ACC or Big Ten

  • Just throwing this out there: Are we a better fit for the ACC or the Big Ten?

    I realize that my knowledge of the financial stuff is lacking, but it seems like the ACC would be a better place for us. Academically, it isn't bad - not SEC, and there are some natural rivals. UVA, Va Tech, Pitt, Syracuse, BC seem like better rivals to me. Less travel, plus all the PSU alum on the east coast would benefit as well. Also ND looks like they're going there as well.

    Not sure if the ACC is even interested, but I for one would like to see it.

    Thoughts??

    but we will never leave the big Ten without being kicked out for our "football" culture......

  • ACC is the only conference (aside from Ivy League) that has a claim to matching the Big Ten academically. I count Chicago as one of ours (due to the academic group we're all part of), but if you don't, ACC's average is actually like 1 rank better than Big Ten.

    I agree. I think geographically we are perfect for the ACC but with the money we get from the B1G, there's no way we leave unless we're booted.

    Athletically (natural rivals) and mindset wise, ACC. Academically, Big Ten. I can't imagine many people enjoy playing the Big Ten schools we do when we could be playing all of our old rivals that have now migrated to the ACC. None of that matters, though. Money is the great decider. Right now, the Big Ten blows the ACC away. But I have to wonder what kind of a contract an ACC with Notre Dame and Penn State would be able to bring in?

  • Big Ten threw us under the bus, offered us no support. I'm done with them. I would move to the ACC in a heartbeat.

    Ideally, I would rather have PSU in an east coast conference that includes the likes of Pitt and VT and NC State and Rutgers and BC and such, and develop some great regional rivalries. I'm not a huge fan of these leagues sucking up teams located thousands of miles from where their regional base is.

    I don't like Penn State being treated as second class behind osu and michigan. That will never change in the big10.
    Moneywise, the big10 is the better fit currently. I think in the future the ACC would be better. If Penn St joined, the next tv contract for the ACC would be much larger. The entire east coast market would be owned by the ACC network. I can't speak to research dollars, I have no idea. Take money out of it though, and it's ACC all the way.

  • I've always been a supporter of the move to the ACC. The ACC schools line up very well with the BIG schools and the road trips are much nicer.

  • This question seems oddly familiar (probably cause it's asked every month). Answer is still the B1G. Answer will continue to be the B1G for the foreseeable future. Money is the factor. If the gap in money every changes, come talk to me. The university is better off in the B1G right now and it's not even a question (but that won't stop people from asking many more times).

    Money isn't your biggest concern, but it sure is for the university. The university is better off in the B1G. The money will not be close if they make 6 ACC networks.

    The research money trumps the athletic money. We are a premiere research institution, we belong with schools like Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio State, Purdue and Minnesota. We are not a premiere social science, law or business institution, we don't belong with schools like Duke, UNC, Wake Forrest, Syracuse or UVA. The only schools we match up with well in the ACC are NC State and Georgia Tech (and maybe Va Tech, although they're not a premiere research institution). Science and engineering should trump athletic frustration.

    This will be a key argument within the next 10 years. The Rust Belt is dying a slow, painful death. The Sun Belt has been the opposite for some time now. And the Northeast will always be heavily populated. It is no small coincidence that the Big Ten has been declining in football as the region it resides in mirrors that in industry and population. The Big Ten's media value will continue to decline as the years pass by.

  • ACC is a better fit to help this staff's increased recruiting efforts in Georgia, Florida, and re-securing New England etc.

    The B1G didn't really give us that national recruiting impact everyone expected to happen.

    Was this after the Freeh Report?

    What's the proof of this? Not saying I doubt it, but I'd love to see a source.
