A Few Observations

  • Couldnt go yesterday, family stuff and work. Anyway....just wanted to mention a few things I havent seen discussed yet:

    1. Attendance: couldn't help but notice that it continues to dwindle a bit. Last week I was there dispute the 98k they announced...had to be more like 90 and yesterday looked like low 80's. We always have bare spots in the corners for these type of games, but man was it sparse....first time I personally have seen this many open seats.

    2. Announcers for the game: they were embarrassing and pathetic. Their football IQ was horrible, they made no sense on quite a few occasions...and then they went on this thing where they said "Bill O'brien knows why we are under the sanctions, he understands how we got here...blah blah" for about 15 minutes that made me want to puke. It wasnt that they were bad either way...they just sucked really bad....i wouldnt pay those guys a dime to announce another college football game. Here's another great example...the one guy puts up our remaining schedule after going on this "penn state can win the leaders division" rant. He says we lose to Northwestern because he "cant see us winning that game" and also I think it was Purdue...yet went on to say that we beat wisky and can beat OSU and Nebraska...these are "pick em's". Really

    3. Game itself was blah to me, very surprised our o-line got beat so much on the corners against temple but this is being discussed elsewhere. McGloin had a little bit of his gunslinger mentality today and I thought played his worst game. But the kid does make some very nice reads and plays, thew pump fake on the slant (because it got jumped) then pass to robinson was all mcgloin.

I still cant get over our cb's refusing to get their heads around....i mean it happens on every deep ball. On replay, Davis didnt appear to interfere with the reciever, but he never turns his head and was asking for the flag. Same with Morris...kid makes some nice plays, but i wouldnt argue with an official for flagging him, he wasnt turning either. Great game by front 7.

  • I "mute" the TV sound and listen to Steve and Jack on the radio! Been doing it for years.

Davis did interfere. I thought Morris played a pretty good game TBH on the outside.

" Game itself was blah to me," Did you see last years Temple game? PSU put up almost 500 yds of total offense yesterday. After watching years of blah, I love this team.

I agree - not sure what was blah about it. Sure, we failed to score and left a lot of points on the field, but there's plenty of non-blah about this game.

  • I thought the interior line did very well. Farrell played ok at LT, but is definitly a notch below Smith, and it's obvious when he's faced with a speed rush, or a counter move(he just doesn't have very quick feet) The RT situation is a mess. They look good in run blocking, but very poor in pass pro. It was sad to see Gress get beaten off the snap so badly by the Temple DE(this should never happen - especially when we know the snap count, and they don't) Urschel is finally starting to play a bit better after a shaky first two games. Diff is coming around, but still has his struggles at time(BTW - he's going to be good).

  • I thought this was mcgloins best game not his worst. Managed the offense well today. May 2-3 bad decisions but overall I think he is getting better week by week. I worry about how physical our corners are when Davis is in there. Hard time dealing with the bubble and flanker screens. We will see that a lot next week against Illinois.

I used to do this when Fran and George were calling the game. At some point the radio and tv were no longer in synch. I will have to try this next week.

TV and radio aren't in sync. There's like a 3-5 second delay.

I like watching it with the delay... gives me the opportunity to focus on things before they happen.

  • I think the weather had a lot to do with crowd size. Not a good excuse, but definitely contributed. And I was very surprised by little temple crowd.

But crowd was.very loud - especially when refs kept throwing questionable flags. That made crowd just get louder and more into game.

  • Maybe the university should reconsider the prices for the empty seats that remain. Last minute I decided (more like the girlfriend) that 4 of her family were coming up. Tried to get 6 seats together and i knew that the game was not sold out. We went to PSU ticket office and got 6 together in either EB or EC and they wanted in total ....... $960.

Ridiculous, we took a different route and got 4 and 2. Maybe the university should reconsider the difference between paying 960 dollars or sitting at home and watching on TV.......

  • Same thing happened to me for Navy game. Ended up going secondary market for half the cost.
