Allen Robinson Quote

  • My bet is that O'Brien and Joyner are planning an announcement of some kind during next week as a means to keep positive PSU energy after the season.

At least to me it's pretty clear what's going on. O'Brien is in the final week of the season. He's focused on playing Wisconsin. All of this attention scares way to many people, when in reality it's one of the best things that could happen for PSU. Why?

First, it's very very unlikely BOB is going anywhere. His buyout is huge at 18M. He voluntarily signed his extension that kicked in after the sanctions. That extension pretty much locked him into PSU (because of the buyout), which he obviously knew would happen. This is obvious evidence he's not interested in moving on.

Here's why it's good. Realize the amount of press BOB is getting as a disireable coach. According to the news outlets, half the NFL wants 'our' coach and the most desireable colleges with openings want 'our' coach. That's REALLY good for the profile of our coach, who when hired was considered relatively unknown. Everyone knows him now for multiple reasons.

Next, he'll eventually come out and say he's staying at PSU because he's loyal to the SCHOOL and the PLAYERS!! He'll swear his loyalty to his players and through that send a significant message to his players. He was confronted with some potential BIGTIME options and choose to stay and coach them. His players will be faced with similar decisions and hope this helps influence their choices.

BOB has a ton of leverage, that he can either use for HIMSELF....or PSU football. I think he's using that leverage for PSU football as well as just choosing not to answer dumb questions.

If I choose not to use logic I'll at least give BOB's character enough credit to realize he wouldnt be promising recruits he'll be around for their career only to walk away after year one.

This is what I am hoping for and is best case scenerio. but the thing is, no one knows BOB's intentions except BOB and his family. I really could see this, and if he comes out and crushes all the rumors after Wiscy, then I will breathe a lot easier, and this best case scenerio is likely to become a reality. But, at this point we don't know. Which is why I think that Wiscy presser will be the most watched presser in PSU history...

    Excellent post strayer....

Makes a ton of sense and i hope that is how it plays out....

He DID sign that extension AFTER the sanctions came down, so he knows what he's doing.

I hope so, but I have seen Joyner's PR tactics, and I must say at this point you may be giving him too much credit... But if he does this, it would be genius. I just hope he is as smart as he thinks he is...

  • I am going by what BoB says. He wont give a straight answer, and now, his players (see Robinson quote) are starting to question his intentions. Media or no media, coach could end all of this with a simple statement.

There is no doubt that he deserve more money with the changing circumstances, but I don't think he should get it until after year 2... And I don't think that he needs to or should play this negotiating tactic out for that long. Like I said, crush it after Wiscy.

There is no way in hell you give him more money when you gave him 4 more years on top of a 5 year deal before he ever played a game. If he leaves, thank him and take the 18 million. There isn't crap you can do about it if he leaves. From what someone else was saying, this is more of a PR move for BOB/PSU than anything else. He isn't going anywhere and this will keep PSU relevant while everyone is playing in bowl games. It could be utter BS or it could be he is the smartest man in the room toying with the media. Time will tell, but a 9 year deal for any HC is pretty damn good. He has job and financial security so it comes down to his family being happy IMO.

You think he's really going to press the issue that hard after only 1 year?

I don't think that "press" is the right way to put it. Bill's a smart guy. An Ivy league guy. He knows that he will never have this kind of artificial leverage again.

If you are really worried about him leaving, think about how emotional he gets at times when talking about his players. Think about how one of the perks of him being at PSU is him being able to spend more time with his family. Think about the difficulties that come with moving his disabled son. Personally, I think he likes the NE and doesn't want to move south (that is just my take).

I would only worry about NE NFL jobs with BOB, and not for a couple of years. JMO.

