2014 Hoops Recruiting Updates...

  • There's also a fine line between yanking a kid's scholarship and Pat sitting down with the young man to tell him it's not working out here and to think about finding a better fit for basketball if the kid wants to see playing time. It's the humane way of telling him he needs to move on and puts it on the player to decide if he 1) wants to stay at PSU and be a practice only player, or 2) move on.

I agree with you. Other than Pat Ackerman, though, who would you suggest having that discussion with? (serious question not sarcasm)

IMO, we need to keep Graham because we will need his experience next year.

Unless Chambers sees something from Graham in practice that we don't see in the games--very possible--I don't see how he helps us next year for anything more than depth. I'd rather go small.

Agree.....Graham has shown nothing this year....just does not have the skill level to play down low in the Big Ten.

If Pat Ackerman leaves I don't think this is an issue for next year?

When does Graham graduate? Could he be a senior with junior eligibility? Here's why I'm asking. He could come back next year but not the following... opening up another 2014 spot but adding depth next year.

I was terribly disappointed with Graham this year. He showed signs of development last year and I thought he was turning the corner. Then he came out this year and seems to have regressed.... I mean he literally looks lost out there like he's a true freshman. When he's in position, he's actually a decent post defender though. The other thing with Graham is that he'll be a 4th year player next year and academic senior. I'm on the fence with these "carefrontations" to begin with, but I wouldn't like to see a kid ready to graduate next year asked to consider moving on or giving up his scholarship.

The problem I see is that if both Graham and Ackerman "move on" who's left that can defend the post? Travis and Taylor are both small forwards that seem to better suited on the wing. Jack is currently an inexperienced bean pole (no offense to jack) who showed a little promise on the offensive side but struggled defensively. The 6'9" walkon kid isn't terrible, but I don't think he's the answer either.

It seems clear that any success PSU has next year is going to be the result of great guard play so we don't need anything close to a game changer in the post. What we do need though is someone that understands positioning, can play 1v1 post defense, run the floor, and not be a turnover machine on offense. Graham has done that in the past so we at least know he can play at the minimum level required. The scary thing is, he's the only one I can say that about who is returning. Even if Moore comes in and has a freshman all-bigten season like Cornley did, we are going to need a a couple more guys in the post IMO. I think Graham, Moore, and Jack might be it.

No one talks about Akosa as a potential to move on... I know he's a chambers recruit and they go back to when he was recruiting him to BU, but he's struggled to find any time despite montminy and Colella seeing more time than him. No offense to those guys, especially colella who certainly earned his ship, but with all the guards next year (Tim, Newbill, Johnson, Marshall, Thorpe, Woodward, Banks.....) I'm not sure where he fits in.

Yea, I guess yanking a kid's scholarship would be the "least" likely scenario but I really wasn't considering it a possibility. So of the other thee, Marshall not coming back for his 5th year is the least likely of the plausible scenarios.

Frazier not coming back tops Marshall not coming back in the least likely category.
