Big day for Beh

Scranton (Pa.) Prep two-way lineman Noah Beh went to Penn State on Saturday for the Nittany Lions' Junior Day, but he wasn't sure where he stood on the Nittany Lions board.

Crazy that several other staffs are recruiting him as an OL. I can't believe they don't take newera's deep analysis seriously.

I know that he could very likely put on a "good" 60 pounds, but I always find it interesting (and not just as a cardiologist), that we, as fans, encourage it. In anyone other than linemen in football and sumo wrestlers, weighing anywhere near 300 pounds is considered a VERY bad thing. And even in these guys, it's definitely not good long term. Thoughts? Would love to hear what MTayl thinks.

He is young and has 3 years to put on this weight. This is not going to happen between now and the time he would arrive as a frosh....nor should it. He can also shirt a year while adding the right way. that is 2.5 years right there and he may not play until his RS soph year so that is close to 4 years. We are talking 15-20 pounds a year, not 60 in one shot.

Exactly! I don't know why everyone is so worried about it. He's probably 16-17 years old. Gilliam went from 262 to 297 in one year under Fitz. If BOB and the coaching staff think he is capable of adding the necessary weight needed to play OT then we should trust that. If not, then he is athletic enough to play TE or DE. Some people act like just because he was offered at one position that he HAS to play that position for the rest of his life no matter what.

I don't expect him to gain it all at once. My question was why should anyone think it's okay to put on that much weight period? I know a football recruiting site is not the place to ask these questions but weighing 300+/-pounds is not healthy for anyone for any period of time. I've had a couple of former linemen (college and pro) as patients recently and both (late 40's and early 60's) had all the complications you would expect from being that large. I just find it funny/strange that we ask these kids to do something we would never advise anyone else to do just to entertain us-and I'm not excluding myself in it.

Or, they have a vested interest in getting that large to achieve many of their ultimate goals of the NFL. Let's not act like we're doing these kids a huge disservice by giving them a scholarship to play football and go to a great university for free....all the while giving them a great chance to potentially make millions by playing a game.

  • Gents, he is a junior in high school. He has time to put on the weight and muscle. I'm sure, if he joins the fray, Fitz will do good things with him his redshirt season. This staff sees something in the kid and thinks he can play OL. That is good enough for me considering the way out OL developed over last season. This isn't McWhoter's first rodeo.

  • Given the discussion about weight with Beh, I found this article to be appropriate, especially this part:

"Our eyes deceive us sometimes," said one college coach with a laugh. "Lots of schools get scared off by how heavy a lineman is -- or isn't -- or why he doesn't have more offers or is only rated a two-star and they'd rather go for the big, heavy kid rather than a kid 40-50 pounds lighter who is 6-4 or 6-5 and has much better feet. A lot of times that (heavier, higher-ranked) kid may dominate just because he's mauls people in high school but what happens when he's got to play in space against much faster people?"

..."There is such a need for good foot quickness, balance and agility, and those things are very hard to find," said Jones, who apparently is a pretty shrewd evaluator/developer of talent.

Projecting OTs is a tricky business - CBSSports.com

A month after National Signing Day and this recruiting nugget caught my eye: the three highest-rated offensive tackles in this year's NFL draft were ranked as a 4-star (Luke Joeckel); a 2-star (Eric Fisher) and a 0-star out (Lane Johnson) coming out of high school.
