AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN THE B1G?

  • I used to think Adam Rittenberg was a pretty decent sports writer. Also see that ESPN has three negative articles on PSU on their NCAA FB "headlines" today. Got to keep that negative light on PSU there at ESPIN. pukeface

Big Ten lacks coaching diversity -- College Football - ESPN

The Big Ten once led the way in providing opportunities for coaches of color. But while the numbers of black and minority coaches have risen nationally, the Big Ten has fallen behind.

  • Well, at least PSU interviewed one known minority for its job. OSU didn't even try.

And the OSU AD is a minority who is quoted in the article? confused

Yawn. I'm sure you missed the 2 positive pieces they ran yesterday too.

  • one of things I wish Coach BO'B had done was bring in one or two more African-American assistant coaches. But obviously this wasn't anything intentional. But in the long run, I think you just need to wait for more black coaches to grow through the ranks of assistants, after being players.

Why should they have? They knew who they wanted and got him. Why should they waste everyones time, to make Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson happy?

  • This thread cannot possibly lead to good things. I've researched diversity in college sports for the past year and I won't get involved in this thread, but for those who do, please keep it tasteful.

All I will say is the issue is not nearly as simple people think.

  • We don't have any women coaches either, so I guess we're sexist too.

I remember back in the '80's there was a big debate whether blacks were smart enough to play quarterback. Then Doug Williams won a Super Bowl with the Redskins and eventually that all went away. All this business about black coaches will eventually go away too. Ten years ago it was a big issue in the NFL. Now it's common practice. Eventually that will trickle down to the NCAA, but right now universities are run by rich white baby boomers who don't like to give millions of dollars to people that don't share their culture and thinking.

I firmly believe this country will get over racism as an issue in another 30 or 40 years. The baby boomers drive all this crap. They are the ones that grew up during the civil rights movement and have a paranoia about being labeled a racist. Some people use that paranoia to twist arms into getting what they want. ESPN pushes it to drive ratings. But eventually that will go away. Gen X and the millenials aren't obsessed with race. It just doesn't matter to them.

I think our staff has a really good mix of everything (race, age, experience, NFL, college, home states, etc.)

My post wasn't meant to be as critical as it sounded. But one of my random theories is that with the majority of players being African-American, having a lot of African-American coaches around, who have had a lot of experience in life, is great to have as mentors to these kids. There's so much bull-crap out there with the media, sometimes going overboard with PC, and then you have other times where there is real racism that gets under-reported...it has to be tough, and to have a coach who can cut through all the BS and hype, and just offer sound guidance, is a great thing to have.

It's just finding those coaches, and that is a matter of patience. I wish the media would be patient with these things. Somethings can't be corrected overnight, and the process has to be respected. We're on the right track though.

We have a good group of posters and mods here, I think we can discuss this in a positive manner. It's a highly nuanced issue, that doesn't get the nuance it deserves, as evidenced by the article in the OP.

Won't even take that long. Once the zombie apocalypse starts this December, it'll be humans versus them.

So everyone should bottle up their hatred and save it for the end of the Mayan calendar in a few months!

I found posting the article relevant because PSU has the most recent B1G football coaching hire. I also believe that Adam Rittengerg's article is probably something he should have written ten years ago. This country is much farther along when it comes to race relations than people think. Unfortunately, there are some as of late who are rekindling the flames for political purposes. Enjoy your weekends!

and hiring someone just because they're white is equally dumb. B10 teams need to win games and if a minority coach gives them the best shot then they are going to hire that guy. SMH

I guess he can speak for himself, but I don't think Hamilton was saying that they necessarily should have. I think Hamilton was simply posting in response to the article -- Which apparently notes, as a bad thing, the lack of African American coaches in the B-10.

With that said, the "Rooney Rule" in the NFL has been great. At least it was for my Steelers -- Who "knew who they wanted" (a particular white coach) but changed their mind after they interviewed Mike Tomlin (an African American coach). And I'm not saying the NCAA should adopt it. That's up to them. But it's not a bad concept, that has made plenty of people happy who are NOT Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson fans.

  • As one of the few black people on this site... Gotta say, this article is true... It's concerning... The NFL is lightyears ahead of college as far as coaching opportunities go. Still an "old boys" club by and large... Sorry, but that is the truth. Not even debatable...

  • I think Rittenberg needs to clarify about African-American HEAD coaches, not just coaches. He keeps saying "A-A coaches" when I think he meant A-A head coaches.

Race should never be a factor in a decision, period. Whether negatively or positively.