Contracts are always negotiable. And if he has a similar season next year (8-4 or 9-3), he may start asking for a raise (if this move isn't at least in part a ploy for more $$$ already). This job is a lot different than when he took it over, and while the extra years give him security, you have to think that he will ask for a raise in a few years. Maybe not 2 years like I originally said, but in year 3 or 4 you have to start to think that he will ask for a raise. And if we win, he will deserve it. He would deserve to be in the top 3 in the Big Ten as far as salaries go... And according to the other post listed as such, he is more like around number 6 right now... Which is understandable, because he is a brand new HC. But after a few years, if he is successful, he could totally get a raise man.

I agree with all of that, but I just think he comes out and crushes the rumor after Wiscy- for all of those reasons that you mentioned yourself. He doesn't need to play the media for personal gain after Wiscy. He needs to build his team before the recruiting storm hits (for his own players). And that storm is coming right after Wiscy. He needs to be totally focused on his roster, not his contract IMO. The 2013-14 roster will impact his future salary, and I think he knows this.

again, no idea where people are thinking ARob is open. don't see one quote with him saying that.

Agreed. It feels a lot like the press trying to generate a story where none exists. Remember the talking heads on ESPN as well as Farrell trying to stir the pot with Hack? It was absolutely killing them that a can't miss prospect was staying loyal to PSU. I remember watching some stupid ESPN Show and Luginbill was convinced that he couldn't possibly stay committed when other "bigger" schools started sniffing around. The press are seeing this great year by Robinson and assuming he will follow in the footsteps of Redd and Brown. Maybe he will but to this point nothing he has actually said leads me to believe it.

  • I agree with the poster who mentioned that BOB must be telling the players/recruits a different story than he is telling the media. Maybe he's leveraging a new contract...who knows. Don't you think we'd have heard rumblings of our 2013 kids looking around if they didn't fully trust BOB would be back next year? They all basically said they are staying with us because of him and his staff and if all they are hearing is indecision you would have to bet they would be looking into backup plans. Just doesn't seem like anything more than a Belichek-ian media runaround to me.

Agree again. But the point here isn't the commits... But the 8 slots that you are trying to fill. Coaches lie all the time. So when he tells a recruit that isn't commited to us, "Im here for the long haul" and then turns around and gives the answer that he has been in the press, and the kid reads it or hears it on TV (as a 17 yr old mind you), the effect isn't good... Even if the kid flat out asks after he heard the story, it could still mess with his head. We arent talking about Hack and AB here, we are talking about Hytche, or the NT from Bama, or DaeSean Hamilton...

We all believe that BOB is a loyal guy that is going to stay, but who knows what a 17 year old thinks. And no one thought Redd would leave before the season either. Again, I don't think BOB is going anywhere and I think the media is just searching for a story. But I will reiterate again, he needs to crush this after Wiscy and start recruiting guys to stay and go full tilt on recruiting til signing day. The first few months after the season are huge. We need him on a full sprint, not giving the same ammo to the media after the season for them to run amuck with. I think there is no way he goes anywhere, but we need almost all of the team to stay too, and finish this class strong. Just like he has been narrowly focused on each opponent each week during the season, he needs to be narrowly focused on keeping this team together and making it even stronger after the season. Not his contract, not avoiding the question. Go all in and work your ass off BOB. I think he will, but I will be glued to my laptop waiting for the video of the Wiscy presser just to make sure.

  • I love BOB, but he is totally F'ing this up. If he wants to renegotiate his contract -- FINE -- but do it in a way that does not cause any more harm to PSU. He could have simply stated, "I'm not taking or responding to any media questions regarding my contract or career until after the season." Yet, he equivocated and it has caused a mini shit storm. Not a pro-PSU move IMO.

Agree with this. Plus, IF he is using this as leverage, I would bet its for his assistants as well. It might be tougher to keep a few of them. There are quite a few other things going on this week, including the additions to the league, Mauti's injury, the last game for this year's team and seniors, not to mention the normal day-to-day things. I really don't think the recruits or current players have really had all that much time to sit around and ponder what he's going to do next year. Now fans.....that's a different story! And I think arobs comment is being misinterpreted. I really don't think coach O'Brien would say anything to the players about next year for him or them....i would guess that he's keeping them focused on Saturday and what they need to do to win. He seems like a no-nonsense kind of guy.

