Argument between Willard Preacher and Penn State Professor

  • PureRockFury said...

There's really no point in arguing with these religious types. They're completely nuts. You should just ignore them, and leave them and their imaginary man who lives in the sky to themselves.

Yes and no. I agree that usually it is best to just move on (not worth the time or effort, as you will not change their mind)...however, there is something about "what is good for the goose is good for the gander, too" in this. When someone exercises their right to free speech to CONSTANTLY harass and harangue...it is kind of nice to see a courageous soul stand up to them loudly and "call them out." Again, kudos to the professor.

hahahah the prof is an unhinged fool? lol lol lol

I don't know if he is or not. I said he looked like one. I take it you watched the video and disagree. My experience with the Willard preacher is that he always kept his cool when 'debating' people on the steps. Often times he would get yelled at or called names. I don't agree with the way he delivers his message as I think it turns more people off than on, but the guy always kept his cool while other people got in his face, yelled, etc.
The people that lost their cool were always students. I've never seen a professor confront him and I think this guy looked juvenile in the way he did it.
As many have said here, if you don't like what he's saying, keep walking.

  • You know how he became the Willard Preacher? During his partying and dropping out of school days, he dropped acid and got a calling from god in front of the Willard Building. At least that is the story I heard.

Anyways, I dont mind the Preacher doing his thing as it is mainly entertainment during walks or killing some time. I dont really listen to him much (though he can actually be humorous at times), but it does intrigue me as I wait for someone to argue with him.

I have a class with this professor, and he spent five to ten minutes telling my class on Friday morning that "we didn't have to put up with people like the Preacher yelling at us on campus." He got pretty fired up about it.

I really like him as a professor- he shows a ton of enthusiasm for his work, and presents his message clearly in a concise manner. He has really easy notes as well.

I hope he doesn't get in too much trouble for this, although I'm not sure why he would.

I find it interesting that, as a political science professor, he has no problem with the suppression of free speech.

I wonder if he'd feel the same way about someone shouting opinions he agreed with.

I think the point is that he has nothing to do with PSU and yet harasses students daily while they are trying to get an education. I'm not sure he's arguing that he shouldn't be allowed to do what he does legally as much as he is encouraging the students to utilize THEIR right to attend class without being harassed. There are limits to the 1st amendment and courts rule on them all the time like the westboro baptist folks having to keep a certain distance from funerals.

Maybe I missed it in the video, but I didn't see him tell the preacher that he couldn't be there.

He was walking by when the preacher walked up to a random female student and called her a whore to her face because she was a student at PSU. That is what angered him because the preacher didn't even know the student, and he is known to do this.

I saw mr. Catlett walk up to a friend of mine many years ago and ask her if she opened her legs up the night before, and while she was in shock, he yelled out to the crowd that he already knows she did.

Free speech is one thing, and the prof is not trying to suppress it, but he does have a point that there's difference between harassment and free speech.

  • Never heard of this clown before today. Seems like a fixture on campus. If he did call a student a whore as NitLionsGo claims then he deserved to be confronted by the professor. If not, the professor obviously lost his composer and looked foolish in doing so. JMO.

10 Questions: The Willard Preacher - Onward State

Here at Penn State, it is rumored that the three most recognizable people are Joe Paterno, Graham Spanier, and Gary Catell, who is appropriately named the Willard Preacher. Whether or not that's true, nearly every single student sees the Willard Preacher and for someone who is in his own right a human landmark, barely anyone knows who he actually is.

I was speaking more to the comments he made in his classroom, not what he said in the video. If he said that, then he is advocating for the suppression of free speech because it is making some people uncomfortable.

I'm not a fan at all of the Willard preacher's style--and he was there when I was a student in the mid-80's. So I'm quite familiar with it. I just find that people generally want to limit the rights of free speech when they don't like what is being said, and not just the way it is being said. I think the WP's style is incredibly counter-productive to his supposed goal. But he has a right to make an idiot of himself. People insult people all the time when they are drunk and no one's saying they need to have their rights suppressed.

I've seen people say some pretty vile stuff on here about Vickie Tripponey and that writer from the Washington Post. I don't like anything those two women have said/done in regards to the Sandusky stuff, but I don't see how saying that kind of thing is any different than what the WP says. Saying insulting stuff about people you don't know, instead is dealing with what you do know.

He brings up an interesting point about the freedom of speech not equating to the freedom to badger or berate those around him.

If this were done at a McDonald's, the preacher would probably be asked to leave, but because it's on a public university's grounds and he is somewhat of a figure on campus, he gets the pass.

I don't really care either way, the preacher doesn't bother me personally, but I could see why he would bother others.

Freedom of speech means the government can not lock you up for what you say. That is ALL it means. It does not mean that you can say whatever you want to anyone at anytime with no consequences. It certainly does not mean that a professor can not tell you to shut up.

This... Guy is an asshole. It's not free speech. It's harassment. And he has no business on campus. He's not a student, he's not a professor. Any female that he did this to (I have personally seen it too) could have a legit claim to call the police. If I was a female and was disrespected, I would. He's a no class asshole. And I thought the professor was very smart in addressing his harassement of people every day. Made several good points. As many have said- fine line between free speech and insulting people on the street.

Obviously it's a fine line--if it was a thick one, it would be easy to say what's free speech and what isn't. The fact that it is a fine line requires us to err on the side of free speech or risk eroding those rights--in my opinion.

I lived in State College for 10 years after I graduated. I heard drunk people yelling insults at other people all the time--people they clearly didn't know. I don't see much difference between that and what the WP does--especially if you ( and I mean the universal "you") think he is crazy.

I've also seen some repercussions of the drunk insults. I'm not advocating knocking out the WP when he insults a female, but an unprovoked verbal attack on her should not go without repercussions. When it comes to unprovoked verbal attack then PSU should step in to protect the students. Freedom of speech is not a license to say anything without consequence.

If you're drunk, you get a DIP. If you just an asshole, you can call the police on him and let them handle it. Maybe he will get a harassement charge or a simple assault... He will probably be back the next day, but at least it will ruin his day, just as it did yours (as a female). Calling every woman a whore as they walk past is not free speech. It's misogyny

Yep. I've seen plenty of people charged for dumb drunk behavior. And they should be. And I agree 100%, even when not drunk, you cannot just say and do anything you want without consequence.

That's called disorderly conduct, and some have argued that what WP is classified the same in his actions. There have been days where police have showed up to tell him to leave because of him crossing that line.

He wants to get under people's skin and cause a scene, just to show that he has self control whereas others don't. Every time someone reacts, it's a personal victory for him. Honestly, they should let PSU and law enforcement handle it when he's throwing insults at normal students. It's a quality of life issue, and PSU is private property by definition.

I'm a police officer now, and if I knew what I know now back then, I would have called the police into the matter and filed a complaint. You don't have the right to confront random strangers, obstruct their path on the sidewalk, just to call them a whore, and convince yourself it's free speech.

Sadly enough, this is coming from a guy who is hiding behind the image that he's a Christian man, but reality is that he is more focused on discussing hell and his Orthodoxy religion.
