You know the State Patty's guy and that's all you know about the situation yet you think that makes you the go-to info guy about this and you're flat out wrong. Congrats, he had a beer on State Patty's. Fuck me sideways with a lunchbox! You think the LCB WANTS no alcohol sales on State Patty's? No! If the businesses wanted it, there would be alcohol sales. But it's not about that! It's about the $$$ from damages downtown. Which you don't seem to get. And it's not something that shooting the breeze with your boy at the bar is gonna get you to understand. You think you're the only one friends with someone who owns a bar or restaurant downtown? I know 2 restaurant owners who would love nothing more than the sale of alcohol on State Patty's because news flash: drunks eat a lot. But he's against it because it's turned the corner from increased tragic from dumb drunks to straight destruction. It's not costs just brought upon bars, but a burden put on the entire downtown economy and restaurant segment that has to deal with this problem. And Tex, no one said frats are to blame for it getting out of control. It's the fact that they are fighting the wrong battle. Trying to convince those in charge that they are out of touch with drinking and that they "can't stop" drinking isn't gonna change a damn thing. It will only change when the focus is put on limiting outsiders from coming in and trashing the place in one weekend, and then leaving. IFC leaders need to refocus their points of contention if they want to make any progress. Otherwise, this will continue to be a point of contention that drives everyone crazy until something really tragic happens.

What do the damages downtown have to do with the bars? You think that the damage will stop now? Do you think that the only drunk people were those that came from bars? Do you think that underage college kids did not drink? See previous post... it's about to be worse... At least in the bars, you can police the people WHILE THEY ARE DRINKING. Who is watching/babysitting drunks in the house parties? Good luck. They will be more drunk than ever and harder to find.

And you say that I know the guy that made the holiday and thats it? hahaha Like I said, I know like 20 people in the nightlife industry including OWNERS of the BARS... How am I not knowledgable? But you have one friend that works in one of the bars? Ok man. You know restaurant owners? And how is shutting down bars going to stop drunk people on a drunk holiday from eating in their establishments? You speak of the ENTIRE TOWN... Im talking specifically the act of shutting down bars. What positive impact does that have? What you are saying goes back to my original point. YOU CANNOT SHUT DOWN THE DAY. That is their goal... To shut it down, to kill State Pattys... That is not going to happen. That is not possible. That is not what is going to happen. The goal SHOULD BE, more effective control/policing... From that point on, their approach is highly flawed and it shows.

I am talking about specifically bars. You think that shutting down the bars will solve all the problems that you describe happening to the town in general? Again, I argue that shutting the bars down makes things worse. It's COUNTERPRODUCTIVE and BACKWARDS. People are still going to get hammered. You just made it easier for them to get more drunk, not in the bars, but around other drunk people... Spread out further throughout town... Good luck with that.

You're probably right, but what they're doing to try and cut down on drinking is doing much good either.

Bars shutting down is their business. I heard Indigo is supposed to have $2 drinks from tomorrow night until Sunday, so I guess its up to them what they want to do.

I agree with this post, but its literally impossible to cut down on visitors. The best thing PSU has done so far was limit freshmen to one visitor per dorm room, but even that is extremely difficult to regulate and uphold. They can't quarantine State College, so kids are going to come up and destroy State College. Its a shame, because I actually really enjoy State College and the locals. I don't like seeing some moron from IUP or WVU or Pitt or whatever coming up and tearing up the place or campus where I live, it drives me nuts. I just don't see how its realistically possible to stop that from happening now that State Patty's has gained the momentum it has, so I get frustrated when people are cutting down on me, a 21 year old PSU student who doesn't get dangerously drunk and break stuff and go apeshit all weekend, drinking on a weekend that I would really like to. I see a lot of the backlash that happens because of the regulations, and it gets frustrating.

Hopefully things never get to the point where somebody has to die for people to get it, but I'm not sure how things are going to settle down.

Point 1. Exactly, but 99.9% of the bars think this is too risky BECAUSE OF THE LCB and LOCAL POLITICS. Not particularly talking to you, just pointing out again, that they have made this so.

