Bob Costas to be on Kevin Slaten show on Tues, Mar 5th

  • 5pm EST start on KQQZ from St. Louis. For those that don't know, Slaten read the Freeh report just after it was released and exposed it on air for the sham that it is, repeatedly.

    11:15PM 05 March 2013 EDIT: Here's a link to the interview audio: https://soundcloud.com/fortyeight-fourteen/costas-on-slaten

  • I will be on a bus coming home from VA. If you (or someone) could either recap and possible provide a link to the archives would be very appreciated.

FWIW, costas and slaten are old buddies if i recall.

As much as I dislike Costas getting him involved with this would be big.

Really, I don't remember this. Slaten actually spoke out against the Freeh report? I'll have to research more. I like anyone who speaks out.

Do we have any reason to think the show today will include anything about us?

  • I know Costa's was shouting for the death penalty. But, didn't he come out and say he waited to read the Freeh report in it's entirety and had doubts about the report. I can't find the link anywhere so hoping someone else can link it up. Costa's is no way a friend to PSU, however if he see's momentum that can benefit him and get clicks he is going to run with it.

On his old show, he did many shows and spent many hours on defending Penn State. He has a new employer now, so we will see, but I would be pretty sure it is discussed.

Every single day he was on trashing the Freeh report and I would be surprised if he didn't bring it up.

Yes. Slate had many national sportswriters on his show. When they would go on anti-PSU or anti-Paterno rants he would forcefully point out their in accurate statements and claims. He saw through the Freeh report and publicly screamed so before it was en vogue.

  • I have listened to Kevin Slaten just about every day and I'm glad he's back on the air.

Right after the Freeh Report was released Bob Costas slammed Penn State and was calling for the death penalty. On the other hand Kevin Slaten (no ties to Penn State) who is a former attorney immediately saw the Freeh Report for the failure it is. Slaten strongly defended Penn State to those who called into his show attacking the university. The most hilarious show was when Congress woman Sara Lampe called in. Kevin called her out on every one of her comments and proved she was reacting without having read the entire Freeh Report.

Here is that show......WELL WORTH HEARING

Meanwhile during the Olympics Bob Costas admitted he hadn't read the entire Freeh Report, only the summery. Kevin and Bob are friends so Kevin called Bob and invited him to be on his show. Bob said he would AFTER he read the whole report. In the following weeks after that Bob told Kevin he had started to read the report and believes it to be very misleading and full of assumptions.

I assume now that Bob has read the entire report and is ready to talk about it. IMHO this is HUGE, if we can get Bob Costas to go on TV and do a show about the failings of the Freeh Report it will do a lot of good for us "Truth Seekers"

  • I guess having Costas calling out the Freeh report would be helpful. Just sucks to be him as he is part the of media problem. If I remember correctly, I believe after the Sandusky interview aired, NBC had him on. He said something along the lines of "it is clear that Joe Paterno was part of a cover up."

Damn, he must pull in a lot of listeners.

Would love to see what that weasel Giger is making? $30,000 combined radio station I cant find/terrible newspaper?

  • I hope Bob Costas had a chance to read the Paterno Report, and it would be outstanding if he head Blehar's latest report.

Couldnt agree with you more. Should be a very tiny town high school newspaper editor, but even that is giving him to much credit.

I just listened again. She is a complete moron. What a joke journalism has become today. Northwestern must be proud of the product their journalism school puts out. How about some journalistic curiosity.

Just listened to this for the first time. WOW!!!! First I love Kevin Slaten!! Second, the Sara Lampe's of the world are what we're up against. They are the people that caused this mess BOT, NCAA, Corbett...

I think Corbett's involvement is getting lost in this discussion. Yes, he is suing the NCAA BUT it was Linda Kelly who grandstanded in a press conference basically equating Curley and Schultz with Sandusky. She's the one that called out the administrators. Corbett suggested hiring Freeh. Freeh's presser then was just a regurgitation of Linda Kelly's.

Sandusky is the real reason we're in this mess but Corbett is right behind him.

I live in altoona and have some friends that work at forever broadcasting. They tell me Giger doesn't make anything doing the radio program. Edit: He actually does do it for free. The only reason he does it is to "expand his brand". Well it's not working. And I haven't listened to his show in months. Terrible terrible radio.

He was at a Sheetz golf outing I played in at Iron Masters. At first I thought they teamed us up together in a foursome and I was sick on my stomach but when I realized he wasn't I wanted to lay into him for some of his comments. My partners talked be out of it (wrong place to do it).

Costas has been changing his tune for a while now. That doesn't excuse his initial outburst, but I wouldn't be surprised if he agrees with Slaten more than people expect. Can't wait to hear a report from someone after the show.

Slaten has two interview modes; people he respects and people he disrespects. When he interviews an old timer in baseball or a broadcasting legend, his entire voice and tone changes to be kindly and encouraging. We've heard the disrespect tone above.

Slaten & Costas know each other and I would be entirely shocked if this entire interview isn't planned out. That is a GREAT thing for PSU.

Costas is such a huge name in the business, I don't think he would agree to be hammered by Slaten on Paterno. I'm willing to bet this return to radio is a very big "I told you so" by Slaten and Costas agreeing to many of the Freeh report critiques; with Costas even acknowledging Kevin was out in front on so many of the points. Kevin's been out of a job for a while due to the racial comment and this return to StL broadcasting should be his grand entrance moment.

I may be wrong, but I really expect a positive interview on the Paterno narrative.

    Grue

  • I agree Grue. Slaten had been talking about getting Costas to read the full report and come on his show to discuss it. That was all before he got fired so I kind of pushed it off my radar. The fact that it's one of the first interviews he's going forward with just weeks into his new gig has me hopeful. Costas and Slaten are friends according to Slaten, I'm not sure how close, but there is absolutely a mutual respect there. I'm pretty sure Costas and Slaten have been working on making this happen for some time so it should be interesting.

Costas also hates ESPN and defected to NBC Sports, right?
