PSU, I just couldn't understand why (football/QB wise) We don't exactly have a great QB coach who gets ready for the NFl, which is what these kids ultimate goal is. Are QB coach has been criticized by people who actually know football and QB play and at a higher level. Why would you stay if Joe and Jay were going to stay and you felt the position coaching was lacking?

    I agree with this.

I'm guessing Big Rob has been in the ear for awhile and is driving this one home.

I can't say I disagree with him though ... I'm not sold that there would be an open competition and quite frankly I never once thought we would keep Jones and Bolden full term. So why delay it?

Wait for spring to come around and miss all the drills he would have had gone through if he went somewhere else?

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • I think 42 is spot on.

Not sure I see this affecting recruiting that much. As far as I know, we don't make a regular practice of denying a player's release to transfer. I have little doubt Newsome and others will be allowed to leave.

Is it a wise move for Bolden to transfer if he wants to develop towards being an NFL QB? Of course. Does this seem based on emotions and his father's vindictiveness? Yeah, it does. It's worth making Bolden wait and see if a cool head helps the situation. I think Bolden was treated relatively unfairly. At the same time, it seems fairly hasty to want to transfer now.

  • pete - it's too early to know what is going to happen, and the best thing for Bolden to do would be to give it his best shot in spring ball and see what happens.

Who knows...we might have a new HC...he might win the starting job (again).

I agree it's too early to tell what's going to happen. I would just personaly agree that if he wants a shot in the NFL it is best for him to go to another school.

I also don't believe that if Joe stays, there will be an open and fair QB competition. Which is another reason why "I" would understand what he is (possibly) doing.

  • Wow. I just got home from my homeland of South Africa and I see that we're falling apart here. Didn't really expect us to beat Florida, but then I didn't expect the fallout in the aftermath either. Didn't see the game and the 5 Int's - thankfully. I'm just assuming Joe really botched this one, seems obvious he's had his favorite all along and was just waiting for that opportunity get Bolden out when he did vs NW, and to not give him a sniff when McGloin was playing for Florida, I'd se that writing on the wall too.
Guess our Qb position is a 2 horse race in a 2 deep position in the spring. Awesome.
    Nice job Joe.
Wish we could be one of those programs coach hunting right about now.

  • Here's another question.

All year long (since Moxie stepped in) we have heard how much more vocal MCGloin was, and how the team responded better to him, how he commanded the huddle better, etc. Unless Rob comes out eventually and says that did was a decision solely driven by his father (b/c dad is the only one being quoted in the articles I am reading), how does this affect him in the eyes of his teammates?

How does Rob win this huddle/team over again. Not trying to knock the kid but I think it is worth mentioning only b/c that was one the things everyone kept mentioning was how he wasn't as vocal in the huddle as McGloin was. Does this cost him any credibility with his teammates? Or do they accept that he may give them the best chance to win and bygones are byegones. Just a thought and one of my fears if he stays, and let me repeat, I DO want him to stay.

    What do you guys think?

SC - I'm not 100% certain on this, but I believe it's a "process"......they asked, they got denied by the first level entity (staff). Now I think they can appeal to a broader committee made up of mostly non-athlietic dept staff. So I think if they really want to get out before this semester starts, they can pursue that. Athletic aid runs from July-July, so if he really wants to go, he can go, just not right now.

I found this summary type thing.

    Getting Permission to Contact:
    • If a recruit is enrolled full-time in a 4 year school they need to get a written letter from their AD or compliance officer.

    • If a recruit signed the NLI they will need to request a release from their coach.

    • They can write to any NCAA college, but they can’t receive a response until that coach has your permission to contact and/or release papers.

    • The recruit’s current school can deny permission or their release. They can also determine where they are allowed to transfer to. Intra-conference rules will vary.

o In this case you can appeal or you will have to sit out a year.

o If you sit out a year, you must pass a full-time schedule without taking summer classes.

Jmaus has a good point. I cant imagine many players on the team being happy with him right now. A lot of these guys waited much longer for their shot. What scares me is that maybe they are on his side, and this whole thing could turn them against the staff and cause more transfers.

    e,

I did not see that but, not doubting it. I think you may be right but this is a double-edged sword. If the players support their teammate (and we have a lot of young players so that could well be the case, then what do they think of their coach? i.e. Rumors of Fortt not being pleased with his PT, Joe's tradition of starting and playing the Seniors/upperclassmen. Were they promised differently during their recruitment, and then insulted when someone went back on their word and they were riding the pine b/c of it (Joe using injuries as a reason to sit a guy when he may be medically cleared)??

It's all just fuel to the "overhaul needed" fire.

You really think he's gonna say the rest of the team told Rob to quit being a b*tch?

Maybe he asked too quietly, and Joe couldn't hear him.

Good stuff ash...all you can really do is laugh at this point. It's hard, but I actually read something on a PSU site and smiled. Thanks.

  • Hi Sneakypete,

Just trying to understand your answer here. Are you implying the the team is supportive of Bolden's decision? Would that mean that the team feels Bolden got a raw deal and the team wanted him to remain the starter throughout the season? Or is it simply that McGloin's Cockiness/arrogance has worn thin on the team. Or possibly none of the above.

I'm just trying to get a grasp on the situation so any light you can shed would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

A lot of the players, especially the younger ones, felt like Rob was thrown under the bus.

    Thanks sneakypete.

Makes sense. Players tend to form click, and I would suspect the younger ones hang together. Also, I recall reading on the boards earlier in the year that their was a division between the younger players and the older players. This could have just feed into that.

On the flip side, do you have any knowledge of how the older players view the situation? Are they generally supportive of McGloin or Bolden or possible divided between the two?

    adromo

  • I don't know specifics obviously, but if I was an older player and heard that a true freshman was starting I can't say I would have high expectations for my last year or so at school.

Those guys probably just want to win. Bolden, although talented, didn't provide a few things that McGloin did bring to the table. McGloin and his confidence proved to be good for the short term, but in the long term just won't work out. You can build on leadership and confidence ... it's hard to gain talent.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.