  • Even if OB says "No, I am not leaving"...the stories will not go away. The media will still keep on asking and using their "sources" to tie him to new jobs.

  • We are getting dangerously close to last year's territory where we try to interpret every little thing for clues. This season is not over yet, and BOB is trying to keep the focus on the game...especially for the seniors. The only person who knows what they are going to do is BOB and he is not going to reveal anything. Let's enjoy the final game of what has been a incredible season and worry about all the other stuff after that.

Why would you think that he wouldn't do what Saban did? Maybe not now with no real HC experience except this year... But they are both from the BB tree, and are pretty close. BOB is going to do what's best for his career. Right now, staying and building this is best. But coaches lie all the time. I understand whats going on (vying for a raise), but I still am frustrated... But I get it.

You don't get it. The point is, he could still come out and say, "yes, I'm here," and that could be a lie. Chill out, don't get your panties in a bunch, etc. You can't control it, don't stress until something happens one way or another.

Sorry to pick on you, but like 70% of the posts on this thread are yours. You really need to chill out. It's not about you, and you can't get everything you want now. Your attitude is the epitome of the internet generation (says a 28 year old). Stuff doesn't always need to happen in public. Remember Zwinak never made a public statement about staying? See Strayer's comment above. It demonstrates a perfectly legitimate strategy that BOB could be employing, and in such a case, jumping the gun like you'd like him to actually weakens his position with 2014 recruits.

he has a press conference today, right?? should be very interesting

but you know what i mean about AROB, 6 weeks ago he was totally solid and PSU has only showcased him more...but now he is unsure - which tells me very slim chance he stays

Need no further to look than Justin Brown and SIlas Redd. I mean seriously. What reason is there to leave?

He is clearly our #1. He is clearly getting showcased and becoming "famous" from the offense here. He will be that #1 for as long as he is here, in a great offense.

If O'brien stays...it would be idiotic for him to leave.

With that said...maybe he's just doing what we hope Obrien is doing..and that's messing with the media.

Sorry again... But once more, you fail to catch the point: Saying he's staying immediately after Wiscy DOES NOTHING FROM A PR PERSPECTIVE. Other teams will be in the news for "OMG have you seen the matchup of WVU's defense against whale shi!t rolling up a hill? Can WVU stop it?" to "LMFAO LSU is totes gonna beat Boise," etc. Then, they play games. Meanwhile, PSU sits at home.

How do you keep yourself in the news, AND ensure that all those kids watching those games view PSU in a positive light? Ensure that EVERY halftime show has the next "Who is going to pony up the cash for BOB, the hottest coach alive?" So, to your point about saying it now or after Wiscy, there is LITERALLY no functional difference except to quiet down the internet rumor mill... and will saying anything either way do that? Absolutely not.

To take a paraphrase from some coach... might have been Joe: "Why should I have to assure you guys I'm staying - I still have a contract." BOB has a massive contract. If people are too stupid to read it and want to put him in a positive light, all the better.

Now, if he's leaving, a classy guy would announce it ASAP. BOB strikes me as this kind of guy. So worst case scenario is actually an announcement after Wiscy, in my mind.

Yeah, it does. I agree. I don't think he's going anywhere. My point is that he is allowing doubt to creep into the minds of recruits, which needs to be crushed after Wiscy. That's all. It's just not good to be wishy washy. I understand why he's doing it now and thinks he can afford to. But the next presser, crush it. And have a team meeting that next week and assure them that you are staying. Hell bring back the Charlie Mike guy to have a pep talk again for any kids on the fence. The process starts immediately after that clock reads 00:00

Unless he's telling recruits..."Listen, I'll be here. Don't listen to anything the media says or what I say to them right now. They don't need to know anything about our team other than our next opponent and our last game."
