  • Hey everyone I was just wondering if you think OBrien is using this job as a stepping stone for another college job or a head coaching job in the NFL or is he planning on stayin for the long haul. If this off season is any indication of what is to come I believe he will have his contract extended and I'm hopin he is our coach for the future. I love his work ethic and and how he stresses life after football and academics as well as pushing to be the top program in college football. Let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks everyone

  • It's a good, and appropriate, question.

My opinion is that he'll stay longer than most are expecting (10-15 years, if he's successful), but he will end up taking a pro job at some point. It's hard to say for sure right now, though. I'm not sure if we'll know or not unless he starts going on interviews during the offseason.

  • Basically his entire career was in the college game. If he wins, he stays. Besides, college coaches jumping to the NFL is more or less a thing of the past. It's a unique situation which brings a college coach to the league.

  • A huge talking point and something he has mentioned more than a dozen times is honesty. So if you take him at his word that he believes in honesty and with him saying multiple times that he wants this to be his last coaching job.... you have your answer.

  • He says no..he'd like this to be where he stays.....

Listen, I love the job BOB's done so far, and I am a believer that he will win and recruit with the best of them. But he's not even been on the job for 6 months.... let's cool the "contract extension" talk.

Nevertheless, I agree that I think/hope he will be our coach for 10-15 years, and I really hope that he doesn't start interviewing for any other HC jobs in the coming years. That said, if his name pops up in high profile job searches, that means he'd have been very successful to that point.

  • From what I heard a big part of his interview success was that he was convincing in his desire to be here for a good long time (not uproot his family). Whether he was pulling the wool over some eyes is anyones guess.

  • I think BOB will be here for the long haul.... This was not a job you grab for the short term way too much building to do for a job hopper.

It woudln't surprise me if he was being 100% honest about not wanting to uproot his family and wanting to stay long term. He does have a special needs child and I would imagine that would be very hard moreso on the child than anyone.

At the end of the day...who really knows. I have no reason not to believe him when he says he wants to be here for a long time. Just my 2 cents.

Don't think he leaves in the near future (1-10 years) unless he's pushed out.

  • I'm not at all worried about him leaving for another college job, but the NFL will be a threat. At point before he was linked to PSU, I heard lots of talk that he could be a hot name for NFL HC jobs, now the only one I heard of any interest was Jacksonville, but I'm not sure how interested they really were. I'd like to believe he turned away pro offers and came here, but the truth is he might not have been getting much interest. If he does go to the NFL at some point, that means he was successful at PSU, and that isn't a bad problem to have.

  • I have heard many times college fits the hyper controlling coaching type better than the NFL since you control everything in the NFL you're just a part of it....

Not sure that fits Coach O'Bs description. He's been pretty adament about during this caravan that he wants Penn State to be his only Head Coaching job.

  • Honestly, my biggest fear (causing him to leave early) is that he has too much success too quickly. We have a super soft schedule this year and might have a very experienced team for our very tough schedule in 2013. If we rise back up as fast as some people thought we might (Post Joe), BO'B might peak early.

OB lost his mind on Brady and he is our HC/OC/QBC..... He sounds like a controlling type hence why he fits better in the college game.... Why do you think he would be better in the NFL?

He yelled at Brady because he was protecting a WR that Brady was criticizing. I have yet to hear anything out of him that leads me to believe he's the controllng type. He seems to have a lot more relaxed rules than Joe did.

If he's as good offensively as we think he is, he can be succesful anywhere. The difference between College and the NFL is the level of effort that goes into recruiting year round, being the face of a university football program, raising money, being public, and baby sitting players, on top of game planning.

By your assessment it sounds like he won't last here.... I disagree 100%

  • My personal opinion is that even if BOB thinks that he will use this as a "stepping stone" job, the longer he stays here, the less willing he will be to leave. If he can be successful for 5 years, I can see him being here for the long term.

  • I don't care when he leaves if he wins us a Mnc bc if e brings us to that level where we belong we will be back.

If we won the MNC in 3 years and he bolted that would be perfectly fine by me.

We would be an elite job again and have our pick of the hc.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

I'm saying he's more like Mack Brown than Joe Paterno/Nick Saban with regards to being a control freak. I think he believes in personal accountability, and leaves it up to the players to live up to that, rather than make an attempt to control their actions. We already see this with his rules regarding attire, hair, and facial hair.

He strikes me as someone who is naturally relaxed and confident, and not the type of coach who puts the fear of God into his players (something Joe did, long with others such as Saban and the Bear), but will get into people's faces when needed. Another example is that quote of his regarding his relationship with Paul Jones and how they have similar sense of humors...the Saban/Paterno types rarely got into personal relationships like that with players. It's an attitude also made famous by Herb Brooks.

I waiting to see him win before I worry about a contract extension. :) But I do agree his work ethic is nice to see, among other things. Love many of the previous staff, but they had no worries about proving themselves overall. The accountability level has increased, and so far the staffers seem to be up to task as far as putting in the effort.
