Bolden: 'I see myself as the starter'

  • sneakypete said...

Thats because you would be looking at one incident and not the entire body of work.

For the record, when asked a similar question last year McGloins answer was that Bolden makes a great back up. Thats an arrogant answer. If McGloin simply said I feel like i'm the starter nobody would have said a word. Clearly you can see the difference

Pete, that whole "Bolden makes a great backup" thing is way overblown. First of all, it is questionable if it even happened. There was a tweet that he said it, and that is it. You can't find the quote from any reputable source.

As for Bolden, this isn't his first time talking like this. He also did so in the spring. Personally, I couldn't care less about the comment, but let's be honest... the reason why Bolden gets a pass is because people see his talent and put him on a pedestal. And really, since after the bowl game, MM has been more humble than Bolden if you look at all of their comments.

Well I know a reputable person who knows that quote happened.

I don't have a problem with this statement no matter who said it. I would also have a problem if Bolden made the same comment about McGloin. I think Bolden gets a pass if he says something because he doesn't carry himself in the same way McGloin does.

He should talk less, the 2nd half against OSU, the MSU game and,the Gator Bowl should humble him and bring him back down to earth.

If you compare both kids actions its clear why one is called cocky/arrogant an a the other might get a pass if every now and then he says something.

Dinardo thought the OL last year was good, and that Dukes was going to be a major factor.

Wow...and nobody on this site or others blew up certain kids that didn't quite pan out now...did they? Funny how some don't like Dinardo saying that...almost comical how PSU "fans" see both kids looking ok as a bad thing. Make sure you have that line in the sand with a 1 or 11 I guess. Dinardo also said Bolden looked great last year and may start. He also talked about Redd. Had he talked down McGloin...a few here wouldn't be so fast to try and discredit the man. Windows are not hard to see through.

  • Just for full disclosure, I was waiting around to get Bolden and McGloin as time wound down so I could get a more personal interview with each, and I ended up only getting Bolden before they ended the session. I went to him first because there was only one other person there at the time.

  • They were NOT asked the same question. The story is, McGloin is at a sporting event at his local HS, and someone comes up to him and says that Bolden's father, a man in his 40's just told the world something to the effect that his son should never have had his job taken from him and given to a 'third stringer.' He was then asked what he thought about Bolden's potential transfer. This is AFTER the season - when McGloin EARNED the starting job for half of it. At that point, McGloin was no more a walk-on third stringer than Clark was at any point in the 2008 season. Bolden was, however, a backup. McGloin's response was 'if he left it would be too bad, because he was a good backup to have.' Yes, it was a BIT of a dig in response to the complete disrepsect he was shown by a man over twice his age. Yes, McGloin could have and maybe should have been the bigger man - than Bolden's father - but the idea that this exchange demonstrates any sort of character flaw in McGloin is complete fallacy.

All I am saying is that the "Bolden would be a good backup" quote didn't come from an interview. If he said it, it was in an informal setting (presumably at a high school basketball game). Are we going to kill kids for not being PC in that kind of situation? Personally, I think this whole thing is a joke. The fake outrage that people have with MM is one of the biggest BS things that has happened on PSU message boards over the past year. It just like his supposed comment to HIS FATHER that "nobody beats me out" and the crap he took for it. I mean, seriously... I don't know why people are so sensitive.

The only thing MM and Bolden have to do is be respectful in public interviews, and the both have been. I don't think that saying something like "I see myself as the starter" is bad. I like it. It's not disrespectful at all to the other guy, IMO.

People just need to chill out over things that 18-22 year old kids say. I mean geez... I was an idiot on several occations in college... it a fun and crazy time, don't take some of their words so seriously.

  • Both kids are young and both kids need to grow up. The microscope some people put on them because they cheer for a number is pretty disturbing. Neither kid is doing anything wrong other than working hard and trying to play footall while working towards a degree. Take a step back once in a while and look at the big picture.

  • I have no problem with confidence that he can win the job. I have a problem with what appears to be a lack of commitment to PSU. It's enough to make me root for the guy who is committed to PSU - which is what I'm ultimately a fan of.

To use the media...he has to initiate it, IMO. He did not ask a reporter to ask him if his dad micro-manages him. Seriously...if you had a reporter asking you a question like that, basically ripping your dad apart...would be all forthcoming with "oh yeah....I love Penn State..I'm here to stay....is that the answer you want?"

I'd give the cold shoulder too if someone was asking me that a few weeks before game 1...when I've been to every camp and training and workout the past 8 months.

It was a poor question, no doubt. But, anyone with half a brain would know that it was likely that a question would be asked regarding his status. It's not hard to forsee that coming and formulate an answer that would put pressure on the staff.

Again, as I said earlier, I don't think that was his intentions, but it is a possibility.

  • For the record, when asked a similar question last year McGloins answer was that Bolden makes a great back up. Thats an arrogant answer.

That is exactly the difference between the two answers. That being said I still love McGloin's confidence and even arrogance but he simple does not have the arm to make the throws against the really good defenses. I am not sure how anyone could have watched the Florida game (or second half O$U) and not seen that about McGloin.

If Penn State wants to get more than seven wins it will ONLY be with Bolden. If Bolden does not develop (which is very possible with Jay at the helm) then this team is going nowhere fast even with a potentially fierce Defense and Curt Warner 2.0 in the backfield.
