Bill King Show This Morning

  • Jerry DeNardo was a guest on show this morning. Apparently DeNardo had meetings with the new coaches in Big Ten for an upcoming showing on the Big Ten Network. Just heard the portion of Bill King's show dealing with his meeting with BOB which took place yesterday. He indicated that he had a very good meeting with BOB. DeNardo said he focused on whether BOB would have any restrictions set by the University as Head Coach or have free reigns to run the program. He said it looks like BOB will have free reigns which DeNardo felt was good. Asked BOB about PSU traditions - what will change and what will not change. Uniforms the same, he was not sure about buses to the game and quarterback the first off the bus - had not yet made this decision. King asked about coaches retained on staff - DeNardo indicated two coaches retained, Johnson and Vandy, are both great recruiters and coaches. The conversation was then shiofting to Urban Meyer when I arrived at work so I'm not sure if they went back to Penn State at all.

Yea, the full interview should be on BTN next week.

I truly hope he keeps the buses and the QB tradition. I just think that those types of traditions should not be messed with.

Agree Lion. If getting off a bus and walking thru a sea of fans onto Paterno Field on gameday doesnt get the players fired up, then I don't know what will.

Personally I think it is a way to quickly start losing fan support. Rich Rodriquez tried to change traditions at UM when he went there and it did nothing for him. I think there are definitely things that a new coach can do to put his stamp on the program, but a gameday tradition like the player busses is just something that should stay. Just my opinion.

If we win, the fans will rally around new traditions. If we lose (particularly if the team is not competitive), then fans will nitpick at tradition changes.

How about walking from Lasch to Beaver Stadium through campus and the Bryce Jordan Center.......? I could see a tunnel of people all the way into BJC and then a five minute explosion in the BJC followed by a march through a tunnel of people to Beaver Stadium.......

(They could also sign up for a credit card and get a free hat along the way......sarcasm

RichRod made changes that every fan could recognise, like, IIRC, not reserving jersey #1 for the #1 WR.

The number of fans waiting for the kids to get off the buses is minuscule compared to the entire fanbase. That is one tradition that IMO would have no impact on the vast majority of fans.

Heard the tail end this morning as well (and the follow-on Meyer love fest which culminated in how Hoke/Meyer will equal the Schembeckler/Hayes rivalry and last 10+ years)... DiNardo mentioned all the YouTube videos being put out by the program, and specifically the workout videos. He made it a point to stress how different it is under Fitz2, and he told King to check them out.

Apparently, the videos will be also be posted on the BTN.

I agree with this. I for one do not care about bus or no bus. What if they walked to the Stadium and dressed there? Does it really matter? If what Coach does wins, everyone will say they had been in favor of the change for years now and do not know why Joe did not change it......If there are losses, then it will be the changes made that are to blame......

  • I love the blue buses too, but a part of me wonders if their last ride should be Joe's funeral procession. Since they were used by the family in the funeral, maybe the team rolling up to the stadium in them is not appropriate.

  • The buses should stay IMO. BO'B is an intelligent man. He'll make the right call on this and the other long standing protocols and traditions.
