Anyone else concerned about the impact the Sandusky trial ...

  • might have on the 2013 class once the trial starts? I would love to see him just plead guilty and take a plea bargain.

  • I want the trial to happen as soon as possible. I think Joe will be largely vindicated at the trial and McQueary, Curley and Schultz will be seen in a much more favorable light. Also, I'm not sure the charges will stick - there have been a lot of scandalous allegations, but no rebutted testimony.

If he's guilty, he plea bargains and there is an unfinished story. If he is not guilty, JS wants it to go to trial and the Commonwealth has to prove its case. I'm not sure they can do this. It really isn't clear how many alleged victims are willing to testify. You have to remember that these were already troubled kids and they have probably continued to be troubled kids and adults. Any defense counsel would be able to attack their credibility as witnesses fairly easily.

As far as recruits, I'm sure they've been told there has been a clean sweep and we're starting over and they're satisfied with that.

  • Unless more bad comes out, and it very well may happen, we should be okay for the most part. The trial isn't what I'm worried about though...the Federal Investigation is where the trouble may surface.

only thing that scares me is the ncaa opinion...if they get scared of pressure from the public(espn) to bring forth sanctions, then they might try to take a scholly away, or ban us for a year, i don't think it is right or that they will do it...but i was plenty shocked when joe got fired (board couldn't handle joes public statement)

If there's a federal investigation of PSU, there better be one at Syracuse, half the religious denominations in the country, Congress (i.e. Mr. Frank), numerous school districts, the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, youth detention facilities and the entire entertainment industry. Otherwise, its just selective piling on.

guys like tressel and paterno make a better story then guys like calipari, boehiem, and calhoun...media today(maybe before as well) just want stories, espn has become too big, i have boycotted them execpt for games, then i switch out during commericial....would have no issue with another sports station trying to come in

  • The trial will be ugly. ESPN will probably dedicate their entire front page to it. I don't think it will make a difference in our recruiting though. It has nothing to do with the current staff and these kids know that. As for NCAA sanctions, I always reference this article:

  • Yes the trial will probably put a damper on recruiting - the good news is that it starts in May and will be over by July. The season will still be 3 months away, and by the time it starts the trial will be old news. So overall I don't think it will affect the class that greatly.

The NCAA however - if they decide to do something would really, really hurt the class. That's the wildcard. I think we can all agree they have no basis for what happened with Sandusky, but the NCAA hasn't been known for doing rational things.

  • As I'm sure is the case with everyone here, I have gone over the facts A LOT over the past few months and here is the conclusion that I came up with... it's going to be VERY hard to convict Schultz an Curley. I keep going back to Dr. Dranov's testimony to the GJ where he said that he asked Mike three times if "something sexual" occured and Mike said "no". Then you add the fact that Mike's story has changed several times and that JVP is no longer with us... I just don't know how the State can "prove" their case in this.

If they do get off, then there would have to be a big find by the Feds for anything significant to happen to PSU. And by "big find", I mean something like a traceable, blatent hush-payment to a victim's family. Basically, it would be something that would make you absolutely sick (not like this isn't a sickening situation anyways). If that were to occur, a bunch of people need to go to jail. However, I think that situation is very, very unlikely.

As for Sandusky, who knows. Way to many variables to consider.

coffee Not concerned. As stated above, most attached to the scandal are no longer attached to PSU. Something big started with BO'B and his staff. They've already proven they can answer any questions about the scandal. I haven't heard of any recruits since Spence, Cam and Armani who are using the scandal as an excuse for not coming to PSU. And seriously, that was a convenient out for them to chase UM's skirt.

John Montelus is one...grew up a PSU fan, but apparently his mother has ruled us out.

However, in general I'm not sure we'll hear about kids who "use the scandal as an excuse to not come to PSU." I have no doubts they are out there, but they can always give other reasons for not wanting to go to PSU.

Unfortunately, I think we're going to see a situation that is...a little similar to the last few years, but maybe on a smaller scale. Where there's something at the school (previously Joe in his old age) that makes kids much less interested in PSU, but they rarely come right out and say that that is the reason. JMO.

If the NCAA caves to public pressure to bring forth sanctions in a situation that is not under their jurisdiction, that will be the end of the NCAA.

There are all sorts of Aesop-like morals that floated through my head while reading this. Mostly applicable to the schools who would sit by if the NCAA punished PSU for this. Something about giving your enemy power over your friends, which then comes back to bite you when that enemy uses the power against you.

Not the best description, but I would hope most schools would see the NCAA punishing PSU to not be in their best interest.
