Hey everyone I was just wondering if you think OBrien is using this job as a stepping stone for another college job or a head coaching job in the NFL or is he planning on stayin for the long haul. If this off season is any indication of what is to come I believe he will have his contract extended and I'm hopin he is our coach for the future. I love his work ethic and and how he stresses life after football and academics as well as pushing to be the top program in college football. Let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks everyone

He has kept his word on everything so far, and he has publicly stated that he wants this to be his last job. I'm going to believe him until he proves otherwise. Best guess, he's at PSU 10 years with lots of success and gets tempted by the NFL, at which point he'll make a decision. If he doesn't bite, he stays 20 years and retires. Bottom line, I don;t think it's his intent right now to use this as a launching pad for either the NFL or another cfb job.

I find it hard that ANYONE would consider Penn State as a stepping stone to another college job. Unless there was a personal tie to a school or location or unless an ungodly amount of money was offered, what would another school offer that Penn State doesn't?

  • I think he's going to be the head coach until he's 83.

How long was Joe here. O'Brien could have taken numerous jobs, including a NFL gig with the Bucs.

  • When he was hired I immediately thought this was a stepping block to one day become an nfl coach, but after hearing his introductory press conference, I knew he was dedicated to the process of graduating kids and helping them to become better football players.. Now that doesn't mean he won't take an enticing job in the future, but for the time being, I think he's here for the right reasons..
