Angelo Mangiro at the Under Armour All-American Game

  • Just some quick thoughts on Angelo's game last night. I didn't get to watch as much of it as I wished, due to the Bradley-chasing and the Nowicki story, but I got some solid looks at his play. First off, let me state the obvious that the offensive line is at an immediate disadvantage in a game like this. Very tough for a lineman to show out when the defensive line is essentially pinning its ears back and going after the quarterback on every play.

I was very surprised with his ability to pass protect. He didn't do a lot of it in high school and was able to contain the rush very well last night. Unlike some of his teammates, he was able to move his feet and keep his man in front of him. He got a good punch and was able to keep defensive linemen off balanced. He did not get bullrushed at all from what I saw.

In the run game, he did get stood up a few times and stoned by the defensive tackles for the Red team. He also found himself out of a few plays at times after sliding off a block or something. He's got a college-ready frame. He may need to redistribute a couple of pounds, but he looks like he could play now.

All in all, thought he really played well for the white team in those circumstances. Would agree that he was one of the top three, maybe even the best, interior line prospects in the game. Really liked what I saw from Mangiro last night.

Here is a video interview conducted with him after the game. He talks about his performance in the game, his thoughts on the future, his thoughts on Joe Paterno's future, whether or not teams have used Paterno's future against Penn State and where he goes from here. Pretty solid interview if I may say.

    Enjoy.

  • Sean, do you know if he went up against Clowney at all last night? I'm not sure what team Clowney played on, but I heard he was an absolute beast out there.

  • Will compete for a spot soon I think. Within 3 years.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • Don't recall seeing Mangiro vs. Clowney personally. This game was pretty much interior vs. interior and ends vs. tackles. Clowney is a manchild though. Daquan Bowers 2.0. A South Carolina hs coach told me Clowney is better.

Yeah, I've heard that Clowney is the best DL prospect of the last 10 years. I don't know how accurate that is because I have never seen him play, but I also haven't seen anyone really dispute that claim.

That would certainly be some high praise. He's my No. 1 guy overall this year, hands down. For those that saw Bowers' tape in high school and his play in college know what kind of compliment that is. I know they've tried, but I would like to see Penn State get back into South Carolina because there is a lot of talent down there.
