Attendance trends - hope the administration knows what to do...

I think the economy is the biggest factor here. Not only are the tickets expensive, but you have to get food, use a lot of gas, get a parking pass, and possibly book a hotel. If you want to take your family to PSU for the weekend it could cost you upwards of $1000.

I said that on FOS when STEPs was being introduced and the heat I took from the clique was hot. Not that they had a rebuttal to $40 dollar parking for last minute folk, or a steep increase in ticket cost in the face of a fierce recession.

  • I get that profits are critical and believe they are up, but is it sustainable? Right now the drop is a trend, both here and nationally, and there is no reason to believe its bottomed out yet. Ignoring the trend, especially with recent STEP here, would be foolish. AD has to at least look at in the larger context to insure profits continue, that there isn't a point of diminishing returns on the horizon.

Agree with those that say the empty seats could become a problem. PSU is unique, out in middle of nowhere and still seating 110K, and generally filling over the years. There are ton of reasons why 110K used to show up religiously, one of them is the "show". Empty seats undermines the atmosphere. A lot has changed, and there is no guarantee everyone is still willilng to make the sacrifices, monetary and otherwise, to continue to show up. Recent evidence is that it is not working.

  • I hate to tell you guys, but it would take a lot less people to not attend games before PSU would make less money than they would if ticket prices were at a pre-STEP level.

I think they need to offer some half season packages and 3 game packs, both with reduced rates. And they may. But I don't see STEP going away or being made cheaper.

Didn't suggest making it pre-STEP cheap... But the suggestions that you make are ways to adjust it, to get more people in the stands. That is more than the current admin is doing. You just did more than they have lol Maximize the system, be flexible and come up with solutions. That's all we ask of our administration... You know to work hard and actually do their job when they notice that it's not working at it's full potential...

I think you will see that in the 2nd half of the season if the trend continues.

I hope so man. Hope so. Some of the suggestions that people have come up with are smart. I just hope that the people in charge of this are too. I have been alarmed at the ineptitude of people in charge of my alma mater...

  • As someone who doesn't have season tickets, is STEP like a PSL for a professional team (a one time fee to reserve the rights to purchase the same seats each season) or does it require annual fees ("donations") in addition to the cost of the tickets? If the latter, is it more than was required before STEP was established?

If you know you're going to the game a day or so ahead of time I thought you could buy a parking pass for $10?

You can. You can buy them a week ahead of time and have them mailed to you - or you can get them at the BJC through Friday afternoon.

  • Most big schools have a STEP type plan in place. In my opinion, empty seats are mostly economic. STEP was launched with bad timing. I am most familiar with UF. Guess what, they have had empty seats too. Also see NASCAR, NFL, etc.

From a greed standpoint I like it. No more end zone!

I understand your thinking but, next year what do you say to the person who is paying $600.00 to sit in a seat. We want you to pay full price again so if the games not sold out we can discount the remaning tickets again to people who don't give anything. Let them empty, if not for the sanctions no one would care if the seats were empty.

Step is a required annual donation on top of annual tickets price. Basically what happened was there was a group of long time season ticket holders sitting in prime seats were giving less money than people sitting in end zone. PSU offered the people sitting in those seats a chance to make larger donation or move to other location. A lot of long time season ticket holders did not renew at those demands.. Therefore a lot of seats between the east 20 yard lines remain open. This year the university has included the step donation per game in the sale of those open sits, making those seats higher priced than normal. I think the university feels thru graduation those tickets will eventualy be filled by graduating seniors the following years to come.

  • With how much tickets are now compared to what they were ten years ago, I don't think they care about attendance numbers. They caree about how much money is being made. If tickets are now three time higher then ten years ago and we they only lose about 15 thousand in attendance for the lower level games they are still making more money then they used to.

Fill the stadiumn for big games and they are making three times the amount then they used to. That's all it is about making money.

  • I do not have much faith in this administration doing what most of us want - finding a pricing plan which will fill up the stadium. Even if this would be their objective or one of their objectives, I don't have much faith in them devicing the right type of pricing plan to achieve this objective. As more and more seats open up, more and more season tickets holders will decide to drop their season tickets because they will be able to pick and choose the games they really want to attend. It also will not help that there are no big name national opponents over the next few years on the out-of-conference schedule and the team will likely struggle to remain competitive as a middle tier Big 10 team during the sanction years in a conference that seems to be getting weaker as each year passes.

I understand what you are saying. And right now profit is a bottom line and it is the most important. I just think that there is a way to do both. Maybe it's not totally at capacity, but the suggestions of a few on here seem to be pretty smart, and would work, and are worth at least discussing. They don't even seem to be prepared to do that... The fact that they arent even talking about it, while people are noticing and commenting, just shows that they are ignoring a problem that could be fixed while keeping profits high. i think we can do both here- or should at least strive to try to do both...

Rmj147 totally agree with you, I think there is a better way they could handle the attendance and the pricing. I just don't think they care. I would love to see the stadiumn at capacity for every game. I think The leadership at penn state only looks at how much money they make, they don't care what we think or what makes the alumni and the fans happy.

I used to take my rv to every home game. Now with gas prices and ticket cost I pick two home games and one away game to go to every year. I take my kids to the blue white game ( they are 8 and 9)

Hopefully the leadership will start realizing the fans and Alumni are not happy and changes need to be made.

Agree, B'OB is "selling" recruits a packed Paterno Stadium x 7-8 home games and a continued decline in attendance will carry lots of unintended consequences.

    What's a Paterno Stadium?

    MTayl72

  • Quite honestly.....aside from making some minor changes to ticket packages/pricing, changing leadership can have a big enough impact to weather the storm. I know a lot of people who would be more inclined to weather the price if we had a leadership (BOT and President) that came out and defended our university and "rallied the troops" as opposed to creating divide. Everyone wants to talk about STEP (which i agree has hurt sales) but ignores the fact that the frustration of alumni is also a driving factor on attendance. You get a leader who comes out and publicly supports the university carefully and encourages/embraces the importance of athletics, primarily football, people would most likely make the financial sacrifice reluctantly. Obviously winning is a large factor as well. If we were 3-0 going into Temple, that number would be significantly different. I strongly believe the divide created by Peetz/Surma and company has an important role in attendance as well. There is nothing wrong with our leaders being proud of our athletics culture. Numbers don't lie and never have. Unfortunately I think unity is unattainable under the current regime.

    What's a Paterno Stadium?

Probably the place where the cardboard cutouts of Joe Paterno and the white roses are. Where people stand for their picture and place photos of him outside.

It's right across the street from the baseball field

That's why I think it may only be the last couple of games that they will do some kind of promo. What they should do is offer reduced prices to season ticket holders first to help protect this kind of thing from happening. After that, offer them to businesses around PA. The general public could be last.

I know that isn't what people want to hear, but if you are trying to insulate pricing while selling un-sold tickets, you have to keep it out of the general public's hands.
