Bob Costas to be on Kevin Slaten show on Tues, Mar 5th

    You guys that think that Bob Costas owes going to a larger media and discuss his feelings on the Sandusky situation are crazy, to put nicely.

    He said what he had to say, that's that. If it comes up in another conversation, tv show, radio, you know how he stands now. But to think he now needs to discuss this and "apologize" for his quick initial reaction is just silly.

    I'm certainly not holding my breath that he'll go on a tour around the country saying he misspoke at first, but if he wants to hold himself as a higher power when he made his statements about Penn State shortly after the Freeh report than he should do the same now. Will he? Doubtful. But going on Slaten's show is a step in the right direction, albeit a small step.

    Didn't say that I thought he would do it, but I would like him to. I think that the mainstream media by and large is crap. But you have a few, like Bilas, Maisel, Van Natta, that have been outspoken and have done their part to change the narrative. If Costas is as good a man as advertised, I think he could speak a few more times on the subject. He is a busy man, but I think that where he has the opportunity to do so, he will.

    The Q is, how vocal will Costas be about this... After he admitted he was totally wrong? IMO he should go out and talk about how he feels now that he is knowledgable about it... That is the only way that he can make up for his past mistake. It's cute that he acknowledges the error in his past judgment, but it means absolutely nothing if he can't reach the masses with his new found knowledge and truth. There is a lot of harm that he and others like him did, and there is much to be done to reverse it, or even make a dent in the damage... JMO though

    You are right about that. With that said, at least he was willing to take another look at it and state where he was wrong. On the other hand those on the BOT, who are supposed to defend the University, did the exact same thing but refused to admit they were wrong.banghead

    I work for a company that went through the media wringer unjustly and have yet to hear anyone in the media say they were wrong after we were vindicated.

    THIS will be no different. A positive court ruling trumps all the blowhards, puts them in backpedal mode, and puts PSU in a position where it rightfully belongs.

  • My concern is where has he been? He read the reports awhile ago and has yet to espouse his NEW position in a national venue, nor will he most likely. We can only hope because this guy could do a lot to repair the damage he helped build.

  • He is not going to promote our cause no doubt. However, it is positive to have some mainstream media people change their tunes. If more and more of them do maybe the narrative will slowly change.

    But we have more allies on the sanctions side of things. In reality they are all that matter. What OSU, WVU, Rutgers, ND, etc... fans or non-sport fan elitists think of us doesn't matter. They will always be happy the great Joe Paterno was disgraced and/or football was to blame.

    So completely agree. It used to be that Golic was this annoying voice that I would hear off and on but I could deal with it. Anymore, he just sounds ridiculous and it doesnt matter what topic he is discussing, PSU or other. I just never seem to agree with him and he just gets loud. Quite annoying.

    I have XM radio. Anyone have good suggestions for morning shows?

    Yeah, that's just not true. While I don't like the way he ranted on SNF, he's still one of the most respected people in sports media.

    He blamed his Olympics requirements and a low-level staffer at the Today Show for his original support of the Freeh Report.

    Still thinks Paterno should have seen something more due to his sharpness and status. He, however, thinks that Freeh's assertions are based in insufficient evidence to think Joe was involved in a coverup. He compared the Freeh report to doing a study on the Patriots and not talking to the coaches, players or owner and instead interview the bus driver.

    How about Costas blames himself for simply doing a poor job of journalism without getting the facts, instead of the Olympics and staffers?? Nobody asked Costas for his opinion on the PSU matter, nor is he in some position where he couldn't simply say, "I need to read the report before concluding."

    Not defending Costas, because I think that he committed a horrible act of Journalism in regard to his original statement. However, he was brought on the Today show with the intent of him discussing the issue with Lauer.

    I agree that if I was in the field, before I gave my opinion on something of such gravity that I would decline until I had the opportunity to read/digest all available information, but its the horrible twisted nature of our 24 hour news cycle.

    I write for my organizations weekly digest and I refuse to make claims that I can not support until I have information to support it.

Right now its all about hoops so I find myself going other places till April. But once basketball ends, its all about college football and recruiting.

    Because a quick google search can tell you there were plenty of people who said he wasn't after his rant.

I'm sure plenty of people lost respect for him. He made a mistake, it was not the proper forum for his comments, and he admitted to that.

    Every show he goes on these days, the people speaking with him always mention "admiring" Costas or the "respect" they have for him. Please, listen to his recent national interviews (not on news stations, but on sports stations, which is the "sports media" that I specifically mentioned in my post) and see that people say great things about him. Listen to Greeny gush over him at the beginning of this interview from a few weeks ago (linked below). He's still very well respected in sports. Sure that's an opinion, and it's no more or less valid than yours, but I am very confident that if you polled sports people they would say he's well respected and not "losing his mind."

    And here at the 11 minute mark of a different interview saying "I can't imagine that there's a bigger sportscaster in the world."

    Agreed. The people who really spoke out against him were the people that disagreed with his point politically. Others thought maybe he should have chosen a different time to speak out, but that's all.

    I wasnt calling you out personally. Just a general post.

    Not trying to beat this into the ground but I dont understand why you think Costas should speak a few more times on the subject. Are you just wishing that he would to help our cause or do you think that he owes us that?

    I wish he would speak out too. That would be great. But if he doesn't that's his choice too. He isn't an ambassador for PSU. Just a guy with an opinion.

    You're right though, if he is given the opportunity, I think he will give his opinion on the situation, and we know now that it is on the side of PSU.
