Bill O'Brien press conference updates...

  • It was fun. There's some things you can really learn from this. We'll meet as a staff and talk about the glitches. It wasn't perfect and we can really learn from it. It was good to get the feel of how a game will be run in our leadership.

  • Feel pretty good about the quarterbacks, have to watch the film. All three guys have made plays, we've asked a lot of them. It takes time. Different guys learn at different rates. We have to let it soak and them make a decision headed into training camp on who we're going with or who the top two are.

  • This is a great place. I was excited, I wish the weather was a little better but I can't control that. It was a neat experience. It was fun to run out there with that team.

Bring it up, break it down and take it into the locker room.

  • I have to go back and talk about some things as a staff. I think the scoring went well. There's a bunch of points on the scoreboard. I wanted to reward the defense. It's ahead of the offense right now, that's to be expected. I'm not saying it's the most exciting game in the world, but I said it wouldn't be. I think it was a great day for Penn State football.

  • You saw about 10 percent of the offense today.

  • Been really happy with Bill Belton. He's a smart guy, a quiet guy who works. When they moved him, he's picked up a little more. He's got to take better care of the football. That's something we'll talk to him about. He's had a good spring and we're happy with that position switch.

About 9 percent more than what we saw last season.

  • We have a good group of tight ends. We'll have to look at that. Passes were completed all over the place. We're still evaluating this team and see who we should be spreading the ball to. Hopefully that will be balanced.

    There was offense last year?

  • Pocket awareness is big in evaluating quarterbacks. We talk about a lot of things, young quarterbacks don't always get that. I thought it got a little better today. All three of those guys I saw climbing the pocket and stepping up and making a good throw. I was happy how they did that at times.

  • We've got a big team, a physical team, at certain spots we have speed. We'll evaluate that going out. We'll go out and play some games next year and see how we match up.

There was a guy, I think his number was 25, who ran around a little bit but that's all I remember.

  • Charlie Fisher did a great job today. We talked about how the reps were. If I'm going to stand up and talk about being fair and honest, I need to get those guys balanced reps. It believe it was fairly balanced. We'll be able to have an understanding of how they played.

  • I've learned many, many things. I've met so many people, I wouldn't be able to pick out one thing. They just talk about what a special place this is and what it means to so many people. I know this is the place that I'm very proud to be the head football coach here. The program is a part of a great athletic department and a special University.

  • I feel very good about our front seven on defense. Jordan Hill is one of the better tackles that I've been around. I feel good about our linebackers with Mike Mauti coming back.

We had to make some moves over in the secondary to get numbers there. Stephon Morris has had a great spring, Malcolm Willis, too. It's not he deepest position on the team, but people can play some football.

  • The communication factor is a big part of it. I wish we would have done this one more time this spring. A lot of us have worked together. You get on the headset and you know what one guy is looking for. It's like rising a bike. We'll get in here during camp for one or two more scrimmages.

You're right now that I think about it. I thought it was the game you play as a kid where the best athlete on the playground runs around and everyone else tries to catch him.

  • We a rough last couple of days. TJ Rhattigan had a knee. James Van Fleet, knee in practice. He's a great kid. You hate to lose everybody. We met with the parents here this morning about the violence of the sport. I'm confident in our medical team.

  • Paul Jones has gotten better every single day. We have a unique relationship because of his sense of humor. He made a lot of strides this spring, he's doing better in school and I really enjoy being around Paul Jones.

    That's it for the presser.

That's a bummer. I think he was the one that was so excited about starting.

It really does suck, a couple of really hard working walkons get there shot to play and then blow a knee. Really sux for Van Fleet as I think it is his last year and I had thought someone had said he was done for the year. I think TJ has years left.

Very interesting comment. In a good way.

His play at the end was impressive. The shovel pass showed nice field awareness.

My favorite part of the whole game was that play where he scrambled for at least 10 seconds and finally found an open man downfield, and right after he completed the pass he runs over and smacks BOB in the @$$.

This really does suck, but not sure if this was BOB's exact quote or Sean's take. I got a little glimpse of JoePa there with someone having "a knee" that made me smile. But not to make light of the injury in any way, I feel bad for TJ.
