There is no way in hell you give him more money when you gave him 4 more years on top of a 5 year deal before he ever played a game. If he leaves, thank him and take the 18 million. There isn't crap you can do about it if he leaves. From what someone else was saying, this is more of a PR move for BOB/PSU than anything else. He isn't going anywhere and this will keep PSU relevant while everyone is playing in bowl games. It could be utter BS or it could be he is the smartest man in the room toying with the media. Time will tell, but a 9 year deal for any HC is pretty damn good. He has job and financial security so it comes down to his family being happy IMO.

And if I recall...aren't his boys in the 8-10 year old range? 9 years gets both of them right through HS and ready to move on elsewhere with their own lives. That puts O'brien at about 51 or 52 years old. Plenty of experience and time at that point where he could move onto the NFL if desired and still have a solid NFL coaching career after that.

From today - not exactly what we wanted to hear....I understand i think it is highly doubtful O'Brien leaves - but the more and more this drags on without a statement - my concern grows.

I just wish he would solidify things with his current team because it has to affect their thinking as well. Remember 5-6 weeks ago they asked AROB about going to another team and he was adamant about saying he wouldn't listen....now he seems totally open. I wonder what changed.

The collegian one sounds a little better.

Collegian Footblog ‏@psufootblog Allen Robinson said he's expecting Bill O'Brien to be back next season, but he's not sure what he's going to do.

Audrey Snyder ‏@audsnyder4 "I’m not sure what’s in the future to come with Coach O’Brien and next year," Robinson said

Maybe I not reading this statement right , but I think AL is saying he is not sure BO'B will be back, not him.

My bet is that O'Brien and Joyner are planning an announcement of some kind during next week as a means to keep positive PSU energy after the season.

O'brein is staying and Joyner is gone. Hot Damn

  • People let's calm down and quit "The Sky is falling" attitude. I think BO'B is just F"in with the press.

That said, another drawing conclusions thread on this board when there is nothing to see here. Again, people can start worrying when we find out he is interviewing somewhere else, IF he does - regardless what the rumor mill says.

Mark it down... Hamilton and I are in full agreement on this.

You guys are all going to die early. Quit worrying about some other team coming in and taking a one year coach with a 7-5 or 8-4 record and paying 10-18 million just to take him off our hands (not sure if the buyout is for the original contract length or the full 9 years). The chances of that happening are slim.

BOB is vying for a bump in pay. It's as simple as that.

Exactly. Get a grip folks. I heard from a very reliable source that 18K is the buyout. Although I could always be wrong, I don't think BoB is going anywhere. I think that everyone needs to calm down, remain positive, support the team and the program...and quit the worrying, it is not productive and actually fans the flames.

I would agree, with all of that said, that it would be VERY helpful if BoB would come out with a reaffirming statement that will solidify the recruiting process and put doubts to rest..

Sorry again... But once more, you fail to catch the point: Saying he's staying immediately after Wiscy DOES NOTHING FROM A PR PERSPECTIVE. Other teams will be in the news for "OMG have you seen the matchup of WVU's defense against whale shi!t rolling up a hill? Can WVU stop it?" to "LMFAO LSU is totes gonna beat Boise," etc. Then, they play games. Meanwhile, PSU sits at home.

How do you keep yourself in the news, AND ensure that all those kids watching those games view PSU in a positive light? Ensure that EVERY halftime show has the next "Who is going to pony up the cash for BOB, the hottest coach alive?" So, to your point about saying it now or after Wiscy, there is LITERALLY no functional difference except to quiet down the internet rumor mill... and will saying anything either way do that? Absolutely not.

To take a paraphrase from some coach... might have been Joe: "Why should I have to assure you guys I'm staying - I still have a contract." BOB has a massive contract. If people are too stupid to read it and want to put him in a positive light, all the better.

