Alabama backup QB Phil Sims transferring to...

  • ......Virginia. Lots of chatter from Alabama/UVA twitter handles about it.

I know this was discussed in another thread but I can't remember which one so I figured I'd start one on the top since we play UVA in a home and home starting this year.

I believe that has yet to be determined.

How would he be eligible this year? I'm just asking out of curiosity, because the rule as far as I know is that unless you do the Russell Wilson thing, you sit out a year.

Technically speaking who wouldn't be able to but I thought I saw that he would put in a petition to try and maintain eligibility for the 2012 season so he doesn't have to sit out the year.

Too many kids abuse that NCAA rule about putting in the waiver to play immediately. The rule was put in for kids that transfer back closer to home because of an illness to a close family member. I don't see how the Simms things fits that.

Pretty sure he was requesting a waiver due to family issues (not sure if health or whatever).

Pretty sure that is the reason for his transfer.

That is the reason he's apparently trying to give. I'm sure the fact that he sees virtually zero playing time in front of him there at Bama has nothing to do with it.

I wonder if he would still transfer due to family issues if he were the starter at Bama!

Well, Alabama immediately granted him the release and is apparently willing to support the waiver of sit-out year. I can't think they'd do that if it were strictly a PT issue.

    Huh? Not sure I follow.

Saban wants the scholarship freed up ASAP. Why wouldn't he/they grant release immediately and support the waiver?

Supporting the release gains the scholarship. My point is that if it were a PT issue, why would Saban support the waiver of sitting out a year? Wouldn't he punish the kid for leaving and make him sit out a year? Bama's QB depth is awfully thin now. They have no capable back-up. IMO...there's no way Saban would short himself like that AND support a waiver which eliminated consequences for the departing player unless a legitimate family issue were involved.

+1. Saban has to create the image of a benevolent figure. He will get rid of a kid when it benefits the program but will help him get wherever he wants to go.

I dont believe getting rid of Sims was to benefit the program, or in the best interest of the program.

Saban granted the release, and supported the hardship waiver that would allow Sims to play right away.

He could have granted the release and not have to support the waiver, but he did, and as diddy said, I can't see Saban supporting that waiver if it was not legit.

    Exactly.

  • U guys demonize Saban too much. Sounds like he's trying to help this kid out tbh. He also seems to do over signing as right as possible by abusing the medical rules rather than just screwing over the kids.

So it's cool because he exploits only part of the oversigning rule, gotcha. Nick Saban, the Robin Hood of CFB.

  • The only problem I have with over signing is a kid getting screwed out of an education. Saban doesn't really do that from what I've seen.

  • Fwiw, the issue with Simms' family has been going on for awhile. He has been outspoken about wanting to stay there. Now I am not saying part of it isn't because he may not start, because that can always be part of it, but it has been a situation that has been ongoing.

Benefit of the program? Without Sims, they have a 200 pound, not very mobile QB playing in the SEC. The only one they have behind McCarron is Phillip Ely, who was a True freshman last year, and may not be physically ready to face SEC defenses.

They're in trouble without Sims. Think of PSU when Devlin left, and left us with a true freshman in Newsome and a walking named McGloin as our only QBs. We completely cut out the read-option and QB draws because of that. You might see Alabama a little more conservative with their QB protections to protect McCarron, rather than air out completely like Saban usually did with 2nd year starters.

    Absolutely.

Bama would certainly be better off still having Sims on the team.
