Bill O'Brien postgame updates -- Indiana

  • I highly doubt he'll go anywhere. But he's just like the players, he'll field some calls and he has to take the best deal for him. This job is lightyears different from the one he accepted.

    MTayl72

  • Hopefully he is just trying to be vague in hopes that he can get PSU to give him a raise.

I agree, I honestly feel like no one in the PSU admin ever thought that PSU would be sanctioned by the NCAA and they conveyed that to BOB. BOB knows that winning is everything and maybe he feels like it will hurt his future job opportunities if he sticks around at PSU and loses a bunch of games. I'm hopeful he stays but you never know what could happen. If some billionaire NFL owner wants him bad enough there's no way to say that he def. would stay.

or maybe he just wants those idiotic media blowhards to keep pumping the story so PSU remains mainstream 12 months a year...just saying....he seems like a smart guy, the more attention he gets the better!

Of course I hope he stays but could you imagine working for his bosses?

  • BOB earned a raise this year regardless of anything else. He should be around 3.5 per, IMO. If we want to survive this, we need to be willing to spend money. That includes facility upgrades, stadium upgrades, pump money into the staff, etc.

Not sure it'll happen. Don't trust our current brass to do the right/smart thing. But I agree with your post completely.

  • Even if he wanted to leave, which I doubt is the case, there's the little issue of his buyout. Any school, or NFL team for that matter, willing to pay that for a still somewhat unproven coach is absurd.

I still think it's less absurd then paying an unproven assistant coach.

Good points, but where would the money come from? Attendance is way down and we're paying $12 mil/yr in fines until 2016. I think we have made financial leaps in staff pay and facilities in the past 12 months. Once the new scoreboards go in, the Press Box is the only major stadium deal IMO...and thats not a program changer. Not sure what Lasch facilities remain to significantly improve. I'd lean toward staff compensation being our wisest 'investment' during the next few years.

Its like they say, when business or the economy is bad -- strategic marketing becomes really important and to not neglect it.

It sort of fits in that we need to keep paying for what works (our coaching staff), and fix the things that dont work (whatever upgrades need to be done). We do this, we come out looking much better.

Lots of crucial decision the next 10 years or so and I am not confident in our BOT to make them.

Well if MD and Rutgers join the B1G I imagine that the per school payout will get a nice bump. This would help solve alot of PSU's financial concerns.

  • After the media has had a field day tearing PSU apart, why is he going to give them anything? All that matters is what he says to those boys in the locker room. I bet they know the answer.

    Flipper10

  • He's well schooled in Belichick-speak. He speaks but says little. I'm not going to read much into it.

He will be unable to recruit successfully if he gives the same reply to recruits. They are recruiting aggressively, so I don't believe he's jerking any of them around. At some level you have to feel he has loyalty to a guy like Breneman and the other EE's ... as well as Hackenberg.

    ZZamatev

  • He seems to be getting pretty chippy with the media nowadays. He snapped at guys a few times today.

  • Few reasons why I think obrien stays at least next year, and also why I'd be extremely disappointed if he left.

After getting hired, he stressed loyalty and "seeing things through" in ref to coaching with the pats while psu commits were wavering

When sanctions were handed down, he sold the team on why it was important to stay and that the easy way out isn't always the best route.

Always talks about how the kids on the team are special and how academics and graduating players are a big deal to him and psu being one of the few schools that value that more than wins

if he takes his own advice, he'll be back for a few years and hopefully give his best shot when the sanctions are levied. The nfl will always be there and I'm not sure there are many schools he'd want to coach at over psu.

    Good points.

NFL has practically zero loyalty outside of organizations like the Pats/Steelers. Does he want to be secure for a long while and make money (he better get raised to 3m+), or go to the NFL to prob. some crappy team that will take 2-3 years to get on the right track? He is an aggressive guy, so I am not sure.

I dont believe BOB is going to leave for a small market NFL team. I think if he leaves it will be for a big market NFL team in a few years.

You can't just stay complacent. This isn't the job he signed up for, who can blame him for leaving if he does?

That said, I doubt he does.

    MTayl72

  • Yikes maybe he will look around what a shame that would be. Maybe he came in not realizing any sanctions and he wont want to see it through these sanctions. I dont think this will end well.

What are you talking about guy? There was a clause in his contract to extend in the event of sanctions...how wasn't this the job he signed up for? That aside, it would be a punk move to convince kids to stay and recruits like Hack to come and then bail. Actually, punk move is an understatement...but I think he is a high character guy and is refusing to address the question as a calculated move for positive PR / contract leverage / etc. reasons. All things considered, if he left after this year, I'd have more respect (by a long shot) for Lane Kiffin.

That clause was in there if they got sanctioned he would be guaranteed to get paid for twice the years in case they fired him for not being able to win under sanctions. There was a reason that big buyout didn't go the length of the extension as well.

These sanctions, the harshest since the death penalty to SMU, were not what he was expecting to say the least.
