Am I reading too much not this?

  • I hit the OSU board and saw a thread pertaining to stadium ranks by some guy who apparently lives in Ann Arbor (bias identified). The Buckeye fans of course were fired up with a rank of 27 (I agree that they should be) but the Penn State comments and photo caught my attention let alone the rank of 28. The photo shows a half empty stadium followed up with matter of fact statistics about where the stadium is locatedit and how many people it holds. Seemed to me as an opportunity to get a dig in on us, not to mention we ranked behind Air Force, Army and Indiana. Anyways, thought we could rank our top 10 game day experiences by team. Fans, level of difficulty for visitors, tailgate, atmosphere, etc. I have not been to enough places to truly compare, but thought maybe others could contribute.

  • Yes, I wouldn't take it too personally. Seems a lot of them are based off tradition alone. No way that Army, Arkansas, Air Force, Mississippi, Indiana, USC, Colorado, N.C. State are better than the Beav. I'm sure there are others as well, but it's biased from the start when done by a Michigan guy.

    I'm not a V.T. fan, but he has them at #50. I'm pretty sure that experiencing a game day atmosphere in Blacksburg would be more enjoyable than Marshall. Garbage article.

  • I thought each of his comments was fair. If I were to quibble with the ranking system, it would be that he seems to weight food & beverage and access the same as atmosphere and fans. The shout out to the student section passion was great but the stadium can seem dead on an 11 am non-conf creampuff game.

  • That was a waste of my time. Ann Arbor is not exciting at all. Way smaller than you can imagine. The seats are tight allowing for the large number of tickets. Ohio State has a good(wild) crowd and would rank high on my list. Texas and USC have never been considered great game day places. Night game at beaver stadium has to be near top. LSU and Bama night games are at the top. ND is not close. Maybe a Pitt night game at one of the local high schools is overlooked and should be considered for a top spot.

  • for tailgating, PSU is a clear #1 - both from what I've experienced personally and what I've been told - in the big 10. Of all the places I've been, the only place that comes close is the Rose Bowl. I will say Indiana is pretty underrated.

  • Oklahoma at #73 ... Indiana at #14. West Virginia #96 and Florida Atlantic at #92.

    They have Pitt ahead of Baylor, Virginia, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.

    It's a complete BS ranking.

    If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • Nothing to worry about. We all know that we have the largest high school quality stadium in the country that happens to house the finest grass field in the country. The scoreboards need replaced (will happen next year), the press box needs to be replaced (who knows why that will happen) and the facility is in need of some kind of facade. It's a franken-stadium that does a great job at doing what it is intended for... holding 100k+ fans, providing a great surface to play on and doing it relatively cheap.

  • Went to ND back when we played them and was not impressed by the game day experience, really at all. The fans are polite and the campus was kinda cool - but the tailgating was mediocre, and the bars are all in shopping plazas.

    Perhaps it's just not my cup of tea. I've been to Ohio State, Purdue, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northwestern for my other away trips and I would rank ND dead last. I don't have any bones to pick with them, just my 2 cents.

  • Every sensible article you read by unbiased and neutral evaluators has Beaver Stadium in the Top 5-10 for capacity and gameday atmosphere. The usual top ten that I have seen, I will list below.

    The Shoe--Ohio State
    The Big House---Michigan
    Beaver Stadium---PSU
    Neyland Stadium---Tennessee
    Tiger Stadium---LSU
    Lane Stadium---VTech (Don't underestimate Lane Stadium, its a phenomenal gameday atmosphere, I laughed at it until I went to a night game there, it was electric)
    Sanford Stadium--UGA
    Autzen Stadium---Oregon
    Bryant Denney---Alabama
    Ben H. Griffin "The Swamp"---Florida (fun fact, they let students workout in the stadium in the offseason, running bleachers, the track, playing catch on the field, etc as long as there's no practice in session. they also hold open practices at times so students can watch, typically relaxed practices for entertainment)

    Generally on the outskirts of that include or HM for top ten include:
    Camp Randall at Wisconsin---awesome gameday atmosphere's, I've been there before myself
    Nebraska
    FSU
    WVU
    and every other awesome program with awesome fanbases.

    The only reason the top ten is always a mixture of those ten I listed above and intermingle are because of consistency in tradition, attendance, and gameday atmosphere. They consistenly show up and put on a show every single gameday.

  • FYI I know a guy who writes for Stadium Journey. Don't pay any attention to this. They rated this all by the one game one of their staff went too.

    I've been to plenty of college football games at many college football stadiums and there are very few that rival Penn State for a big game. Don't listen to crackpot Bleacher Report type rankings.

    Kyle Field might be my favorite. Tailgating may not be as large as PSU, but I counted at least 5 pig roasts when I was there. Combine that with cowboy boots and mini-skirts and you have a lot of win. Games are unreal there, place will be rockin the next few years.
