2014 Hoops Recruiting Updates...

  • As the high school season winds down and AAU starts to ramp up, going to start putting updates on 2014 players in this thread.

I attached a matrix to show the scholarship situation going forward. Penn State is recruiting like there will be another player added in the 2014 class, for what it's worth.

  • 2014 PF Tory Miller tweeted earlier a top 4 in no order consisting of Colorado State, Marquette, Penn State and Nebraska. We caught up with him about a month ago.

    Tory Miller adding major offers

Penn State is one of several major programs on the trail of New Hampshire 2014 big man Tory Miller.

Colorado state? Is that a real school?

I'm not sure if you're kidding or not. They're from the MWC and made the NCAA tournament last season with Tim Miles at the helm, he parlayed that success into the Nebraska head coaching position.

  • Miller seems like the kinda of player PSU is missing down low, no?

Somewhat kidding. I remember hearing that miles was hired from there but they seem out of place in the final 4 to me

  • I'm guessing Ackerman and/or Graham are gone after this year... just my sense.

Also, Andrew, heard any rumblings about Sasa and the staff changing their minds about his graduating and foregoing this final year of eligibility?

And I'm sure right now somebody from Colorado State is reading that top four and asking themselves, "Penn State has a basketball team?"

While Sasa has def been our best "big" this year we still need scholarships to open up in the worst way. I wish we could keep him for 1 more year and lose someone else but at this point in time every ship is HUGE for Pat and he needs that one

I couldn't figure out if he was serious or not either.

So....by going by that matrix it looks as though one player is going to have to either leave the team or lose their schollie and walk on just to get them to even for the 2013-2014 year.

The four 2013 recruits are all signed, so they're locked in. Basically, either Jermaine isn't going to come back for his 5th year, a player will leave the team while continuing their education at Penn State, or someone will transfer out altogether. Remember, last year three players left the team (Alexis, Lewis and Glover).

Right, there's usually attrition every year. My guess for normal attrition this year will be Ackerman and/or Graham. And by "normal attrition" I mean that the player and the coach will come to a mutual agreement that moving on would be in everyone's best interest.

This is the least likely scenario, IMO, and I'm not sure it's even an option--unless he gets in trouble off the court or academically between now and next October. It's just not plausible from what I know.... am I missing something?

No you're not, just stating the possibilities when you look at the matrix.

My guess is Ackerman will make the decision not to come back which will be mutual of course.

That would make us even for the next two years. Of course someone else could leave.

Colorado State has more players in the NBA right now than Penn State does in Center Jason Smith (1st round pick in 2007 draft). Tim Miles really turned that program around and into a perennial contender after a debacle in his first season. The year Smith was on their roster, they had 3 7 footers on the roster, and all I could think to myself was, why can't we have even one 7 footer on the roster. My best friend went to CSU and he always gave me a hard time for them having more 7 footers than us.

Plus, they are or at least were ranked in the top 25 this year with some good wins against quality opponents.

  • 2014 PG Tre Campbell playing in the WCAC Championship game tomorrow night. We've got him at No. 141 overall, and Penn State has been consistently recruiting him since he was offered back in August.

He's got a chance to reel in some nice offers this summer if he continues this high level of play that has led SJC to the WCAC title game.

What you are missing is that PSU has a history of not yanking kids scholarships. There are really four possible options:

    1. Somebody unexpected transfers or leaves school
    2. Chambers and a player mutually agree to part ways.
    3. Chanbers yanks a kid's scholarship
    4. A fifth year senior is asked to not come back.

While option 3 might seem like the obvious answer, Penn State has a history of not yanking kids' scholarships. If Chambers wanted to pull a ship from a kid and the kid wanted to fight it, there's a very good chance that the kid would get his ship back once his appeal was heard by the faculty senate. That leaves option 4 as quite possibly the only viable option should 1 or 2 not happen. With Sasa already saying he's not coming back, that would mean that either Marshall or Frazier's ship wouldn't be renewed (two guesses as to which one would get the short straw).

  • 2014 commit Isaiah Washington and 2014 target Shep Garner are both playing in the first round of PIAA playoffs this weekend.

Washington and his Williamsport squad play Liberty on Saturday at 7:00PM in Montoursville Area HS. If they win they'll face powerhouse Chester in the second round.

Garner and Roman Catholic will be playing Norristown Area on Saturday at 5:00PM at La Salle College HS in Wyndmoor.

Both teams received #1 seeds for their district and are favored to go on to the second round.

For anyone in the area interested in seeing some post-season hoops, State College HS will be playing North Allegheny on Saturday at 7:00PM in Altoona.

Yea, I guess yanking a kid's scholarship would be the "least" likely scenario but I really wasn't considering it a possibility. So of the other thee, Marshall not coming back for his 5th year is the least likely of the plausible scenarios.
