I have a class with this professor, and he spent five to ten minutes telling my class on Friday morning that "we didn't have to put up with people like the Preacher yelling at us on campus." He got pretty fired up about it.
I really like him as a professor- he shows a ton of enthusiasm for his work, and presents his message clearly in a concise manner. He has really easy notes as well.
I hope he doesn't get in too much trouble for this, although I'm not sure why he would.

I think the point is that he has nothing to do with PSU and yet harasses students daily while they are trying to get an education. I'm not sure he's arguing that he shouldn't be allowed to do what he does legally as much as he is encouraging the students to utilize THEIR right to attend class without being harassed. There are limits to the 1st amendment and courts rule on them all the time like the westboro baptist folks having to keep a certain distance from funerals.
Maybe I missed it in the video, but I didn't see him tell the preacher that he couldn't be there.

Never heard of this clown before today. Seems like a fixture on campus. If he did call a student a whore as NitLionsGo claims then he deserved to be confronted by the professor. If not, the professor obviously lost his composer and looked foolish in doing so. JMO.

He was walking by when the preacher walked up to a random female student and called her a whore to her face because she was a student at PSU. That is what angered him because the preacher didn't even know the student, and he is known to do this.
I saw mr. Catlett walk up to a friend of mine many years ago and ask her if she opened her legs up the night before, and while she was in shock, he yelled out to the crowd that he already knows she did.
Free speech is one thing, and the prof is not trying to suppress it, but he does have a point that there's difference between harassment and free speech.

This... Guy is an asshole. It's not free speech. It's harassment. And he has no business on campus. He's not a student, he's not a professor. Any female that he did this to (I have personally seen it too) could have a legit claim to call the police. If I was a female and was disrespected, I would. He's a no class asshole. And I thought the professor was very smart in addressing his harassement of people every day. Made several good points. As many have said- fine line between free speech and insulting people on the street.

Obviously it's a fine line--if it was a thick one, it would be easy to say what's free speech and what isn't. The fact that it is a fine line requires us to err on the side of free speech or risk eroding those rights--in my opinion.
I lived in State College for 10 years after I graduated. I heard drunk people yelling insults at other people all the time--people they clearly didn't know. I don't see much difference between that and what the WP does--especially if you ( and I mean the universal "you") think he is crazy.

I've also seen some repercussions of the drunk insults. I'm not advocating knocking out the WP when he insults a female, but an unprovoked verbal attack on her should not go without repercussions. When it comes to unprovoked verbal attack then PSU should step in to protect the students. Freedom of speech is not a license to say anything without consequence.
