Barnes has big plans

Penn State defensive end Deion Barnes has enjoyed a breakout season but has designs on even better things in 2013.

  • I truly believe that he will be the most sought after player on the roster and will set the tone of guys staying or going.

  • Jeff, after you asked about schools contacting him, did you follow-up with questions about his intentions? I assume he didn't say anything since you didn't mention it.

    "I'm here to be great."

Where is "here"? shrug I'd guess he intends to stay at PSU. He's actually one of the guys I worry about the least, thanks to LJ Sr. He has such a good relationship with players and these kids know what he can do as a coach.

I personally don't think any starters leave, but the way the article read made me wonder.

This was on a conference call this morning (I should have mentioned that). I didn't ask him the question about other schools contacting him, but I know other schools have. He has mentioned, as have pretty much all the young guys this season, earlier this year that he plans to stay at Penn State. And today he said he's ready to come back and keep learning from Coach Johnson.

Bottom line: None of these guys are truly in the barn until next preseason camp, but if Barnes is planning on leaving, he doesn't sound like it at the moment.

Him, arob, and donovan smith will be the most heavily recruited next year.. i think they all stick around though, they all played such big roles this season they know they will be the faces of the program for years to come.. time will tell though.

    Throw Carter in there too.

  • Yawn, get over it guys.....nothing new here

  • It will be interesting to find out who the heaviest "recruiters" are. I'm sure we'll find out. Woe to any who show up in Beaver Stadium. I'd give them cause for a heavy police escort and I ain't talkin' trash on some message board.

  • Deion said before as long as Coach Johnson is here he will be here.

  • It isn't like any of the guys that left at the beginning of the season had a break out season at their new school. I would think that this would be in the back of the current player's minds. Why would our starters want to leave and risk playing time or being the featured player at their position? Especially when the "supa six" have proven to be such play makers and the staff has game planned around them. IMO the only reason they leave is to play in a bowl game. I don't see them leaving. Time will tell though.

  • I talked to Barnes and his dad quickly after a game earlier this year when he walked by our tailgate with his Papa Johns pizza after the game.

He and his dad were very big on Penn State and coach Johnson, I doubt he leaves...

I thought that schools couldnt' contact the scholarship athletes
That the athletes had to contact them.
    True?

  • I think the "Supa Six" (Barnes, Smith, Belton, Amos, Robinson, and Carter) are key to the program's future. So far all have said they plan to stick together and stay at PSU, and I believe them. I see them filling the same role as Mauti, Zordich, Hill, and Hodges in leading the charge to stick together.

I have no doubt that those players will be heavily recruited, but the players that we lost were lone wolves (Redd, Brown) or lost on the depth chart (Haplea, Fortt).
