  • Not trying to sound like a big ten homer, but there is legit potential that the Big Ten wins the title in every weight class this year (NCAA).

Certainly there is really good competition from other conferences, but for the Big Ten to come home with 6 would be a lower expectation in my opinion.

As for the BIg Ten championships there will of course be some upsets, but I think the Steiber's are well above the rest at their weights, same goes for Ruth, Taylor, and probably Wright. I imagine Tony Nelson will win, but seems like people nationally aren't as high on him.

Should be some really nice matchups at 125, 149, 157, 174 ... but I think most of us know that.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

I'd say the weight classes least likely to have a B1G wrestler crowned as champion would be 141 and 149. I just can't see Maple or Oliver losing. To me, Oliver is as much of a lock as Ruth.

You're right though, I could definitely see the B1G taking 6 titles home.

  • I'd like to think that I follow wrestling well enough to know what's going on for the most part, but I've been really out of it since the loss to Iowa. Can one of you guys catch me up on how our guys have fared on an individual level since then?

125, Nico: hasn't lost, has been dominant since Iowa
133,Conaway: has done very well, aside from the Steiber match. Beat Thomas (Ill) and Mack (Pitt)
141, Pearsall: Sat out a mtach or two, but is 3-0 since with 2 pins
149, A. Alton: has been so-so, 4-1 since Iowa, but conditioning seems to be an issue
157, D. Alton: hasn't lost yet not dominant...he'll be just fine at B1Gs and NCAAs
    165, Taylor: dominant as usual
174, Brown: 1 loss to Heflin (OSU), but seems to be turning things around
    184, Ruth: dominant as usual
197, Wright: undefeated with a pin against Wilps (Pitt)
285, Lawson: grabbed the starting nod, is 4-1 in the last 5 matches...will be interesting to see how he does at B1Gs

  • Nice, thanks Justin! I was wondering about the Alton's and their conditioning since that did seem to be a problem at Iowa. I'm hoping their story doesn't become a cautionary tale. They're very talented but something is missing, it seems to me. Maybe it's just maturity, maybe it's something else, but I hope they figure it out. And by "figure it out" I mean reach their full potential. I think both guys, even as good as they have been, are under-achieving at this point. Am I off base?

    GRS154

  • Really looking forward to the Nico v McDonough and Stieber v Ramos matches. I really don't like Ramos's attitude it should be a fantastic match.

I agree. A Alton especially. Hopefully he can pick it up here and get into gear for these next few weeks

The finals will be televised, but that is it. It should be streaming live on PSU All-Access and / or Big Ten All-Access

I wouldn't say underachieving, AA as a true frosh didn't do too bad. This year, he was undefeated prior to the suspension and lost to Sueflohn and Tessari. Right now, it just seems to be a conditioning issue, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see him do some damage from the 6th seed (if the coaches don't change the seeding). DA was an All-American last yr, placing 3rd at NCAAs. To me, it looks like he has really closed the gap between he and DSJ. Don't sleep on DA, he can win B1Gs!

Good to hear.... I guess I just don't understand how at this point in the season conditioning is an issue for either of them. Suspension I guess? But I think that speaks to a lack of maturity. Good to hear someone in the know isn't too down on them.

The conditioning is not solely a reflection of their fitness but also the strain on their bodies to maintain their current weight. They look to be outgrowing their bodies a lil bit. Molinaro was like this as well, until he got it fully under control his last two years.

  • Also, the Alton's style favors them for deep runs in tourneys because they capitalize and finish quickly against favorable match ups early on. So in their later matches, they tend to be a little less worn down. The conditioning will become a factor in later matches for them, whereas more "timid" wrestlers have to maintain that for all their matches because they manage their matches.

My Dad wrestled in HS so he understands a lot about the struggles of maintaining weight, but for us regular folk it is hard to comprehend. My ignorant question: If they are having trouble maintaining their current weight class and they're outgrowing their bodies, why not just move up a class or two each? Obviously, they might displace some good wrestlers and the team might have to back-fill their classes with lesser wrestlers, but it seems to be the obvious fix. Clearly, I have no idea what I'm talking about so I'm hoping someone here can fill me in.

I can't really speak for wrestling, but in jujitsu there is definitely a major difference between weight classes. The guys that cut weight are usually stronger and bigger than guys that are fighting at their "walking around weight." You might be technically better, but they will just bully you around.

I am sure like you said a wrestling team also has to think about roster management issues.

You simply feel leaner, stronger, and faster. It gives you a definite advantage and you have to be able to match up with the next guy. In high school, I walked around at around 170 during football, and would cut down to 119 for wrestling. My frame allowed it and it just worked out that way. It was pure hell, but three weeks and I was good to go. Had I not cut down that low, I would've been outmuscled by much bigger guys.

In college, I walked at around 150 and would cut down to 125. I was still one of the smaller 125 lb wrestlers, and I ended up never seeing the mat and just left the sport after one year. Too much wear and tear, weight maintenance, just mentally and physically exhausting. If I moved up a weight, I would've never even had a chance to even have that minute and humble experience.

It's all about maximizing and staying competitive.

Interesting.... so rather than move up a weight class, it's better for wrestlers to move down a class for competitive purposes so long as you remain as strong as you were at the higher weight?

P.S. How the hell do you lose 50 pounds in 3 weeks?

Yes. A lot of it is water weight and lean mass you put on in months during the offseason. You'd be surprised what a 800 calories diet combined with two intense workouts a day can do. Combine that with a lot of dehydration prior to weigh ins and original certification weight, then you can slow the process down.

    NitLionsGo

  • In high school you got two pounds I believe in January so that helped some guys get down a weight class. They they wrestle at that weight to qualify for the postseason.

You can just tell they that the 'lighter' Alton is having a weigh issue ... they other thing to remember is that if they move up a weight they would in theory be pushing someone else up a weight class as well.

My guess is the Alton's decided or wrestled to see who would go to 157 and 149 ... they weren't going to bump Taylor up to 174 this year.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

I think it's phenomenal that AA is even down to 149 with his frame. But yes, this too.

In high school, you get two pounds in te fall once your certified, and then three pound allowance once the spring semester starts.

I typically would start the year 140-145 and within the first week or two was down to 120.

I only wrested for two years in high school (10th & 11th grade), but it was the single greatest thing I ever did for myself. You learn a lot about yourself and I believe they are many things I take from those days and apply it to my life.

The other thing is you need to wrestle off if you move a weight class. In order to do it you need to be darn sure you are the better wrestler. You usually know as in practice those are the guys you are wrestling with.
