Are these linebacker offers commitable?

  • I know we're waiting for Issah and Benton to commit. Do you think their offers are commitable at this point? Perhaps staff knows that Anzalone and Newby are showing increased interest, and perhaps staff is giving these two likely higher-rated players until, say, mid-July, to commit and told Benton and Issah to hold off a bit, and if AA and Newby don't come on board, then staff will accept the commitments of Benton and Issah. Perhaps when Bell committed, they did not know that Newby would be showing interest so they allowed that commitment. I have no idea if this is indeed the case, but it seems that, given their supposed interest in PSU, Benton and Issah are not jumping on board more quickly to beat out AA or Newby. This may be an explanation. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • according to Bradshaw, they want 2 ILBs and 2 OLBs -- if the evaluations on here match those of the staff, they already have one of each.

So now we're left looking at 3 OLBs and Benton as an ILB -- that implies that Benton can commit if he wants, while not all the OLBs can. My guess is Issah's offer depends on what happens with the others.

And that is assuming that they are actually recruiting all as LBs, rather than liking one or more on offense.

  • Makes sense, thanks!

  • Benton has a spot no matter what IMO or at least I pray that's the case. AA definitely has a spot no matter what (seems to be the consensus of board members). Can't really say the same for Issah IMO. Newby is an enigma because he's doing his recruitment Viet-cong style and visiting schools under the cover of darkness with strict radio silence.

You might be right about Issah, but I don't know. My guess is that it is commitable. I have no doubt, however, that Benton's offer is commitable.

Also, your comment about the two "higher-rated" players is a bit misguided. Just because the recruiting services have AA and Newby as highly rated players, BOB is on record several times about the fact that rankings mean nothing to him and his staff. They also made that clear with Mahon, Nelson, Cothran, Robinson, etc. already this year.

You might be right that the staff values AA and Newby higher than Benton and Issah, it could be the opposite of that, it could be that they're all equal in the staff's eyes, or frankly it could be any combination of the above.

Issah is waiting on a Oregon offer (I think) and Benton's coach wanted him to wait and visit more school.... that's most likely the reason for their delay. AA will take his time, this time (I hope), and Newby could announce in July. I don't think it has anything to do with commitable offers for those 4 guys at this point. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I read the tea leaves.

Completely understand, but I based my "higher-rated" comment on the fact that it may appear to some that staff is putting a bit harder press on AA at this point, and possibly even Newby, trying to get him come in quickly for a second visit. That was the point of my initial post - is staff holding off on Issah and possibly even Benton because they feel that Newby and/or AA are more viable options at this point (ie, higher rated). This certainly may not be the case, but I'm just wondering out loud.

Understood.... and I think the deal with AA is that he's highly rated by the recruiting services (and has been moving up the ranks even more) while the staff similarly has him as one of the top LBs on their board--if not the top guy overall at this point. My guess is that Benton and AA are the staff's top ILB and OLB left on their board.
