4.19 40-Yard Dash..... Are you kidding me?

  • Sorry to post a link from Bleacher Report. I know most of your guys hate that site, even i do, but this just caught my eyes.

    A kid from University of Northern Iowa, just ran a 4.19 40-yard dash at the University of Minnesota's pro day... Is this even possible? huh

    Chris Johnson had the previous fastest time ever with a 4.24 sec dash.

    Chris Johnson has the fastest time at the combine. This was not at the combine and there are many variables that go into 40 times. Fast track, slow track, wind, what kind of timing device. Depending on what track he ran on sometimes personnel men add a tenth or more.

    I think it's pretty incredible, I doubt it's accurate though due to it being hand timed.

    I'd like to see him run in electronically.

    I think the NFL should start bringing in some guys outside of the normal combine to run the 40 or do certain drills. It would just open up the number of players and add some more excitement to an already fun combine.

    If winning was easy even losers would do it.

    Didnt deion sanders do 4.18 or something absurd? Maybe was a 4.2...still absurd

    Your right about all the variables that go into it, I don't think anyone can argue that they have the fastest time ever. Using Chris Johnson as an example, he ran his record time after the RCA dome installed Fieldturf, which is generally considered a faster surface than astroturf (the previous material used at the RCA dome).

    Actually, I found an article about a guy Rondel Melendz (WR from a kentucky directional school) that ran a 4.24 in 1999 (the first year the NFL used electric timing) and he did it on the Astroturf.

    To answer the OP question, JMO, in this day and age (on fieldturf) Melendz could have ran a close to 4.20 time. Add in the professional training that guys receive and I think he would do it. So if he could, I could see someone else doing it.

  • All this talk of being legit or what to add when reading forty times. My evals are easier, a complicated system sure..ya know, fast enough or not. :)

    Yes, hand timed though ... he is often thought to be the fastest and then when ESPN does a 30 for 30 on Bo Jackson we hear that he is the fastest, etc.

  • Sinkfield ran a 10.86 in high school. Typically, the elite sprinters show more potential by their high school senior year. Consider the high school 100m record of 10.08 or Rocket Ismail running a 10.2 100m (hand-timed at high school districts to my recollection) and a 6.07 55m/60yd at ND. If Sinkfield is an 'all-timer', his speed curve should have displayed a better time as he exited high school.

    The margin of error on hand-timing -- along with Sinkfield's established times and the typical progression -- make the elite comparisons not believable. Surely, some athletes are better in the 10m/20m splits that lead to a better 40m, but we must compare apples to apples. Time Sinkfield on a good track with an electronic system.

    Relax, i totally got your point, and i agree.

    But im still wondering. I know hand held times are off... but by how much (considering the timer was competent)? As in, he was hand held timed at 4.19s, so im guessing if he was electronically timed (on the same ground), it would have been a little slower, maybe in the high 4.2's? Thats still pretty damn fast. And i agree with Lang06, they should allow them to the combine, will def'ly be alot of fun to watch them compete against the others.

  • The article I read about this said that only the kids agent clocked him at a 4.19. None of the scouts there had him below a 4.3. If I remember correctly I believe the Vikings scout said he ran in the high 4.3s

    Not sure if they're still going on but pretty sure I read they culminate in another combine of the top guys from the regional combines. Maybe they'll invite him to that. Pretty sure that terrible woman kicker won't be getting an invite to that

    I think it depends on the location/quality of the surface. I know that Lucas Oil Stadium is renowned for the quality of their Fieldturf.

    This is supported with the combine data, the evidence from the combine shows that since 2005 there have been significantly more players running sub 4.30 then the 1999 to 2005 period. Other variables could be issues, but I have read most discussing the shift to fieldturf as being the biggest reason.

    That was a joke, I read she asked other kickers how to approach the kick/didn't even know how to put the ball on the tee. She also didn't warmup at all except for pushup and crunches.
