  • I was a State Patty's Day insider before outsiders even knew what the heck it was.

I also think it's in the best interest of a bar to not serve someone who just turned 21 shots on their birthday or serve them @ midnight or just after on the day they turn 21.

If someone wants to get stupid drunk with their friends on their 21st go to a frat or have your own blowout.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

I appreciate your contributions to the fantastic day that is State Patty's, you have paved the way for the rest of us.

As to the 21 bday stuff, they can have their own parties. I'm a grouch (in case you couldn't tell from my posts ITT), and it bugs the hell out of me when I go downstairs for a social, and some girl has a crown on and is demanding certain songs be played and getting lap dances. The damned situation gets in the way of my drinking, which I can't tolerate. Go to the Phyrst sloots, that's what it's there for.

In the words of RMJ .... PREACH!!!

There was seriously a time when State Patty's Day was during the week, per wikipedia it say the first was in 2007.

    Can't be as I graduated in 2006.

Well, Saint Patty's day was always celebrated. Isn't STATE Patty's different? I graduated in '05 and there was no such "State" Patty's then.

  • I graduated in 2002 and there was no such thing as State Patty's Day. People just had parties and that was that. That said, I can certainly understand why the locality would hammer down on it, based on the way it evolved. During football season, State College PD has to call in cops from all over the State to handle the drunks out at night. From what I understand, State Pattys day is WAY worse in terms of alcohol consumed and just plain number of trashed people out on the streets at night. It's not just property damage - though that would be a big issue - but the sheer amount of criminal activity going on, that the police likely doesn't have the capacity to handle. If your a homeowner in the State College, you probably HATE State Pattys day. You accept Football weekends, and you accept the end of Spring semester blowouts as a normal part of living in a college town, but they probably draw the line at a manufactured drunk fest that's worse than both football weekends and bar tour season. As a local homeowner, I'd probably support anything the town does to stop State Patty's day in its tracks. If I were a barowner, I appreciate the alcohol sales, but hate the negative BS I have to deal with from local homeowners, the burrough, etc that have to deal with the aftermath of all this - not to mention the extra costs of hiring the bouncers and fixing the damage.

It's not the students who see their tax money into cleaning up that mess to State College. It's everyone else.

My friend and I can't remember the exact year (2006 or 2007), but it was done because students believed the administration (true or not) planned spring break on Saint Patrick's day to reduce drinking.

IIRC, on Saint Patrick's Day 2004, there was a police raid on a fraternity that resulted in a lot of underages and changes to the rules for parties at Frats - mostly focused on who got in. So students assumed the spring break timing was another step to kill Saint Patrick's day at PSU and in the bigger picture curb drinking at the school.

Maybe we just called it State Patty's day even though it was Saint Patty's Day ... then in 2007 it became official due to the spring break thing.

  • Just saw the general release of the weekend stuff.

34 business voluntarily not opening and or not serving alchohol plus Nittany Lion Inn and Penn Stater.

Magistrate on duty 24/7. You get busted you are taken immediately. Pay the fine if ya have it, or wait in jail til someone can pay it for you. All at the county prison. So if you are gonna wander about...have a card with a min of 500 dollars on it depending on the offense and whether it is a first time.

So to all going out, keep it down some so they don't show up for noise, and be safe(taxi prolly best bet so no chance of your dd getting in trouble for something) and by golly while being safe and moderately smart...have some fun. :).

This is a gigantic pain in the ass if you're a non-student resident of the borough and want to have a damn drink on Saturday.

BUT I DON'T WANT TO GO TO BOALSBURG, I WANT TO GO TO THE PHYRST

I moved back here from Northern Virginia, and while I appreciate the lack of traffic and better (read as: not swamp-like) environment, PA liquor laws drive me insane. Not to mention this State Patty's Day nonsense. In my day (2001-2004) we drank when we wanted to, so EVERY DAY was Saint Patrick's.

interesting I thought in America individual business owners could voluntarily shut down the business is any day they want to. Never heard that associated with communist Russia :)

PA liquor laws make no sense. I went to undergrad out of state and was PO'd at some of them when I came back for law school. I feel your pain. The LCB just adds to the stupidity. And the borough leadership is so backward that I wonder if some of them double as BOT members.
