Bolden: 'I see myself as the starter'

  • Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden has high hopes for the 2011 season, but first he must secure the starting job for the Nittany Lions.

  • That's quite a choice for camera lines. McGloin is over Bolden's shoulder. Its great to hear that Bolden added 12 pounds. We'll be witnessing a great maturation process in front of over 100,000 fans 7 times this year. Think back to your lives at his age. Classes, family, playbook, practice, media, social. What a load to undertake.

  • Doesn't sound like a guy committed to the program to me - it sounds like he's committed to being the starter either here or elsewhere. Can't say I'm a fan of that attitude - I'll support him if he wins but until then I'm rooting for McGloin, who's PSU through and through.

Would you prefer he was honest and said "If Joe and Jay jerk me around again you can have McGloin, I'll go somewhere that I'm appreciated."? I'll take his attempts at dodging the question with an "I'm here and I expect to be the started".

  • I would not say he sounds thrilled to be in this situation....

I hope the best guy wins and takes us places.

  • Maybe he's just tired of dealing with those questions. He's been to all workouts since January...done everything asked apparently. Yet questions are still there.

    Just throwing that out there.

Would certainly suck if he was just taking it one practice at a time. But I'm sure he's a little cautious about how things will be handled based on last year. Hard not to be. Get thrown to the wolves early....get injured, and not have a shot to fight through it.

  • I'm sure he is tired of dealing with those questions. However, when someone creates a situation where they have gone 7 months now without making a final decision on whether they will transfer or not, they can expect those questions and deserve them.

I'm a fan of the best player playing and the player shutting up and dealing with that, especially when they are sophmores. I think it is a different situation when you are an upperclassman, you elegibility is running out, and you are unable to earn a shot at a particular school.

I also feel like the Bolden's must have been given some insider information about Newsome's lack of progress during the recruitment because it certainly doesn't seem like Rob would be willing to sit for a few years behind a more experienced guy.

Bingo... good lord not Sean, but the other guys were just hounding him trying to get him to say something. I mean give the kid a break. I wouldn't want a kid that doesn't think he should be the starter. Saw nothing wrong with anything he said at all.

  • Last year he was a frosh and timid...I'm more encouraged by him stepping up. Dinardo just posted that both looked about the same. Weird...how is it someone who is there and was a coach isn't picking a number and running with it? I think Rob wins the job, but to many have gone overboard on the McGloin hatorade for a year now.

  • I think back to an interview with M-Rob and how he and Joe didnt get along in the beginning. Joe told him that someday he'd be a household name around state college. He listened, worked hard, and now he is. I could see Bolden maturing into that guy. I hope he trusts the program and stays...I really think he is our future at QB. Its gotta help that PJ is seemingly out of the picture too. Im comfortable with McPick as number 2.

Maybe he has already committed to his team and his father and family decided to not give the media anything to work with. Especially the way his dad, and him, were portrayed by some 7 months ago.

Both looked the same, how? Both are not the same in any way shape or form. So what does he mean by it?

Those are legit questions I'm asking....not trying to be an arce.

Look for yourself. May be a bit over the top, but he's right about the DL depth and a few other things. OL comments must be too good to be true.

    Compliments of Twitter:

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Practice - there are 3 football facilities that stand out in the B1G - PSU, OSU and Nebraska

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Practice - some of the younger guys that looked good today - Belton, Amos, Robinson, Barnes -as always good young talent

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Prac - love the fact that Joe has said he & coaches have to do a better job & the players have to get tougher. Message embraced by both

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Prac - Defense solid. LB - good depth - SEC- better depth than recent years and good young talent. Defensive line depth biggest question

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Practice -QB position - from what I've seen which is not much but more than most other than the coaches - I could not separate the two

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Prac- D.Moye working like crazy @ practice. WR talented young players. If they can run the ball, be efficient @ QB they'll use WR talent

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Prac - Silas Redd-wow- if he can continue to prac like today, maintain focus & be one of the toughest guys in B1G he'll have a great yr.

    gerrydinardo Gerry DiNardo
PSU Prac - The offensive line is the biggest issue not the QB and the offensive line is much improved. This is a good football team.

Well he did say..."which is not much."

We'll see what happens. There are conflicting reports all around. Some say Bolden is clearly ahead while others say it's even. None have said MM has an edge. So does the truth lie somewhere in the middle?

    md154

  • I'm not a huge fan of DiNardo, but the last time he said that we were a good team in preseason practice was in 2008. We are going to be better than many people think, IMO.

Sean stated the other day MM had a good scrimmage and Rob has been rumored to look good at times as well. This HUGE gap really doesn't exist at the level you think it does IMO. Dinardo raved all last year during his practice visit how great Rob looked....so I'm assuming he's saying both look good. That is a good thing.

  • The worst part of the interview is someone rambling about his father asking a 25 second question. The guy basically calls his father out, asks if he has to "talk him off the ledge" hahaha, does he micro manage you? What kind of question is that? How do you expect him to answer? I thought he handled the very poor question pretty well.

  • Really happy to hear that Amos is playing well (or at least in this practice). He's going to be an important player next year and I wouldn't mind seeing him get some time this year with DT in the doghouse.

  • Everyone is making this a bigger deal than i think it is...i would be a lot more dissappointed if bolden would have come out and said that he didn't expect himself to be the starter. Then, maybe, i would be a little more concerned.

I respect Sean and his sources. I'm just saying I've heard that RB has had an edge since spring. You can take that for what it's worth. I'm just saying, without picking sides, that I've yet to hear MM has had an edge, other than a good scrimmage. I remember the DC/PD battle and how it was supposedly close. When in reality, I think it was DC always on their mind.

  • If DiNardo thinks they look even then I think that explains why he is no longer coaching.

Dinardo thought the OL last year was good, and that Dukes was going to be a major factor.

I agree with everything you said here. If McGloin made the same comments this would be a 50 post thread centering on how arrogant and what a punk Matt is. I don't have a problem with either of them thinking they should be the starter. In fact, I prefer they both feel that way.

Thats because you would be looking at one incident and not the entire body of work.

For the record, when asked a similar question last year McGloins answer was that Bolden makes a great back up. Thats an arrogant answer. If McGloin simply said I feel like i'm the starter nobody would have said a word. Clearly you can see the difference
