Five young, promising Penn State football players to watch for

With just a week of spring football remaining, we polled some Penn State football stars about which young guns had the best spring.

It's funny that for a lot of fans he was the after-thought WR in that class, behind Belton and Zanny.

But I remember Allen Trieu praising him as someone that would surprise people and that he was an amazing athlete (big-time vertical leap). I think O'Brien's offense is going to put a premium on running very tight routes, especially with the freelance aspect of changing routes based on changes in the coverage. Don't be surprised if he surpasses a few older kids and is a consistent contributor this season.

  • Very happy for Robinson. He was do darn young coming out of HS that I think people didn't realize he had so much growing to do. It was obvious from his HS tape he could be a great leaper, but now that he's filling out and is 6'3'' 199 he can be a lot more physical. Excited to see him out there.

I think the guy I'm most looking forward to seeing is Zwinak. I think we'll have a little thunder and lightning going on with him and Redd.

  • I wonder if Hull would do good in a Spur type position. The Spur is a SS/LB hybrid role that they use at South Carolina and Butler was the one who coached the position while he was there.

  • I'll admit that I wasn't high on Robinson. His vertical was very impressive and he caught the ball well, but he had a choppy stride and simply wasn't that fast. Speed was enough of an issue that his high school coach actually specifically mentioned that he had to get faster (and enough of an issue that Minnesota and Toledo were his next best offers). That fact that he's apparently running by people on deep routes and burning cornerbacks is pretty incredible. He grew late and I guess he just needed time to adjust. He didn't look overly fast last year, but he certainly looked faster, and much smoother. Sounds like he's really developing at a pretty rapid rate, and that would be key given the loss of Moye and Drake moving to corner.

Perhaps his development is why there have been whispers of moving Shawney Kersey to S... even if it is nothing more than Spring experimentation?
IIRC, isn't Robinson still only 17 years old and won't turn 18 'til August?
So as a Senior in HS he was basically as old as most sophomores in high school. Sounds like he continued to grow and develop physically since he's been here and still shouldn't be done just developing naturally. I agree it's awesome to hear he is getting open deep and demonstrating speed. You figure too that the vert is a sign of explosiveness, so perhaps this is just now his long speed catching up with that natural explosiveness as he continues to grow.
A guy like Robinson panning out could do wonders for this offense and be very important once Justin Brown leaves.

  • Pretty surprising that Hull's still @ 213lbs. I was thinking the same... We're super-thin @ Safety. Can he turn and run w/ anyone? He'd be a studly in the box SS.

And Robinson doesn't surprise me. I watched his high school basketball highlights - he's an unbelievable athlete. Was just a question of if / when he would start to put it together on the field and if he would keep growing. All positive signs it appears here.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

2013 really wants to say the following- "I liked Robinson when almost no one else did. I'm right, you all were wrong!!"

There, I said it for him. If only everyone had known he would learn how to run after his junior year of high school.

    Haha

Just liked his potential. Let's see what Hixon can do with him now.

IIRC. Didn't Seltz like him as well.

I don't think he's quite that young. I could be wrong, but I believe there was some confusion about his age during his recruitment. He was young, but not ridiculously young. Vert is certainly a strong sign of explosiveness, but it doesn't necessarily translate directly to straight line speed all the time. If Robinson is legitimately getting open deep then that would be a rather dramatic improvement from where he was at the time he committed, where speed was the primary reason he wasn't recruited by many D1 programs.

  • good article, was surprised about the hull and Robinson mentioned, all the others I have heard mentioned this spring. Will be interesting to see what Zettel weighs in right before fall camp.
