Bolden's release denied

  • Joe denied his release. This is sure an interesting result.

  • I'm sure Mr. Bolden is very happy about that.

I find it interesting that it's even an option to deny release from a scholarship.

  • joe denied his release because he is going to step down in the next few days so jay can take over as hc and coach rob up! hilarious

  • Isn't there that rule in place where if you transfer from one Big Ten school to another, you must pay your own way so it's not like Joe should have felt threatened by Bolden possibly going to a conference opponent.

    Nittany609

  • I believe the rule is that if Joe denies the release, Bolden can still go.

But then he has to pay his way for 1 year at that D1 school or go the JUCO route for 1 year. Also he can't transfer from 1 Big10 school to another without paying the whole way.

This is a selfish move that will really impact recruiting in a negative light. I do not see any positives from this what-so-ever. I can't imagine how can recruit now. What do you say "If you're not happy here you can't leave...."

Oh well, I'm sure Joe is having fun coaching since he doesn't have any other hobbies.

  • c'mon FJP, what do you expect, that Joe is going to cut grass or go fishing or spend time with his grandchildren?

  • Joe's got some balls, that's for sure. If one thing is transparent from all of this, it seems as though Bolden Sr. has done all of the talking for his son regarding this topic.

  • Maybe Joe just didn't like being strong-armed by an over-bearing parent.

Some fathers try to re-live their lives through their children. This may be one of those cases. While I understand it's hard for someone at the age of 18 to make those kind of life choices with mental clarity it's a bit over reaching of the father to be the mouth peace of Bolden Jr.

I'm afraid this probably will look bad on all parties in the end. At least the Devlin situation was handled with a bit more grace and civility.

  • This is getting interesting. Maybe he just wants the kid to stick it out through spring practice to be sure about the move, rather than making an impulse decision after part of a football season (at the urging of his dad, I'm sure).

Well, it appears at this point he might as well. Joe won't release him from his scholarship and he's probably going to go.

If he's going to go out in a blaze of glory - grab some gasoline and pour it on the bridge while leaving the 814.

  • SC - I'm not 100% certain on this, but I believe it's a "process"......they asked, they got denied by the first level entity (staff). Now I think they can appeal to a broader committee made up of mostly non-athlietic dept staff. So I think if they really want to get out before this semester starts, they can pursue that. Athletic aid runs from July-July, so if he really wants to go, he can go, just not right now.

This is what I was thinking as well. I think it would be wise for him to just stick around here at least until spring practice is over and then make a decision on his future.

You are right about this. He can appeal. This is a lose-lose situation for both parties. You have a kid that felt like he got screwed in a way, which he did, and doesn't want to be a part of the program. You have a coach who is going to get more negative publicity for this and he is keeping a kid that doesn't want to be here. This won't help recruiting at all as long as Joe is here. Michigan might as well be ignored as a recruiting territory for PSU now.

Joe also understands he has to try to kiss ass now to make things better. If Bolden leaves, you have a crappy redshirt junior QB, who played the worst game in PSU history as a QB and then a redshirt freshman that has no collegiate experience. Absent those, you have nothing. Add in the fact the only QB that PSU tried to recruit has the academics of a 10-year old, you have a problem. Imagine if Bolden left and all the sudden Jones sees the writing on the wall as far as McGloin.

  • Maybe he asked too quietly, and Joe couldn't hear him.

  • IMO the only reason joe should do this is because he thinks Bolden is going to be the starter next season or because Joe is leaving.

  • IMO, Bolden's dad is driving this situation, not Rob.

It makes little sense for him to leave right now, and the public spectacle put on by his father reeked of butthurt.

I'm not worried about the recruiting fallout. If Joe sticks around, it can't get worse, and if a new HC comes in, it's a non-issue. Big deal.

42 is right. This is being driven by the father. The mother even says it's a huge mistake, but it appears as though her considerations and advice are being completely ignored. While it's a ballsy move by Joe, I think he senses RB Sr's domination of the situation and is trying to give it some time rather than simply grant the immediate release. Although after reading up on RB Sr's professional background, he doesn't seem like the type of guy to soften or change his mind either.

  • My wife knows nothing about football and asked.... "why would he want to keep a kid on the team who doesn't even want to be there?"... from the mouths of babes.

Didn't let him in the game... won't let him off the team.... "Permission to wipe, sir?!"

Unless this is a much longer conversation that ends with JoePa wanting him to stick around til spring ball to see how things work out.... JoePa retires... then Bolden can think about things with a different perspective.... I fail to see ANY positives whatsoever to having denied his request.

  • Ok, now I'm getting really worried that this wasn't Joe's last season -- Otherwise why would he care if Bolden left to pursue his football career elsewhere? My mood is not getting any better.
