Bolden staying put according to CDT

  • JMO but if you expect loyalty from the players, you better give it to them.

I wouldn't exactly label Bolden as loyal as he tried to bail last year. I understand the perception of our program not kicking kids that don't pan out to the curb. We are not a football factory. With that said, O'Brien needs to and owes it to himself to maximize the 85 scholly's he has to hand out. Expediting the process of recycling some of these scholarships is going to be critical for BOB to obtain early success. There are plenty of people on this board that may not support that type of practice but a lot of things have already changed and more change is on the horizon with this program.

  • Don't see the point of him staying here if he wants to see a snap in a real game in college football.

if bolden were to leave i wouldn't blame him, he played a back and forth starting role, wanted to leave last year and wasn't allowed to go somewhere else where he could finish his college career the way he wanted, plus it would open up a scholorship for another player

I agree completely - it is not really Bolden's loyalty that I am concerned about, it is the other kids out there that are looking at PSU in the future, much the same way as PSU's summer camps also cater to kids that will never have a prayer of an offer as well as potential targets, it helps PSU's long term recruiting to be different (I think better) than other schools with this type of thing. If I am a parent with a kid that is looking at multiple schools, I am going to push him to the one that I think will stand by him no matter what happens. I hope that you are wrong about BOB sacrificing some of this to see short term returns. I think it hurts in the long run. I am not taking this stance because I am a fan of Bolden, I'm not. I am a fan of the program.

  • I wouldn't blame him either. However, he does go down as one of the worst qb's I've seen play at PSU. It should go without saying that he had to coach himself here, as he had no quarterback coach to help develop his talent. He did and does have talent though, that is without a doubt. He didn't have the intangibles, like Clark had. With the lack of qb coaching plus the lack of Bolden's intangibles, it was destined to be doomed. Qb's had to be able to coach themselves for there to be any success with the old qb coach; that's not this case with BOB.

  • Bolden played to the best of his abilities for Penn State for two years. He didn't play as well as we would have liked but I'm sure he's more disappointed than ANYONE on this board. Let's cut the kid some slack. He's already contributed more than the majority of the kids on the roster will in their entire careers. He has earned the right to his 4 years whether he plays another down or not.

If he's not leaving, why not give him a shot at safety and see what happens ?

Don't think he has the skill set or is physical enough to play safety. I honestly don't think he can play another position at the major college level.

Because he is not a safety. He has never displayed anything remotely resembling the athletism to play another position. He never looks fast, has no idea what to do in the face of contact, and lacks insticts. How that transalates to safety or any other position is beyond me. Heck, how he was ever listed as a duel threat still boggles my mind.

People saying he should try another position, have you ever watched him during a game. What exactly shows you "now there is an athlete" look? He has the same tools Morelli had, would you want to try him at safety?

There's a complete difference between the mental approach as a QB and if you are in a position that is pre-determined to hit someone or catch a ball or take a hit. You can't watch him at QB and say "oh he can't do anything else because he doesn't know how to take a hit as a QB." As a WR, you know you are going to catch a ball and take a hit immediately. As a safety, you know you are delivering the hit. Totally different mentality and approach. At QB....you make a play and hope the other guys did their job to prevent you from getting hit.

NOT suggesting he can play another spot, but it's unfair to say he can't based on that.

  • Good for Rob. He may stink on ice, but he seems like a good kid. I hope he enjoys his last couple years at PSU and gets his degree.

So you say all that garbage and then say you agree with me he can't play another position. If you don't like contact, you don't like contact plain and simple.

Take his redshirt, try and learn from BOB and Fish and maybe he gets a chance down the road, the physical tools have always been there, he just has a lot of learning to do about the position. (acknowledging the understatement)

Either way, he seems to be a pretty good kid and glad he will get a good degree rather than chasing a football dream that will end after college.

I agree 100%, if he is staying, take the redshirt and work your arse off and see what happens. If he doesnt go this route, he'll regret it...cause he is not playing another position.

  • Here is the way I see it (I'm for Bolden staying, and red shirting him).

QB Situation: (from what I gather to be accurate)

    Seniors: McGloin, McGregor
    Juniors: Bolden
    Sophmores: Jones
    Freshman: Bench

    Q1: McGloin/Jones
    Q2: McGloin/Jones
    Q3: McGregor
    Redshirts: Bolden/Bench

    After this season:

    Juniors: Bolden/Jones
    Freshman: Bench/Hackenberg

That is how our QB depth looks right now. If you redshirt Bolden this season, it gives him more time to get his confidence back (which we all agree he has an issue with). It also gives him another year to learn BOBs playbook. It is clear that Bolden shouldn't be the starter this year, and probably not the back-up, but give him the time to adjust and he could be a good back-up for next year at the least.

If the QB situation get dire, McGloin/Jones get injured for the entire season, burn Boldens red shirt.

Hardly. I didn't agree AT ALL with you saying he can't play another position. I said I'm not saying he can, but that I would not base it because he doesn't take a hit well as a QB.

As I said, which you obviously can't understand, is that liking contact as a QB who is trying to make a throw or pick up a few yards on a scramble is A LOT different than liking it when it IS part of your game and your position. If you are in a position that requires contact on every play, then you are mentally prepared for it each play and willing to get your uniform dirty every play. Playing safety where your main job is to hit someone is a lot different than playing QB where that is about 100th on the list of job requirements.

  • Rob's seems to come from a fairly bright family, unless they're like one of the dilusional families on American Idol, they can probably see through the rose colored glasses that he ain't going pro. So at that point, do you transer to some directional FCS school just to play football, or do you take a paid degree from PSU?

Bingo!!! Was thinking the same thing this whole thread. We keep thinking about this in terms of what's best for PSU football and Rob Boldens figure in football. At the end of the day, what's best for his future is the most important thing.

  • I hope he stays, he needs to learn a lot, BOB can help this kid. He is apart of the Penn state family, that means something to me... he wasn't very good last year, let the coaches teach him how to play... I wish the best for this young man, he is a Penn stater, and if if stays, that would show class and loyalty...

So the kid doesn't pan out, lets just toss him on the scrap heap and get him out as fast as we can rather than trying to coach and develop him??? I get what you are saying about scholarships but that sounds more like the UM way than PSU. You can't have convictions just when it is convienient. The kids stays we should do everything we can to develop him. Don't push kids out the door to free up a scholarship.

And as far as the red shirt goes, it would have been better for him to take it his first year and develop a little more, instead we needed him he tried to step up but fell down. If trying to help him get back up means a red shirt then give it to him.

One of theings that makes PSU football what it is, is that the players matter, they are not and should not be just numbers.

    IMHO.

Maybe, I loved Bolden and thought he should redshirt., But he didn't. The best thing for him to do now id move on. It would help us and help him. If he stays it is because he found nowhere else he wanted to go go, or would take him. Period

Or he learned that he isn't going to play in the NFL and that getting a degree at Penn State for free just to practice with the team for two more years isn't that bad of a deal. No different than the career backup QB in the NFL. Doesn't get much better if that's all you want.

At the caravan tour BOB mentioned cutting down the reps for all 3 by naming to out front and then changed to simply a starter. By the looks of Bolden in the spring game and when summer sessions resumed with no Bolden in sight many felt this was the case.

the vibe i'm getting from most is that the KID is somehow at fault for all the assumptions..I get that he didn't play well in the BLUE WHITE game. but for PSU fans to be tossing this kid out the door is wrong
