BOB wants to resurrect the Pitt rivalry ...

  • “I would love to see that game played on an annual basis,” O’Brien told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in a story published Saturday. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for (Pitt coach) Paul Chryst and their program, and that’s a great rivalry.

Not sure I agree ... I remember the rivalry and it had some high points, but as a teenager in Pitt Stadium I was afraid for my life. Some real whacko's there as we all know.

State College, PA - Penn State Football: Nittany Lions Coach Would Like to Play Pitt on Annual Basis, Report Says

Penn State and Pitt are scheduled to resume their historic in-state football rivalry with a two-game series in 2016 and ’17. But if first-year Nittany Lions coach Bill O'Brien has his way, the teams will play more often than that – just like the old days.

I have the same fears for OSU games.

Look, rivalries are like that. You need to be careful, alert, and on your best behavior.

I really think this rivalry should be an annual event. It should happen every Thanksgiving weekend. COME ON OB, MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

  • Yessssss.

I want to kick their stupid .... oh boy. To put it more kindly, I want to play Pitt every year and show prospects around the state why they should never even consider attending the other school in Pennsylvania.

  • I'm all for it! Living it Pittsburgh, it will give me another chance to go to a PSU game and I would love to see Pitt fans fume that Heinz Field is more than 1/2 PSU fans!

  • When he said this at the Harrisburg event on Wednesday evening, it was greeted with lots of applause and cheers. I would love this.

  • Terrible idea if the schedule stays at 12 games - it restricts PSU's scheduling ability far too much for a "rivalry" that has lost most of its regional/national luster.

But it's actually a very good idea if the NCAA eventually goes to 13 games.

PSU needs to decide what is best for PSU.

  • It's not going to happen unless the NCAA allows for the 13th game.

    -9 in conference games
    -1 PAC-12 game
-The need for 7 home games

We would never see another quality OOC opponent again.

  • Honestly it wouldn't bother me if we didn't play any other quality OOC opponents but I know that the majority of people wouldn't like that. I don't think it has to be a yearly thing but I would like to play them maybe 4-5 times a decade. It was just a great rivalry that I hate to see it not played every couple of years.

I think the Big Ten never confirmed it would go to 9 conference games. I also think the Pac-12 scheduling agreement likely nixed those plans.

Pitt does next to nothing for us and serves as a big recruiting event for the Panthers every other year and helps them sell tickets. An annual Pitt series is a bad idea.

No recruit on the face of the earth would be induced to go to Pitt by seeing Heinz Field filled with Blue and White while Pitt proceeds to lose by 3 touchdowns to Penn State.

Your basing your opinion on what is convenient for you, and what satisfies your emotional wants.

I hope the decision makers base their decision on what is best for Penn State Football.

I didn't mean it like that. I meant that we would never see another quality OOC opponent outside of the PAC-12.

Are you suggesting Pitt is not a quality OOC opponent!

Do you want to be limited to Pitt and Pac 12 teams? If we are hell bent on trying to make inroads into Georgia and Florida, we should be trying to set up agreemnts with the likes of UGA and Miami.

Well, why would we need another Bama on the schedule when you have the Big10, Pac12 team, and Pitt. That sounds like enough to me.

That's why I said that it was was I wanted and that I knew the majority of people wouldn't want it! I understand the need to play teams from all over to increase exposure and keep different segments of the alumni/fan base happy. Just pointing out what my personal feelings are, but thanks for pointing out the obvious Captain Obvious!

Even without 9 conference games, the "need" to have 7 home games a year for money reasons pretty much knocks out having a set Home/Home OOC .

Beside the PAC-challenge (locked in as Home/Home) added to the 8 conference Home/Home leaves only three games for OOC.

Unless the NCAA goes to a 13th game you put yourself into a very tight hole with only two games to adjust as a "one timer" home game.

No major school would agree to a "one and done" at your place, so you knock your self out of ANY meaningful OOC schedules. Adding Pitt or any other school ,home/home,would kill any flexibility for future OOC matchups.

Beside we already play one "MAC" school in our OOC, why add another, permanently too boot?

  • Absolutely LOVE this idea - long overdue. It would quickly become our rivalry game.

  • I don't know schools like Miami, Florida, and FSU manage to all play themselves pretty regularly and it doesn't seem to hurt their scheduling too much. Would it restrict our schedule a bit ya but Pitt's really no better than a run of the mill team at this point so it's not like we would be locking ourselves into playing Alabama every year where we would then be forced to play a couple cupcakes. A schedule of Pitt and maybe a Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia, or Maryland along with a cupcake or 2 wouldn't be that much more difficult.

Well if wanting to renew what used to be one of the best rivalries in college football in my own backyard makes me selfish so be it!

  • A rivalry game that we can easily dominate? I like it.

  • While there might be some technicalities that will prevent us from scheduling this rivalry/series longterm, I still think it's a great idea and will only help bring the rivalry back as well as increase our footprint in western PA.

Pitt was "really good" for about ... ohh .... 9 years of the past 80 ??

Just so you understand that its selfish and not what's best for PSU Football - I know, I know ... you get that and you don't care.

I'm just hammering home the point that you're not a forward-thinking person and we all should be glad that you're not making the decisions around the joint.