Point 2. Closing down the bars makes this even worse. And, no, it is not fair to you as a responsible adult. At all. That is another key point here. And they have done nothing to correct the problem. Nothing at all, except make it worse. Kids are still going to drink. And some are going to get alcohol poisoning or do something stupid while drunk. That is what young, inexperienced drinkers do...

This is going to sound pretty arrogant, but I think a lot of the problem with young outsiders coming into town is that they're not used to the party scene at PSU and can't handle it. A lot of kids get way too drunk, way too early, and then mob mentality takes over and they break stuff because they don't have to deal with the consequences or eyesores on Monday.

Like I said, you're not the only one connected with bar/restaurant owners downtown.
And I never said that shutting the bars down will solve the problem. No one sees that as a permanent solution. But it is their way of, for the time being, insulating themselves from the mayhem and limiting their exposure to property damage because even with a couple extra bouncers, the sheer number of people in and around these bars on State Patty's (that are not from here) is crazy. Like I also said, bars aren't the only ones who have done this type of action for the time being. Many of campus complexes are going apeshit on just about everyone throwing a party this weekend b/c lots of them got wrecked last year (when the only action taken was by some bars limiting alcohol sales.. Which left the apartments with their pants down.)
None of this is a permanent solution to the problem and I never said that it was.
All I've been saying is that the only way anyone can find a solution to this is to stop being hardheaded about "man they don't want us to drink so we'll show them!!!!" And to realize that we as students simply have to stop inviting many of our stupid ass friends from out of town who quite frankly don't give a damn about this place and had no problem condemning it all year. Because the extremely large majority of arrests and damage that takes place is a result of non Penn Staters who go crazy because they're leaving at the end of the weekend. (And they can't hang with us). Only until we deal with that issue will we be able to actually enjoy a State Patty's day without all the negative BS that comes along with it every year.

All I've been saying is that the only way anyone can find a solution to this is to stop being hardheaded about "man they don't want us to drink so we'll show them!!!!"

If that is your main point, I have never said that ever... I do not disagree with that. Please look in any of my posts and show me where I said "lets rebel!"? That will happen undoubtedly with other people, but I am older, and even when I was young, I never got down and reckless like that. I agree with you wholeheartedly there. People need to be personally accountable and stop being idiots. I never said, everyone, lets be idiots because the bars are closed. But acting like that isn't what will happen with young college students is a bit nieve IMO.

My main point is talking about shutting down the bars on this drunk holiday and the problems that it actually causes. I think that as far as damage and drunk behavior goes, this year is going to be one of the worst. For the various reasons that I have said above. People are now going to be getting hammered in the presence of other hammered people- not in front of bar staff that can monitor them. You are going to have people spread all over town, not in the 8-10 blocks of main drag where all the bars are.

Further, you cannot insulate yourself from property damage. Damages are going to happen all throughout SC. And for the most part, like I said, I talked to one owner of a bar tonight- he wants to be open. He is not worried about insulating his own property from damage... Some may be, but I have yet to hear that from them or any of their GMs, and I know plenty. They all describe the situation of the LCB and local politics making their job harder- EVERY DAY- but to another level on big football weekends and on State Pattys. So they said F it. We aren't going to be open and risk that. Screw it, we'll close down for the day. Let other people (bars, apparently Indigo is going to be open) take that risk (of the LCB cracking down with citations, suspension of license). Licenses in town are like gold. And the LCB is always trying to take them or mess with them, and the bars will do anything to keep them insulated (even moreso than personal property). Another thing that makes absolutely no sense. Less bars lead to over-crowding and problems.

Moreover, do you thnk that shutting down the bars will "insulate the mayhem" on State Pattys day? Mayhem is going to happen... And IMO it will be even worse. The "temporary solution" that they have come up with is going to make things worse. Sometimes a temporary fix does just that. Shutting down bars on a drunk holiday is just impractical... I know it can be counter-intuitive, but it really causes more problems than it will ever solve- even temporarily.