Now, if he's leaving, a classy guy would announce it ASAP. BOB strikes me as this kind of guy. So worst case scenario is actually an announcement after Wiscy, in my mind.

You are entitled to your opinion. I think that after Wiscy he is grinding non-stop. No time to play media games. It's time to get everyone that you view as important to either stay or commit- new commits.

if he is messing with the press and creating a stir that puts doubts in the minds of current players and recruits alike, he's an idiot unless he is personally calling every player and their parents letting them in on his "joke".

Dude... it takes less time to say nothing than to say anything. How is he "grinding non-stop" if he stops to answer stupid media questions when he could be... I dunno, out recruiting?

  • I think he's negotiating on his staff's behalf. Bob is locked in to 9 years if he wants it....what about the staff? Have they been compensated for the impact of the sanctions?

He started giving more public kudos & exposure to his staff over the past month or so.

Feels like a fluid situation....but I'm hoping that not only Bob gets locked in, but the rest of the coaches as well.

When BOB was signed to a contract, the rumors were that he wasn't paid very much in salary because he wanted $$$ available for his staff.

Considering Stan Hixon was hired away from the Buffalo Bills (granted, not a big money team), I think that tells you it could very well be true.

Perception matters. Recruits read. This is not the time to get cute with the media. At all.

Recruits can also call him up. So can the players up there. He could also say no way in hell am I leaving and be gone the next day. It sounds to me that the fans/alums are the ones needing some reassurance right now. Coaches bail in the middle of the night and PSU is now in that rat race. Only time will tell with him. You just have to have faith in the man himself and what he stated when he was hired. It may have been coach speek, maybe he is a better actor than we know? I don't see any current recruits like Hack or AB running around scared....kind of keeps you thinking they know he will be there.

  • I don't think he's going anywhere. Im just saying that the garbage that the media is pursuing could mess w some recruits. All I am saying is that I expect him to crush this after the Wiscy game. Then there is no story and he will grind away.

It only messes with the recruits if they don't trust him or know what is going on which could be bad. PSU has very few spots left and a little birdie elsewhere stated the media attention he gets is good and he knows this. If the guy is being pursued for other jobs or even being mentioned with no intention of going, it may also have a few recruits next year looking at playing for him. Do the kids coming up want to play for a highly sought after HC or just some guy that nobody cares about? Don't shoot the messenger here as it could be 100% false and made up, just passing it along. I doubt he goes anywhere and I doubt he demands a raise in year #1. I forget the exact wording, but it was something like..."Don't worry about what you are hearing. He is the smartest guy in the room and knows exactly what he is doing." We'll see how accurate that is in the next month or so.

  • BOB hasn't reached the stage of "messing with the media" sports fans. It takes a while to get to that point, aka JoePa.

BOB obviously doesn't want to/can't say something that can later be called a bold face lie. He's tap dancing on the question now. Look at it from HIS persepective, not yours. Over the next four years it's highly unlikely he'll be much more marketable than he is after this one season. Maybe by the time Hackenberg hits his second or third year starting the WL record will be as good or better. The team can win no championship that one can point to, even if it goes undefeated. So as far as accomplishment, what BOB says about coming to and playing at Penn State is true. As far as coaching, head coaching, not so much. If you look out a few years it's rather bleak in terms of accomplishing some goals. If he has any doubts about anything, they'll be magnified by the reality of the sanctions. He also has a family to consider and their needs. In the end it all comes down to who's on the other side of the offer. He's not leaving to coach college. If an NFL team, with reasonably solid ownership comes calling with a mega deal, it would be difficult to turn down when weighed against what he's now up against with Penn State. Keep sandusky in mind this holiday season fellas. He started all this.

Yeah, you have a point. I am just worried about the new guys on the radar. They don't know him that well, they are just forming a relationship... But I guess there could be a plus side, like you said. I just find it annoying because I know he's not going anywhere, despite the media blowhards (and spulv) saying that he's as good as gone. Just irks me ya know?
